Lol correlation and causation cannot be separate here easily. I bet the guy that’s willing to sell out 10k on nice clothes is also willing to work a few more hours each week. Just saying.

This guy doesn’t get it. People who subscribe to HBO at $15 a month pay the premium to get 4-8 hours of premium content. They do it because they have a ton on disposable income but not a lot of free time. Their time is valuable and they don’t have the luxury of wasting it on shit content. Hours of shit content a day, leave that for cable.

I wounder if anything will come of this, it seems like the unions are actually working against the teachers and not communicating their demands. The teachers go out and ask for basic shit like healthcare and class supplies and somehow that becomes a demand for a 20% raise which is a lot less popular. The unions at the local level might work Ok but at the state level they really suck and it’s unclear if they are working for or against teachers

Also raw tuna. Eat lots before they are extinct and/or banned

snoodog  ·  2390 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Catalan referendum: Catalonia has 'won right to statehood'

I think this is the biggest news of the weekend. 41% of the population voted for independence, not counting the votes that were destroyed by the Spanish government. There is no way this won't pass the second time around especially after all the videos of police beating people trying to vote. Catalonia will vote to leave the same way Britain voted for brexit or US voted to Trump itself. The masses are angry and they are willing to cut off their own noses to spite their face.

Yet somehow in the US markets are at an all time high and European junk bonds have a yield lower than us treasuries. It kind of reminds me of the novels I read where people were describing life right before the Great Depression

Ive been buying beans from here: http://swroasting.com/. They run me around $20 a lb after shipping but always arrive 2-3 days after roasting and are excellent.

It gets a bit expensive but its hard to get anything nearly as good as the home made stuff. Now if only I could figure out how to not get channeling in my espresso... I swear I've tried everything and I've mostly given up. No mater what I do the bottomless portafiler always has at least a spray or 2. cgod any advice?

Using a Oscar Espresso machine and Mazzer grinder. Only thing I can think of is that the Oscar doesn't have a pressure relief valve to stabilize the pressure at 9 psi so that might be contributing to the channeling.

Some people are just terrible engineers they go through all the copy and paste motions and can enter data but cant interpret it or understand where the output is or isnt applicable. Those people either become manager or get relegated to roles where they cant do much damage. I figure if 4 years of schooling hasnt drilled in the idea that just punching numbers into a tool is a bad idea then I'm not going to make any progress in the next two months. It always surprises me how many terrible engineers there are out there. I always felt that most of the people in my engineering classes were really sharp but then I meet all these engineers that dont even understand basic concepts like tolerances and it just makes me sad.

snoodog  ·  2485 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Cultural Appropriation Is, In Fact, Indefensible

I guess I'll play devils advocate and ask why it's not ok for a white woman to dress as a geisha? Or for that matter a black man? If gender can be fliuid why can't race or culture? Imo people get upset way too easily and want to control what others can and cannot do. If someone wants to rave in faux native head dress I say go for i if that enhances their trip.

Why can't an Asian guy wear full cowboy gear? Or colonial clothes or even a uniform from the civil war? IMO Nobody owns a cultural copyright on those even if they think they do. We're just too afraid that someone might get offended and that we get offended in anticipation that someone else might.

As for Mongolians and sushi its kind of a weird example, if someone cooks a lot they may very well know how to make it. If they don't they probably don't know, regardless of ethnicity. We live in such a global society it's silly to limit oneself to only food or dress from your own little ethnic sub group.

Idk where you live but in Seattle every grocery store has the big whole bean dispensers, if you dont have a grinder you can pre-grind at the store. Also Trader Joes coffee used the be pretty decent but I think quality has gone downhill.

Was that tower the UK equivalent of the "Projects"? Seemed like it was some sort government sponsored housing where a bunch of the money was siphoned off / stolen. Similar things happen in the US but luckily they dont usually end this tragically.

snoodog  ·  2505 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Shake it up. Offer up one somewhat unpopular opinion that you hold.

I think that there is an excellent point here that "Incentives matter".

Welfare is currently designed such that married couples or even co-habitating couples are punished and given less resources to succeed. Its unclear if that was an intentional attack on the black family unit or just an unfortunate consequence but the destruction of the poor black family is one of the main consequences of that policy. This could be easily fixed by removing the marriage penalty from all government programs and actually proving a small incentive for two people to stay toughener and raise a child.

Just like incentives matter in welfare the do so in schools as well.

