Welp, you've inspired a volume of some of Muir's writings to start winging its way through the postal system. Should be here today or tomorrow. I'm between books, so I'll probably start it as soon as it arrives. Thanks! Don't think I would have found him on my own.
Hah, just kidding. Found one this afternoon. New project: convincing myself that my remaining objects are worth owning.conquering bedbugs a while back made
NE Kansas 0F, windchill -12F. Supposed to be near 60F on Sunday. That'll be nice.
They're automating my facility at work. It occurred to me today, while I was getting paid to loaf around because the automated system ate shit yet again: I don't recall seeing much investigation of bad automation will affect society. Some of it will be poorly done. That's just life. Even when our system is ostensibly working, I'm suddenly getting paid to walk 5-6 miles a day trying to find places that the system has been able to deliver work at a worthwhile rate. Union walking pace. On a 5 hour shift. Labor controlling, that ain't. I'd wager that looking back on this period, we'll see that automation initiatives won't be anywhere near parity between companies within a single industry. And that further consolidation of employers will result.
has been stuck in my head for days
Fucking word. I got a Facebook to try and keep up to date on my Boomer family members, but unfollowed them all because old people Facebook is crazy bad.
Oh! This was a Congressional district. So not a statewide race. Sorry. The coffee is slow to work this morning. https://www.census.gov/mycd/?st=39&cd=12 582.000 people over the age of 18. Still not great, but better. I can't find any stats right now on how many of those are actually registered to vote. TBH, I'm not too convinced that's a useful stat in this context anyways. More of a sanitizing one. "Participation rates go up once you only factor in people who at least minimally engaged with the system!"
Werd. I walk a lot more after my last accident.
... I think we might actually strike. Contract runs out Aug 1. Haven't heard anything from the union about voting on the proposal. The alternative is agreeing to extend the life of the old contract. That'd be the second time in a row. _____ On funner news, I think my long bogged down project to design a 3d printer is almost done. Just need to calibrate some tolerances. Right now I need a press to fit some of the dovetail joins together.
- The Parker 51 Aerometric. Mine is from the mid '50s. - The Raleigh Sports. Mine is mid '70s. I have my doubts that my Osprey will be around for a similar length of time, but it is pretty stout. Still looks pretty good even after enduring road rash on my behalf.
Sometimes, it just goes with the territory. rd95's point A is on point, but is probably skewed towards our experiences versus yours as a newcomer: - Emphasis on "know each other well enough": the communal give and take is built up over time as people get to know you. pubski is one main of the spaces on the site where that can happen. - Also, I'd place emphasis on "best to exercise some self restraint". Often, people will tell you when you are stepping on toes. Once you step on toes, everyone has different thresholds for how long they will let the situation go before using the moderation tools. One of the distinguishing features of the site versus reddit is that hubski is built around decentralized moderation (with an on-again-off-again exception for spam). Everyone is responsible for ensuring that the site remains enjoyable for their own use. The site won't run if no one has fun. What constitutes as "fun" varies. Sometimes you get blocked.
Sounds a lot like the I.W.W.'s hayday to me.That's the thing about the gig economy - if you're in it, that means you're willing to take the job for shitty pay with no benefits and no security. You are, by definition, cheaper and worse than the people who won't work gig-to-gig.
that would cause a crisis real quick
TALES FROM VACATION LAD So, my sister has a puppy. She is very sweet, 9 months old, and 85 fucking pounds. Monday was her first day being left uncrated while everyone was out of the house for the day. I'm on vacation, so I agreed to stop by half way through and check up on her. We get there, and discover that she's managed to lock herself in a room. Not just any room. The only room in the house with a keyed interior lock. The lock hasn't been used in yeaaaaaaaaaaaars, and it turns out no one actually knows where the key is. Burned a few hours learning how to pick a lock with flimsy paperclips. _________ Played some Overwatch with a coworker this morning. Apparently my immediate supervisor doesn't realize that I'm on vacation? __________ I kinda wanna buy a cheap Walmart fat bike. I have no use for it, my money would be better spent on new lights and racks, but I want it. sighs, goes off to look at light reviews
https://www.edmunds.com/about/press/auto-loan-lengths-reach-all-time-high-according-to-new-edmunds-analysis.html The average auto loan length reached an all-time high of 69.3 months in June — up 6.8 percent from five years ago.
(June being June 2017)
We've got going - Kale - Basil - Rosemary - Thyme - Tomatoes (San Marzano and Beefstake) - Borage I've still got some seeds for Habaneros and Lettuce that haven't been started yet. The internet has informed us that we were overwatering the shit out of our poor kale. The warning sign was when mushrooms sprouted. There might be some hard choices ahead if we can't scrounge up enough containers to rehome all the wee little sproutlets.
They're like pancakes: the first ones come out weird but towards the end you've got your groove on. I rage quit the first time I tried to make falafel in a blender. Threw the entire thing in the freezer and gave it another shot a different day. You'd think it'd work out fine... you'd think that.
