Welp since we've gotten no votes, I'm going to also nominate:

City Lights - One of the most revered Charlie Chaplin films. Haven't seen this. Have only seen The Kid and The Great Dictator. Always good to watch some Chaplin,

lelibertaire  ·  2982 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Movie Club - Voting Thread 26 - Silent Films

I'm going to nominate:

Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. A two hour silent film that follows a couple's struggle to find their love after a woman seduces the husband into considering abandoning the family. I've actually never watched it so that's me trying to pitch it from the synopsis. I've been meaning to watch this film for a while. It's consistently cited as one of the greatest movies of all time and one of the best of the silent era. Roger Ebert listed it was one of his great movies

Oh yes, there's clearly more going on. I was just getting some quick thoughts out.

There are pretty clear commentaries on capitalism, greed, a longing for simpler times, and of course the story is really a coming-of-age film as Chihiro experiences a lot of growth in the 2 hour runtime. And there's all those images and creatures coming straight out of Japanese folklore.

I found a 24 page PDF on the folklore in the film last night that I plan on getting around to eventually. Probably will offer even more insight into the film.

I still need to watch a lot of Miyazaki's filmography, most nostably Nausicca, Totoro, and Ponyo.

lelibertaire  ·  3003 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Movie Club - Voting Thread 25 - Animation

I'm going to nominate 2014's The Tale of Princess Kaguya.

After hearing all the praise for it, I saw it last year and it must be one of the best animated films I've ever watched. The animation is absolutely gorgeous, and in my opinion, in unquestionable should have won the Oscar last year.

lelibertaire  ·  3018 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Movie Club - Voting Thread 24 - Free Choice

That's what I hear. I've just never found myself ready to give it a go and I want to be sure I watch it in the right mindset.

Think it's about time.

I will say I liked it a lot more the second time, but I think I also liked it more than you the first time too so..

lelibertaire  ·  3049 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi - Discussion Thread

I agree with you pretty much 100% here.

In fact, I think the Emperor/Luke/Vader dynamic is one of most compelling dramatic conflicts in the series.

But those teddy bears take me out of it, and Jedi in many parts seems like it's the film where Lucas first really decided that he cared most about delighting children and advancing Star Wars merchandising.

Super hero fatigue has hit me strongly.

I think I realized it with Avengers 2.

This looks like it'll likely be as good as the others, but I doubt I'll see this one in theaters unless invited

Thanks! It's nice knowing people are appreciating the movie club and enjoying themselves.

Glad to hear you had a nice Thanksgiving and I hope you can join us at the theater one of these weeks

lelibertaire  ·  3070 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back - Discussion Thread

Tarkin really is interesting with his relationship to Vader, especially since Vader is given so much more importance in the following films. I'm sure the EU expanded on him, but I've never paid much attention to the EU.

And that is interesting about the signage. I've never even thought to look for that in the films.

lelibertaire  ·  3075 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Star Wars Movie Club - Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

Personally? It's my favorite by a lot.

It really expands the universe to me, especially in regard to the force. It introduces iconic characters like Boba Fett and Yoda. It has that great twist. It introduces the Emperor and we hear the imperial march. Also it's the first real captivating light saber battle.

But most of all, it's just a tighter production.

You can tell they had more money, and it helps the world feel real. Also you can tell Kershner is a more competent director. The camera work and shots feel of a higher quality than IV and the pacing is great.

The movie just feels like the most solid, professional work of the saga.

lelibertaire  ·  3077 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: La Haine - Discussion Thread

If I had to describe this movie with one word, it would be "stylized," and not in a bad way.

The camerawork is fantastic to me. The way it moves through a scene to highlight different actors, the times it runs in for a dramatized close shot, the other times it slowly moves forward to build tension, and the quiet moments, when it sits still, introspectively.

There are many great uses of the camera, including the riff on Taxi Driver's "You talking to me" scene. A double was actually used for this scene with Cassel standing on the other side of an empty frame to make it appear as though he's looking at a mirror without having to worry about the camera being reflected.

The choice to go black-and-white really gives the film aesthetic appeal as well, which the camerawork just adds to. And there's also some really great music throughout the film.

The acting was great, and the characters are well developed. One of my favorite aspects of this film is how real each character feels. These kids are largely rough, uneducated, and unsympathetic, but they feel like people I have met in my lifetime. They feel like products of their environment, and their resentments and struggles feel real. Hubert of course comes off as the most sympathetic character, which makes the ending that much more tragic.

And what an ending! It's one of my favorite endings of all time, and I love the way the film is bookended with the story of the man falling off the skyscraper ("So far so good.") and the slow close ups of Said's face. The story is also wonderfully foreshadowed by the skyscraper frame, as the characters find themselves in tenser and tenser situations as the story moves forward.

To bring it back to the topic, I think this film is really compelling look at the lives of troubled, impoverished youth. it let's people really see their relationship with their society, their families, and the police. I think key scenes that reflect this are the rooftop scene, the scene with Hubert and his family, the art gallery scene, and of course the ending.

