Staring down the barrel of a 3.5 project handoff meeting. I feel nothing in particular. I think nothing insightful. I am a receptacle for the edge-cases of small Midwestern businesses. I am, most importantly, a series of neural pathways that conveniently remember how to provision Azure resources

I've got two weeks of PTO starting on Monday, and my plans begin with staring at the ceiling until I feel something...and idk, probably kayaking or something?

Make a pair of insanely cumbersome goggles and tell people it's your "Tall Suit" when they ask!

Alternatively, the periscopes could be sideways and you can tell people you "Wanted to see through the eyes of a noble praying mantis"

My sister's been going through this a bit. She's studying for the MCAT right now, and her scores on practice exams dropped a bit after COVID-19 and haven't recovered as quickly as she wants. She also feels that persistent brain fog, and says it's harder for her to find the words she wants.

Short answer:

I think so?

Long answer:

I'd effectively be a lead dev on like 30 student projects simultaneously. It sounds stressful, but I also know they aren't doing anything technologically groundbreaking and it could be a really useful accelerator to pick up some skills I want to lay claim to in the future. I'd also get to deliver lectures and spend my free time picking up new technologies (essentially fucking around w/ side projects so that I can be a better resource for students). The role seems really flexible, and I'd get to use my natural soft-skill talents more than I do in my current in-the-trenches dev job. So...Probably? I think so!

Plus, I'd get to say I was the assistant director of an entire school on my resume. Kinda nifty.

Thanks guys. We're still in the salary negotiating phase, and I know they're desperate to hire before school kicks off in about a month. I'm going to see if I can leverage that for a bit more pay (my current salary isn't far outside of their range), but ultimately I'll plan on accepting the position. I'll keep y'all updated and let you know how it goes!

kingmudsy  ·  995 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: July 28, 2021

Keeping it abstract, but I was recently offered a job that I am SUPER, SUPER unqualified for. It's a pay cut, I'm likely too young for the role, it'll mean sticking to my home town for the next few years, and it'll probably be stressful for the first few months...

...BUT it would make me faculty at the university honor's program I graduated from two (ish) years ago, meaning I could go to grad school for free.

What's Hubski's gut feeling?

This house looks like its basement has a second secret basement with dirt floors and missing children.

This house looks like the original owner's mutant son, Cyrus, has been living here eating rats to survive for 25 years after murdering his family.

This house looks like where the girl from the grudge spent her semester abroad.

This house looks like it gained sentience after the groundskeeper had his still-beating heart interred into the foundation during a satanic ritual.

This house looks like a careful scientific analysis would reveal the drywall to be made of powdered human bones and the popcorn ceilings made of mysteriously preserved ground meat of dubious origins.

If someone gave me an unlimited budget and six months, I still don't think I could make a house look this murdery.

Knew nothing about these attacks, but the wikipedia page has really sucked me in. I'm halfway done reading it, but I'm thinking that this guy seems like every other moron who's ever decided that their lives would be improved by killing hundreds of other people publicly and in rapid succession.

Breivik spent six days in Prague in late August and early September 2010. Following his Internet inquiry, Breivik noted that "Prague is known for maybe being the most important transit site point for illicit drugs and weapons in Europe". Despite the fact that Prague has one of the lowest crime rates among European capitals, Breivik expressed reservations about his personal safety, writing that (before his trip there) he believed Prague to be a dangerous place with "many brutal and cynical criminals".

    ...

Contrary to his expectations, he was unable to get any firearms in the Czech Republic, commenting that it was the "first major setback in [his] operation". In the end, he concluded that Prague was "far from an ideal city to buy guns", nothing like "what the BBC reported", and that he had felt "safer in Prague than in Oslo"

What a miserable fucking idiot

Hi Hubski -

Realized that I went completely silent on here when the pandemic was at its spiciest. Rest assured, COVID-19 didn't get me! Almost everyone dealt with mental health difficulties during lockdown, myself included.

I missed everyone! I'm going to be lurking a bit, but I hope I have a chance to catch up with you guys. Hope everyone's been taking care!

I think the discourse we have here is fantastic, but the bar for entry is set past the point of willingness to inconvenience yourself for the good of society. It's really, really hard to have conversations like this with someone that doesn't even speak the same political language as you

kingmudsy  ·  1393 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Our grip on Phase 2 is slipping

The cult of American individualism has progressed to the point that we can't solve problems when the only solution is collective action sustained over time, even when the solution is as simple as a scrap of cloth over the face.

I don't know how to overcome that inertia. I don't know how to make grown men and women grow up.

