There's probably a technical reason for it. My guess would be each character adds more bulk to the user database.

It's odd that such an advanced military needs to bomb houses to get at tunnels.

I'm good friends with several Serious Southern Baptists, and we have almost nothing in common aside from being major geeks. We have good discussions about pop culture and politics, and we stay respectful all the way through. Differences in beliefs shouldn't keep two people from being friends and having good discussions.

mkr  ·  3567 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: "You are muted here. Have you tried apologizing?"

Yep. It comes with the presumption that an apology is necessary. It probably is, but people who need to account for their errors rarely see that they do before talking it out.

mkr  ·  3567 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: "You are muted here. Have you tried apologizing?"

I was wrong about mute. I just used it on someone who's awful at posting and actively degraded my Hubski experience.

This is a great idea, though the language probably needs something more. It seems like most people mute users who are oblivious and bullheaded.

I've seen some conflict over the number. All of them are advocates (I think), but not necessarily researchers.

This is both the most thorough and concise piece I've read on the history of the conflict.

mkr  ·  3567 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Who(m) have you muted?

I wiped my mute list the moment I realized its scope. I'd be okay with it if my showmute idea is implemented, but with reservations.

This is Digg. Digg is fine. The world only needs one Digg.

The first one was a misunderstanding that we quickly resolved. The second was a hilarious parody thread where we all had fun. The third is this one where the rest of us are having a nice chat about possible modifications to the feature.

mkr  ·  3568 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: "you are muted here"

I made a post about the scope of the feature, not the specific mute. Probably wasn't clear about that.

mkr  ·  3568 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: "you are muted here"

I understand completely. I went and cleared out my mute list once I realized how it worked.

| Edit, also I'm not sure what you mean when you say "no one will see it." '

My understanding is it also keeps other people from seeing it, not just the person who muted. Uncle Ben would not approve.

| You got bent about it.

I'm trying to figure out which part of my post gave this impression. Can you point it out? I'll use that to improve future posts.

mkr  ·  3568 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: "you are muted here"

Reddit is better if you have the right tools and options enabled. I have RES with child comments hidden by default. It turns out the top level stuff is almost universally good, even in big default sub threads. It's down in the trenches where the bad stuff happens.

mkr  ·  3568 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: "you are muted here"

How about a showmute feature similar to HN's showdead? A full wheel of votes could override the mute for that post and reset it to 0.

mkr  ·  3568 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How many of you are ex redditors?

The original is best for me. Thanks.

mkr  ·  3568 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How many of you are ex redditors?

Can you share the module? I think that would improve my Reddit experience quite a bit.

As with all tragedies, be skeptical of early reports. Especially those that identify a cause.

I'll give it some thought.

All the women I know seem quite happy about Thor's temporary replacement. No mentions of pandering.

Still hot.

Also badass, as xenophon already mentioned.

My standard is equal capacity to consent. Two adults getting drunk and marrying in Vegas are being dumb and shortsighted, but they're operating with a similar capacity for and depth of judgement.

mkr  ·  3568 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 5 Year Olds Can Learn Calculus

I hated math until I realized I could actually use it in the real world, long after grade school. After finishing the ordeal of college algebra, which I loaded at the end of the degree knowing I'd struggle, I started looking for ways to use it.

I tried to use systems of equations to identify an opponent's strength in a web game (Astro Empires). This was with a post in the forums, so people could come and discuss it. It was actually a little thrilling to have people who didn't know about systems say I was doing the math wrong, then see people who routinely did much more complicated math commend me for my effort (while explaining why it was futile).

I can never remember "correct" formulas between uses, but now I always think in terms of algebra when I need to solve a problem. I can come up with a functional formula on the spot.

You're a loose cannon, Roller Coaster Cop.

mkr  ·  3569 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Proudly Muted! But I still can't shut up about feminism.

| Imma tell you straight, if someone said that to me in a discussion I'd be ticked off, and your comment above comes with absolutely no context or justification behind it. Why would you think your viewpoint was any more considered? Literally, out of left field, a dismissal with no justification, which is why it didn't work as a dismissal.

You're absolutely right. I threw the first ill tone. I should be better than this.

Rock Perry's comments also fall into that old trap of assuming it's all about sex.

mkr  ·  3570 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Proudly Muted! But I still can't shut up about feminism.

MRAs are fine, but a lot of them latch on to shoddier theories than the worst feminist. Feminists have their TERFs and Redstockings. MRAs have their AVFMs and...probably something else that's not coming to me right now.

The tendency to paper over the goofballs among them was the original reason I couldn't identify with either, long before I looked deeper and realized how far the movements were from something I could support. The only positive thing I can say about MRAs in general is that I can go into an MRA space and be critical without being attacked or banned. Currently banned from /r/feminism, /r/askfeminists, and even /r/wherearethefeminists after calling out some misandry.

mkr  ·  3570 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Proudly Muted! But I still can't shut up about feminism.

All that said in the other thread, I might do a post going into more detail, but I'm a bit exhausted on the subject right now. A lot of my research and writing energy is focused on the more personal issue of gay rights and the upcoming elections. Maybe I'll have more ability to focus on other things once the SCOTUS nails (a significant part of) state-level bigotry next year.

mkr  ·  3570 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Proudly Muted! But I still can't shut up about feminism.   ·

| Hilarious. People wonder why feminists get so upset, it's not like women are disenfranchised or anything.

Because my misunderstanding a feature is oppressing you. It's a good thing MRAs haven't invaded hubski yet. They'd have a field day with that one.