I never feel like there's any finger pointing in La Haine. It just feels like Kassovitz was trying to build empathy and understanding in the audience, while simultaneously giving a critical, as-real-as-possible look into the characters' lives and attitudes.

lelibertaire  ·  3080 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Super Bunnyhop Review: Fallout 4

Uh. I could list a lot. And a lot of it has to do with the dialogue wheel.

For one, the dialogue wheel means that stat-specific responses are now gone. So scientists are telling me I'm too stupid to understand things in this game even though I have >= 10 Intelligence. In the others, an intelligence dialogue option would let you show off that you understand what's going on. My 10 intelligence character being talked down to isn't fun.

Most quests are fetch/kill quests unfortunately. There are a few different ones, but I wish there were more. Also, the "radiant" quests are annoying. You have to run away from a character to not get these infinite quests clogging up the quest log. Sometimes you can't avoid it at all.

The wheel means that sometimes you can't talk to a NPC about a specific quest because there's another quest that relates to them as well. As in, instead of adding a dialogue option to the tree for each specific quest, the game forces you to only progress in whichever quest it deems is most important. Problem is sometimes one quest will cancel out another (as in it forces you to maybe try start a quest that will make the other quest fail when you could have done both if you didn't start both at the same time).

There's also moments when there are no responses for what you'd want to say. One character accosts me for having order to kill another, and instead of having a response to say that I don't actually plan on killing the character, the best response is basically to say "orders are orders" as the others are telling the character to shut up or that I don't care about the other character's life.

I also find that enemy respawns disincentivize exploration. It's annoying when I have to go back to a place I cleared and looted long before, and instead of being rewarded for exploring earlier, i have to begrudgingly kill things all over again.

lelibertaire  ·  3085 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Movie Club - La Haine

Each round has a voting thread based on a specific topic (war, black and white film, fantasy epics, etc). People just come in and leave a comment about which film they're nominating and maybe some info on it, and the number of shares (the dots) determine which movie wins. If there's a tie, we have a run-off, with my vote being tie-breaker just in case there's another one.

Then I post a thread like this detailing which movie is picked, where to watch, and the time of the Hubski stream.

Then, we have a discussion thread on the selected film, and the user with the most shared comment discussing the film will be tapped by me to have a chance to pick the topic for the next round.

Then it all starts back up again. Every two weeks or so.

We're also running through the Star Wars films on the side each week until The Force Awakens releases.

If you click the #movieclub tag, you can pretty much see the history or it and how it works.

If you're interested, I can add you to the tag list so you get an email when the posts go up and for stream reminders.

lelibertaire  ·  3086 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Movie Club - Voting Thread #21 - Socially Conscious Films

We have another tie in the voting so let's do like last time.

I'll reply to this with separate comments for every eligible film. Share the comment of the film you'd most like to see. (Children of Men is ineligible as it's been watched in the club in the past).

Also, Star Wars post with info on stream and dates is coming up shortly.

Well that was fun. Hope this keeps chugging along.

Anyway, I'm letting the movie loop for the next few days, so if you haven't watched it yet, you can watch it at the theater still for a limited time. Trailers play before the film so don't get confused.

Enjoy

I really need to read it again. I read it 5 years ago and loved it, but I think I'd discover way more on a re-read. I completely forgot or missed this tidbit you brought up.

But first, I need to finish Blood Meridian.

I was 12 when this happened, and thought it was pretty ridiculous that the guy was so affected by getting too fire up instead of policy decisions or something

Pretty much taught me how petty modern politics can be.

That said, I can only think of Dave Chappelle when I see this. Byah!

Looks like the Netflix version is 124 minutes so that would be the original, correct?

lelibertaire  ·  3130 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Movie Club - Under New Management - Seeking Input

That's something I'm definitely looking into.

/r/TrueFilm has been one of my favorite subs on Reddit since I found it so I've been aware of the concept (though I never participated).

If I can get it set up, I'll let everyone know after a winner is picked in the first vote.

lelibertaire  ·  3130 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Movie Club - Under New Management - Seeking Input

I think I've got it figured out

lelibertaire  ·  3140 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: To Pimp a Butterfly is fucking garbage, here's why.

Shared for the unpopular opinion.

I like TPAB. But I'm a white dude (half Hispanic specifically). I love How Much A Dollar Cost and These Walls. And I like the album as a whole.

I wouldn't ever feign to say I know how it makes black people feel, though, or that it's a good thing for the black community or anything. I just like the music.

On the hand, I love Killer Mike, too, but he's more aligned to my politics. But Mike and Kendrick seem to respect each other just fine, even though Mike is more aggressive.

lelibertaire  ·  3183 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Super Bunnyhop: "Hundreds of Hours of Content"

Yeah, I'm subscribed so I keep up with him.

He does get a little too cynical at times, e.g. that E3 hype video.