The DMZ is still the DMZ - Parts of the border are more heavily fortified than others, and since the whole DMZ is about 2.5 miles wide it varies depending on how close you actually are to the international border. I don't have time to look into it as much as I want to, but apparently there's been some effort to remove landmines and other ordinance in the past decade

kingmudsy  ·  1403 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Masks, No Kissing and ‘a Little Kinky’: Dating and Sex in a Pandemic

I mean, for some people graduating high school is the milestone of their young lives. It's a big, big moment for a lot of people even if it's pretty boring!

And uhhh...Yeah, I mean the missed sex thing is a bit hyperbolic, but surely I'm not the only one that found it kind of relatable? COIVD-19 has absolutely made things a bit harder for a young single lad. The only girl I'm seeing right now has had COVID-19 and tested negative for it twice in a row about a month ago, and since she's a nurse she's pretty on top of her health - one of a few people I feel safe having sex with at the moment. I don't think people are going to go insane for a lack of sex, but a lot of humans do be fucking pretty regularly when they can.

Part of it is, I think, is what my friends and I have been calling "Quarantine Horny." With so much spare time and a lack of socializing, I think the hormones have just been accumulating and people are getting pretty friendly with one another. Who knows, though? I might just have weird friends

"ALRIGHT, listen up pheasants! We have this well-ventilated warehouse rented for TWO HOURS. I've set up drywall partitions in a vague labyrinth - You are to insert your GENITALS into the GLORY HOLES, and PRAY. If you take of your mask, you're persona non-grata and we WILL remove you! If you're ever on the same side of the drywall as another person, we will remove you! Don't forget the color coded condoms, because CONSENT is IMPORTANT. And finally, before you ask, we CANNOT turn off the industrial refrigerators keeping this warehouse at a crisp 55 degrees! Good luck, and godspeed!"

kingmudsy  ·  1407 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Will he go?

I don't think Trump is going to maintain power past a defeat in the election (and in that sense I agree that the article is hyperbolic), but I do think there's danger of Trump not acknowledging the results of the election.

I'm worried about the fallout from forcibly removing Trump from power; Am I going to be arguing with family members over Thanksgiving about whether the democrats "stole" the presidency? How could this be spun by pundit media outlets like Fox to whip up the nationalistic peaks of Trump's base? If there's an armed force of citizens removing him from power as you suggest, are we contending with the military? How does the military decide who to follow - will there be a rift in our armed forces over who to support as president even if the law is clear on the matter? Do we host a contingent election if things are looking grim enough?

I completely agree with the spirit of your comment - if Trump continues to physically occupy the residence after his term, he will have to be physically removed. To pull kleinbl00's comment into this, the odds that his followers stick by him seem pretty slim to me as well...But Trump himself is a fucking moron, and if he doesn't transfer power peacefully, what happens? Best case scenario in my mind is that he's physically removed and tried for treason. It also seems likely that he'd just become a private citizen spouting some bullshit akin to his birther movement, except with the rhetoric of, "I should be president!" Worst case scenario, people actually listen to him.

Maybe I don't need to be worried. I hope I'm being nervous for no good reason. But my faith in Trump and his followers (both citizen and senator) to follow the rule of law could not be lower, and I can't make myself stop feeling nervous.

Felt horribly sick yesterday - Full body chills, aches, headache, and nausea. I was worried I was coming down with something serious until my sister pointed out that I hadn't eaten a solid meal in two and a half days. What the fuck, Hubski? How did I go TWO FUCKING DAYS without eating without even noticing? I don't have body dysmorphia; I'm happy with my body. Is this just a side-effect of WFH dumpstering my mental health? I've been so fucking stressed lately, and I have fatigue from all the bad news that's been coming in...I don't feel depressed though? Is this a different type of depression than I'm used to?

Setting a schedule for myself to eat, even if I feel full. I can't be letting myself deteriorate like this. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING.

DJ Khaled has good music but I'm so fucking shook, even to this day, by the shit he said about oral sex w/ his wife

“A woman should praise the man — the king,” Khaled, now 42, said in the interview. “If you holding it down for your woman I feel like the woman should praise. And a man should praise the queen. But you know, my way of praising is called, ha-ha, ‘How was dinner?’, ‘You like the house you living in? You like all them clothes you getting? I’m taking care of your family, I’m taking care of my family…’ You know, I’m putting in the work.”

He then added that while he "never" goes down on his wife, he expects her to fellate him on the reg nonetheless: “It’s different rules for men,” he said. “You gotta understand, we the king. There’s some things that y’all might not wanna do, but it got to get done. I just can’t do what you want me to do. I just can’t.”