There is no Incentive for good teachers to teach at poor schools, and no incentive for good students to go to said poor schools so anyone that can just gets out and goes somewhere better. Because of this, schools naturally segregate. If no effort is taken to integrate them over time schools will segregate into rich schools and poor schools which also tends to mean white/asian schools vs black/Hispanic schools due to how wealth is distributed demographicaly in the US. Its a self reinforcing loop where if a school is on an upward or downward trend it will continue on that trend until it either levels off at the top or sinks to the bottom.

They taste better probably because they are slightly more perishable and therefore had to be sourced closer. The same strawberry could be grown using conventional methods to taste as good or better. I think it's just supper hard to differentiate good tasting berries from bland ones when the good tasting ones look the same or uglier and thus get the price premium.

It's strawberry season BTW go out and pick some local ones. The farm fresh ones will blow you mind. No need for organic

Lol boy do i have a large laundry list, But I'll throw out a few.

In western countries women have significantly more social privilege than men, especially if you throw out the outliers.

"organic" food is significantly more dangerous and harmful than regular fruits and vegetables.

Cats are an invasive species and should be managed as such.

Those words have a lot of baggage associated to them that's lost on a 16 year old. When you are young it's just a bad word, you don't really think about it in context of cultural sensitivity or the historical oppression. Only advice I would have is to keep it off the internet permanent record. Things on the internet never go away no matter how long ago or how different of a person you are.

Ad networks are a main malware payload route it seems. All sorts of legitimate sites will suddenly pop up into App Store and try to run other malicious code. It's really difficult to prevent and makes using an Adblock service almost mandatory. People who sell ads don't really seem to care and a bad ad can run for weeks before it gets pulled

snoodog  ·  2549 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: A Question of Neighborhoods and Waverunners

Im not super sure what you are asking but here is my perspective on home ownership:

If you are buying into a house realize that #1 is not really an investment and you will probably end up paying significantly more than your monthly payment to get it the way you like. Between gardening, repairs and upgrades its easy to get carried away.

Real estate is regional. Whats happening in Seattle and LA isnt the same as whats happening in other places, you got to evaluate your local market.

First understand where you are locally relative to historic norms, have house prices in your area skyrocked or stayed level. That will help you understand what your risk is. If you are up 100% over the last 5 years your risk is high, if the market hasn’t moved more than 10-15% its probably lower risk.

Understand your local government and zoning plan. Is your city running a huge deficit? Are they burning money like no tomorrow on services of dubious value(Seattle)? Are they planning to build any large structures or change zoning near you? Most cities have 5-25 year plans and they are available online or from city hall. How is the tax policy? Is it so bad that everyone is moving one city over to avoid it?

Understand your own risks: How is your job? What happens if you lost it? Can you rent the house if you move? You take a 8-10% hit every time you move can you afford that? Do you live in a recourse or non recourse state (this has huge implications on your risk profile)?

One of the things that the guys at "Strong Towns" recommend is buying into a town/area that has existed before WW2. City planning was a lot better back then and sprawl wasn’t a huge problem. Areas of that era are significantly more walk able, and there is less infrastructure cost per person due to smart planning, unfortunately its hard to find areas like that with good schools so that might not be an option for you.

If you are actually crazy enough to buy into a house as an investment then you might as well just go all in. Basically a 10% market move against you will wipe you out even at 20% down payment so make sure you live in an non-recourse state and put in as little money as possible for down payment buy into a hot market and pray. A hot market will crash eventually so you just gotta be quick to sell when things turn and gain at least 10% to break even, but you could potentially gain huge amounts on your 3% investment.

We live in a Non HOA area there are good things and bad things with that. The good thing is that I can keep bees, chickens, do maintenance on my car, skip a week mowing my lawn, paint my house a color I like and not pay any monthly fees. The downside is that I have a neighbor down the block that never mows her lawn and parks her Audi on the lawn. I have another neighbor that has a near abandoned van parked in the driveway stuffed with garbage, and our next door neighbor had a blackberry bush the size of a small shed growing right next to our fence.

In my view the freedom to not pay fees and be left alone is worth it. The really egregious things the city will fine you for and if I really wanted to piss off my neighbors I could report them to the city for illegally parking on the lawn/abandoned vehicles.

None of those things really make the neighborhood feel unsafe though. The unsafe feeling that we do get is from any abandoned/empty houses and any areas where loitering is happening. There is a house a mile or so from us that is vacant awaiting demolition and crack heads end up squatting there. That feels unsafe and any areas where people loiter like the 7-11 where hobos hang out or the Fed-Myers near subsidized housing. Walk the neighborhood at night/dusk a few times and you will get a get a good idea of how safe or not it is.
