It does. The fact that more women than men survive suicide attempts is down to the fact that more men use guns in their suicide attempts (whereas women more often use drugs/poison, which are easier to survive).

There's nothing I can say to make someone change their point of view. It has to come from that person. All I can say is that he's wrong. The things he thinks aren't true. If you want to take that wall down, you have to examine each brick. Why did you put that brick there? Because of an experience or moment - you have to look back on it and either accept it and move on, or totally change your point of view on the experience. It's not my wall, so I can't tell you what the bricks are made of. You have to do that yourself, with a lot of introspection. The problem with someone who's depressed is, that you can't think clearly or logically about a moment, and come to a different conclusion. You are already in the depths of an emotional state where you can't change your mind without help (help from a professional therapist or help from an anti-depressant).
You can't logic and reason your way out of this kind of depression. One conversation is not enough to convince someone that the huge wall they have built around themselves needs to come down. They might not even realize they've been building that wall.

To add to the university/corporation handshake, universities are also part of the military-industrial complex (at least, research universities are) since they are a hub for scientific/tech research (using government grants), the results of which can then be used by the military/government/biotech companies, so on and so forth.
Critical thinking skills. Being able to synthesize information. Maybe I could have learned it some other way, but for me, university was where that stuff really "clicked". It's also a nice little ease-in to the real world from living with your parents - like a test run for life. Learning how to be on your own but with responsible adults not too far off, a sort of built-in safety net. I'm tired so I apologize if I'm not being super clear/expressing myself well.

Ok, but that's not really what this thread is. I'm asking about personal memories that happen to be tied to music. It's not about whether we all remember the summer of 2003. Some people are just sharing the music without anecdotes, which is also fine.
That's really amazing. I'm always interested in the types of communities that happen in "lawless" or otherwise unregulated places. It seems to me like when people don't feel like there's someone else in charge or looking out for their well-being (or actively working against them), they tend to rely on each other more and protect each other more. Of course it can also lead to gangs and gang violence. Fascinating anyway!

Aha, I understand you now. Yes, there are plenty of rural loci for mass shootings. My suggestion was just an idea to explain any possible discrepancy that doesn't ignore the "aggrieved entitlement" phenomenon proposed in the article. There is also plenty of data that shows aggression is directly linked to testosterone levels, but that's not directly related to any of the data in the article and I likely only thought of it due to my own cognitive bias and past forays into (only the most basic) criminal psychology.

For the rural thing, it might be that rural locations aren't as affected by "progressive" social issues like feminism and such, where male privilege is a little safer from such movements. Maybe not, just thinking out loud.

This isn't space/time, but it is existence I suppose - I used to think that everything we do was on a fixed track, a form of predestination in which we were always going to make the same choices at any given point. I have since further refined that idea to come as a result of brain chemistry - that it is impossible for us to "will" ourselves to do anything that we weren't already going to do, because all our actions are based on an unpredictable concoction of electrical impulses and hormones pumping through our system. So we can't know ahead of time what we're going to do at any given point, because it depends on those signals and impulses and chemicals, and consciousness is only an awareness of the result, not a motivator of action. This also a way of saying I don't believe in a mind/body duality, that your brain and your mind are one, so what seems like an instruction your mind is giving to your brain is just one impulse from one part of the brain to another. This is also why I don't think you could be a disembodied brain in a jar, because all of the inputs you're receiving are from chemical reactions in your body, and if you didn't have a body, you would have to be receiving those inputs some other way, and that's just some other sort of "body" (i.e. what's the difference between a sack of carbon and a computer if they're sending the same chemical signals?).