That's the weakest shit I've ever heard. That's like throwing a bone and some water into a bowl, microwaving it, and serving it as soup. WEAK.

Lots of talk about property being destroyed, staying safe, etc. and little to no talk about the reasons for these protests, the deaths of Black Americans across the nation...nothing.

I'm sure you've seen it enough times that it's almost cliche at this point, but I liked the tweet so I'll paraphrase it:

The way people speak is indicative of their priorities, and it's sad to see so many saying, "It's a shame that an unarmed black man was killed by police, but I can't support property damage," rather than, "It's a shame that people's property has been damaged, but I can't support the killing of an unarmed black man by the police."

I'm sure that could be worded better, but you get my point. I don't like that property has been damaged either, but, y'know:

...It is as necessary for me to be as vigorous in condemning the conditions which cause persons to feel that they must engage in riotous activities as it is for me to condemn riots. I think America must see that riots do not develop out of thin air. Certain conditions continue to exist in our society which must be condemned as vigorously as we condemn riots. But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard.

And what is it that America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the Negro poor has worsened over the last few years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice, equality, and humanity.

MLK said it best

Fuck this week.

I'm fine, personally. Work isn't going great, but whatever - we're in a pandemic. I'm lethargic and unmotivated, but I'm an ass in a seat and I'm meeting deadlines so fuck em if they want more right now.

A black man, James Scurlock, was killed by a private citizen in Omaha last Saturday while he was protesting. The shooter was an avowed white supremacist and business owner who ignored repeated warnings from the police to avoid the downtown area and trust law enforcement to protect their property. He had an expired CCP, but brought a gun anyway. He started firing on protestors in front of his store ("Warning shots" evidently), and when a 22 year old man tackled an active shooter to try and disarm him? He was shot twice through the neck and killed. The shooter was released after less than 24 hours with no charges filed, and no bail paid.

That's less time in jail than some protestors I know. For killing a man after he tried to defend himself and his friends. Read about it, if you're curious

"In this community, we prosecute black and brown individuals a lot more for things like we just watched," Wayne said, referring to the surveillance footage. "It's easy to talk to someone when they're alive. It's easy to get their version of the story when they can talk. We don't know what James would've said."

Citing the state's self-defense law, Wayne tweeted, "NONE of these circumstances were present. NONE. The State of Nebraska does NOT allow you to use deadly force to defend property. Further it is NOT a valid defense if you could have retreated."

Protests here have been peaceful since the weekend, during which some glass was smashed downtown and an insurance building was set on fire. It's a shame to see property damaged like that, but it doesn't change my views of the movement as a whole OR the urgency with which I believe we should be protesting.

I've been out every night except last night, when my still recovering ankle was too sore for me to march. Since I couldn't donate time, I donated money to my city's bail fund. The leadership here has been fucking incredible; the protests are being led by a handful of young black advocates who have effectively led marches, kept protests peaceful, controlled crowds with their voices, and guided the city's frustration into a positive and useful direction. I'm so fucking proud of these people - teenagers, some of them - and yet frustrated that my city has such POWERFUL young leaders in it who will never hold public office, because 'Nebraska Nice' only exists in face-to-face interactions and I don't trust people not to bring racism and prejudice into the voting booth with them.

I know shit's going down nationwide this week. I've been involved in my local community, and I've been trying to use my social media platforms to amplify the voices I think need to be heard. It's tiring, but I feel I have no right to complain when I view much of this work as a self-imposed moral imperative. Hope everyone is staying safe and wearing masks / social distancing. Black Lives Matter, y'all.

Let's also not lose sight of the fact that after this address finished, he used teargas and rubber bullets to clear peaceful protesters from around lafayette church for the sake of a photo op. He trampled their first amendment rights so that he could get a fucking presser.

kingmudsy  ·  1417 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Denver Just Shut Down

There's even video of a cop kneeling on the neck of a looter they are arresting - exactly the same thing that killed Floyd in MPLS - and the other cop with him PUSHES THE COP'S KNEE OFF THE PERSON'S NECK.

Saw that video. Made me angry. It took literally less than a second for one cop to stop it. What the fuck were the three cops doing while they watched George Floyd die? We know what it takes to prevent it now. Any one of them could've taken less than a second to move a Derek Chauvin's knee, and none of this would be happening. The country is burning because George Floyd was killed by a psychopath, and because those three men were deaf to the pleas of onlookers and unwilling to look weak, even at the cost of a man's life.

A split-second decision to do their job - to protect and fucking serve - is all it would have taken.

Fuck 12. No justice, no peace.
