Ronda Rousey can put me and sleeper hold and whisper facts about pokemon to me. Back to reality, I don't think she was saying people should think muscles are sexy but that she's comfortable with who she is. I think it was more of a "I respect myself because I've worked towards something" statement. Also, Ronda gained weight for her sport's illustrated swimsuit shoot because she felt she needed a more feminine shape.

I agree. At my favourite bar, I can usually just walk in and have a pint set down in front of me. The staff at your local bar or restaurant become like family, replacing them with machines seems wrong.

This is a refreshing ideal. Too often we see news articles blasting people's idea's or actions without telling the full story, usually to sway politics. I admit that I am often affected by these but this usually gets me invested to look further into the story. I am sad to admit that I often come out disgusted with both myself (for being gullible) and the original source (for being deceitful). The best way would be to judge someone by their intent but that can be tricky as no one can read another's mind.

This hit me hard. Thanks for sharing.

junkysam  ·  3206 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Web We Have to Save

You described almost exactly what I was thinking while reading this article. It's not so much that "the old internet" is dying but more that a larger mainstream audience is using it. In the past the internet was mostly used by a younger and/or niche user base and seen as abnormal by most people. Now that more and more people have smartphones, laptops and PCs with access to the internet, the user base has become more homogenized. It is no big surprise that content seems to be stream lined and made bite-sized.

I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing, as I believe that there is still a large user base searching out beyond the social media hubs. We see the users of sites like reddit (and hubski) constantly looking for and sharing content from across the web. This content may be random, dumb cat photos or a long form blog taking a philosophical look at the evolution of the internet.

It does seem upsetting that a majority of users will ignore most of the internet and only use social media but I don't think that a lot of them would be using an internet without social media. When you take a look at the evolution of the internet you also need to look at the growing user base and what's attracting them.

My biggest problem with this is that they are trying to recreate the Batman v Superman fight from Dark Knight Returns. In the comic Batman and Superman have known each other for years and are good friends. Superman ultimately holds back because of this. In this movie, Superman (not knowing Bats) shouldn't give two shits about completely disabling Batman. But of course it won't happen like that.

Cool, thanks for the second article too.

junkysam  ·  3210 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The neuroscience of placebo effects

Very interesting article. I wonder how much the placebo effect causes ill effects on patients. I've a friend who seem to be more likely to feel bad side-effects of drugs but they also educate themselves on the drugs they are taking.

Thanks for your explanation. Now the future seems little more awesome :D

junkysam  ·  3211 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hover technology worth the investment?

Yeah, I realize the volkswagen was more PR stunt but I figured I'd include it because a woman I work worth thought it was real. From what I understand is that the Hendo hoverboard and Toyota's plans rely on the technology mag-lev trains use but I personally don't see that working well with the way our road systems are currently set up. Thanks for the reply!

At first I thought it meant he got the prescription of quaaludes in 2005. I was pretty sure they stopped making those and started to question my sanity. then later it stated he just saved them up from the 1970s. That's a long time to plan. I'm sad it took so long for the truth to come out but at least it did.

junkysam  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why this Reddit revolt will fail, just like every other one

I don't think anyone is expecting reddit to up and die in a matter of days. The more reddit drama goes on though the more people will look to other sites to share content. Sure people might still go to reddit and well as new sites (such as hubski or voat) but it will be the secondary site. As more drama happens and more people make reddit the secondary site, all of reddit's content will become stale and irrelevant. When this happens reddit will die slowly not overnight.

Sorry I offended you. No reason to become emotional ;)

Thanks. I really enjoyed this, especially towards then end.

junkysam  ·  3215 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: PSA: Welcome to Hubski, Redditors.

I think it will also keep away the type of people that like to go on mass downvote brigades. I never understood why people would look up and downvote every single post a single user made because of one stupid repost.

junkysam  ·  3215 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Awesome dissection: Conversation with a Woman

I agree with you whole heartedly. The author constantly tries to undermine her opinion because he believes she is parroting the mass media. Not giving her any credit to her own thoughts is being condescending. If someone were to speak to me that way I would also become emotional. I am a man and I often find myself becoming more emotional than I should in arguments and know women that can maintain their composure better than myself. The author is just a terrible person with a major superiority complex.

junkysam  ·  3215 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Welcome to Hubski

I agree. Comment sections on reddit always seem to break down into the cynical and sarcastic variety with very little actual conversation, especially when there is internal drama. I really like this sites ideas with user wheel and badge over the karma and gold of reddit. Hopefully I am able to grow to love this site as I used to with reddit.

junkysam  ·  3215 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: PSA: Welcome to Hubski, Redditors.

I was also mostly a lurker on reddit. I found that most comment sections were comprised of cynics and comedians (and, as you said, who ever can make the best pun). The way the karma system rewards these types of posts seems to drown out any real conversation that might of been going on. Hubski seems to me (in my short time here) to have a better structure to support real conversation. I hope that both you and I can grow to enjoy this site and be part of what seems to be an great community.
