Trump. Because I think he's pandering to and manipulating people.

I think Cruz believes more of what he says than Trump. And to me that's more dangerous

The ring theory that Mr_Pink shared and this video helped me appreciate the prequels more and put a finger on what Lucas was going for.

Unfortunately, he just dropped the ball.

In plot, in directing, in dialogue, in emotion, etc, etc, etc, they just don't compare to the originals. And it's a shame. Because the overall idea of the prequels had the potential for great storytelling. It just failed in the execution.

This movie highlighted one of the main problems with the overall trilogy: Anakin's fall is poorly developed.

The films basically tell us that Anakin turned to the dark side because he couldn't handle losing people he cared about. This is aspect is actually explored a bit with the massacre on Tatooine and the scenes with the Emperor. He joins the Sith specifically to save Padme according to Episode III.

But he pledges allegiance to the Emperor without ever even knowing the the Emperor can actually save Padme. This makes Anakin come off as a bit of fool, which isn't really how anyone wanted to feel about Darth Vader.

The film also tries to tell us that he has issues with the Jedi and thinks they are "evil."

This is never really explored at all. He basically goes from turning the Emperor in to thinking the Jedi are evil, being completely subservient to the Emperor, and being willing to kill "younglings" in twenty minutes. The movie tries to tell us that the Jedi Code is problematic, but besides the "people can't love" rule that randomly showed up, we're never shown any moments when the Jedi Code becomes too dogmatic.

The only times Anakin runs into conflict with other Jedi is basically when they won't let him do whatever he wants. It make Darth Vader come off as a spoiled brat, which is not what anyone wanted either,

Watching the prequels now made me feel like the movies should have begun with the Clone Wars and a young adult Anakin. The conflict with the Jedi could have been more heavily explored, his friendship with Kenobi could have been more explored, his rise in the order could have been more explored, and his subsequent fall would have had more emotional weight to it.

I could never go and Lucas such a crucial scene in the saga.

It's an essential part of Vader's character. :D

EDIT: Though I guess Lucasing is adding more, not deleting. No matter. These films will be watched according to Lucas' original vision!

Cooper is on point today. I think this has been the best performance by a moderator I've seen, and we're only twenty minutes in.

lelibertaire  ·  3184 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What did you think of the debate today?

I thought Christie and Paul's back and forth on NSA surveillance was real interesting.

Unfortunately, I thought Christie got the best of Paul, who should have done much better. These debates are never really "debates," but it still would have been better for an opponent of the NSA programs to make the case to a live national audience.

I mean, Paul should have seen this topic coming, and he should have had a much better answer for any confrontation with a supporter of the NSA programs.

It seems pretty simple.

Attack the "conservative" candidate for playing lip service to the idea of "small government" while supporting such programs. Then use the rhetorical punch of calling the guy "Big Brother," which even those who haven't read 1984 understand.

Instead, Christie got to shout emotional platitudes while Paul struggled to communicate the problems with bulk surveillance.

For the most part I would imagine there are a lot of entitled people working to secure their own interests in different domains, that have the means to do so, and the collection of those efforts expresses itself as massive inequality.

I think you hit the nail on the head. It feels like it's an eventuality in a class-based society. The upper classes will act in their own interests, they will have more access to power centers and other powerful people thanks to their wealth and position, and they will thus have more power and influence in shaping society for their benefit, breeding inherent inequality.

The concept of meritocracy fosters the notion that those with success have earned it, but society is more complex than that. Hierarchical norms like class allow corruption and nepotism to breed so the most able are not necessarily the most successful. And of course, inequality causes disparities in opportunity and resources available to those who are less well-off.

Addressing this, to me, requires educating the middle and lower classes as well as urging the privileged to shrug off the elitism that makes them believe they "deserve" to have their material desires met more than others because they are "better."

Eh, I think you're the one cherrypicking.

That exceptions exist doesn't counter the argument that females tend to be highly sexualized in many video games. No one is ever painting ALL of gaming when they criticize trends and popular tropes. I believe this video also looked at poses as well.

Even then, some of your examples are problematic.

Peach might not be very sexualized, but she's a notorious damsel. Isn't Samus stripped if you beat the game in certain conditions? Tifa is notorious for being a pair of boobs with limbs attached. Yuna's cover pose is covered in the video. And I would be more than 50% of females in the Arkham series have huge cleavage, just like Harley does in this picture.

One game I'm looking forward to is Cuphead. I'm not sure if it's coming to pc or not, but I hope it does. The animation looks incredible.

Other games I'm looking forward to are Fallout 4 and Metal Gear Solid V. Also, No Man's Sky, but I have no idea how far away that game is from release.

#ohmygodwhocares might have become my new favorite tag even if it's never used again.

Don't really care for all this Reddit drama. Especially since I (and everyone else except Reddit's admins and Taylor herself) am ignorant of the actual details.

Great for this site, though, if new users can be gained from Reddit's problems. As always, I hope the new users are quality.

lelibertaire  ·  3244 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Movie Club - Voting Thread #15

So I saw this voting thread and it caused me some trouble.

One,because sometimes people differentiate between independently produced/distributed films and the quirky genre that came to define that scene. I also didn't want to pick any indie movies that were produced or distributed by companies like Fox Searchlight since that felt like cheating haha. And I didn't want to pick a movie people have seen before cause where's the fun in that. Even more troublesome, it was hard for me to narrow down my selection.

So I'm gonna divide this into well known Indies and lesser known and maybe you all should reply which one you'd like.

Well known:

1. Donnie Darko

2. Requiem for a Dream

3. Trainspotting

4. Being John Malkovich

5. Little Miss Sunshine (yeah, this one is Fox but oh well haha)

6. Primer

7. Boyhood

8. Dazed and Confused

9. Run Lola Run

Lesser known:

1. Pi

2. Hunger

3. Funny Games (1997)

4. La Haine

5. Chungking Express

6. Beau Travail

7. Frances Ha

8. Me and You and Everyone We Know

9. Submarine

It's hard for me to pick a favorite there. Really, really hard. Three I haven't seen myself, but I do love Hunger, La Haine, Chungking Express, Primer, Donnie Darko, and Being John Malkovich.