This is just horseshoe theory, right? As a liberal, my world view isn't wrong. It isn't really even being challenged. The regressive left is simply over zealous in their application of my world view. They don't know it, and actually disagree with the premise, but we're coming from the same place and therefore in-depth revaluation of my political philosophy is unnecessary. The difference is more quantitative than qualitative. ____ Edit: Ok, if you don't know much about John Gray, and believe in the concept of social progress, this is just horseshoe theory, right?
Quite popular, apparently. 😢
Reddit is speculating that they did something similar to this: https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/19/17138846/google-police-location-data-crime-scenes
Willful ignorance is stupidity. ---- edit: On the rare occasions that I've managed to beat down their "FAKE NEWS!" firewall, and actually expose them to, say, Trump's praise of Duterte along with what Duterte has said/done, the response isn't "I didn't know". Rather: "I don't care." The people who were riding the Trump Train simply because the other dogs were barking too jumped off a while ago.
I made it to the end! They think we'll botch retraining. ...While the pace of technological change is arguably accelerating, we have seen no evidence yet that the rate of human adaptation to jarring economic dislocations has improved. If anything, the experience of the two recent US recessions points in the opposite direction—an aging labor force is becoming less able to learn new skills and find work. The demographic outlook for the next decades suggests that the labor force's speed of adjustment to disruptions might actually worsen.
Our base-case scenario forecasts an acute shortage of highly skilled, high-income workers in the 2020s as investment in automation technologies takes off. Over time, workers will acquire new skills and migrate toward the jobs in demand. However, shifts of this nature take a considerable amount of time.
Skimming the first bit of the McKinsey, I feel like you can probably guess what Bain has to say. Every time McKinsey says things could go well, just assume that it doesn't. The gist I got of their roadmap is that they think there is a good chance we'll Boom (capital investments, increased productivity), Bust (wage depression, pension crisis, unemployment, slow retraining), and that the Government will then get hands on again. I skipped over some of the "here's how your leadership teams can prepare for the future in the exciting WORLD OF BUSINESS" bits, so I might have missed something but I don't think so.
Don't forget about reopening the case as an October Surprise. I mean, I wouldn't put it past the FBI to want to interfere in an election. But if they were trying to put their hands on the scale to benefit Hillary, they did a piss poor job of it.Why would they investigate Hilary, reveal she was under investigation only to exonerate her?
First off I would just like to say fuck his digital signature. Now that we've got that out of the way: Capitalism didn't suddenly spring forth as an inauguration gift to Eisenhower. Almost all of the graphs are from 1950-ish onward. Wind the clock back farther, and 1950 looks less benchmarky and more outliery.(pdf warning). There's a rant that could go here that sounds a bit like: something something nlrb something something wildcat something something something West Virginia. Our leading indicator for wages normally provides a 15 month advanced warning of changes in wages. It is pretty good and all the ingredients are the same ones that have accurately worked for decades, yet the relationship has broken down.
There is an extremely high correlation historically between the index of the number of strikes in the US with the wage growth of workers. Today, strikes are extremely rare, and this in part explains why wages are so low.
Quoth the bread book: All this may please those who like the theatre, but it is not revolution. Fast forward 120+ years and we've got a proud (only somewhat sarcastically) tradition of fucking up on that score. Mocking Trump and generating tones of internal noise is way easier than actually getting shit done. Mind you, a lot of the time we don't actually know how to get shit done even when we try. Coming together with diametrically opposed views, they are forced to form arbitrary alliances in order to create majorities that can but last a day. Wrangling, calling each other reactionaries, authoritarians, and rascals, incapable of coming to an understanding on any serious measure, dragged into discussions about trifles, producing nothing better than bombastic proclamations, yet taking themselves seriously, unwitting that the real strength of the movement is in the streets.
Been feeling the music from the Tales from the Borderlands title sequences. Also some vaporwave.
I'm now playing Overwatch on PC.
I'm late to pubski. 3D Printers My delta 3d printer project stalled out in November. I've printed everything I need to finish it, but I haven't bought the "vitamins"; i.e. all the fasteners and such. I liked designing the bits that I did, but the idea of building wasn't so exciting. Today, I started designing a new printer based on a really old cable layout. My goal is to use as little fasteners as possible without compromising quality. We will see how I do. My bet is that most printers are vastly overbuilt in the name of precision that won't really be visible anyways after the sloppy process of spitting out molten plastic. Work My old boss was actively trying to fire me. Well, not just me but all of my family that worked there. He wasn't competent enough to actually pull it off, but the effort was there. The best he managed was an offence I could have gone to the Department of Labor for and gotten him shitcanned, and teaching me that management can't produce a written copy of the attendance policy. My new boss? He keeps telling me what a good job I'm doing. He's calm. He's respectful. It is fucking weird. I'm so use to being in combat with management. It's weird.
