I will add this to the list of reasons why I don't wear deodorant.

Instead of just taking a few genes from Barley and sticking it into rice, we should just make a new super human-made grain-starch-grass-plant... that you can all use for biofuel and clothing if you want... beer and bread too.

We need this plant.

Well... Attempt #2 for me, so far I am on day 5ish or something so far... but I have been Chomping on Nicorette gum the whole time... we will see what happens.

hanszyme  ·  3161 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: New Social Network, time to stop smoking.

I am trying it this time with Nicortette gum this time.

What happens when multiple people use it at once?

yeah, that sounds more likely, but still earthlings spread.

Or, could you do that for me?

hanszyme  ·  3187 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Where do you find content?

Google+ is pretty good. I had forgotten about it for the past few months, at the time it helped me get off of facebook... now I see it will help me with the reddit... google+ is still that secluded mountain top with just a few tents, but the view is amazing (the news feed).

hanszyme  ·  3187 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski podcast - from a few years back... SPACE

I just listened to the Silence one. It reminded me of a thought I had the other day after I found probably the quietest spot in Sao Paulo (a very noisy city) on a windy evening... if you are sitting in a very windy area the wind can block out all other sounds all you hear is air, silence... I thought it was more profound at the time, but your podcast reminded me of that (or a reflection of the idea).

Joe rogan podcast check it out

I was going to post it as well, but I then looked around a bit more... it seems like this is being squashed by alot of other people. Here is a counter argument.

hanszyme  ·  3187 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What cancelled TV show do you wish had a chance to properly end?

Better off ted. I should really re-watch that show, I hardly remember it but I know that it just ended, so sad. I also enjoyed Flashforward, it was cancelled for good reason I guess, but I liked it and it ended on such a cliff hanger for the next season.

Hubski reminds me of a group sitting around a campfire

If you wanted a more 'free speech' platform frizbee
I clicked the link it is a printing service in the UK. Are you saying that the only free speech medium is mom and pop printers?
hanszyme  ·  3187 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Voat is working for now

I went ahead and just made v/hubski. I do not really want to be the mod so if anyone else wants to be a mod let me know...

I am not sure what the purpose of that verse is, but it's there...

hanszyme  ·  3187 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What was your first Hubski post?

Mine was:

I really like hubski, but my only complaint is that it is small and not much content. It needs to grow, and the only way its going to grow is if people post stuff, so post away my friend, post away!

Did you find a link?

That's not good.

Just do what you want to do, cold email your dream labs... that is the trick.

THE MARTIAN! by Andy Weir

hanszyme  ·  3188 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Scientists of hubski, what science do you science?

All good, I guess it should have just gone in the text anyway.

hanszyme  ·  3188 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Scientists of hubski, what science do you science?

I read some stuff on the internet about a drug called Valporate a year or so ago, apparently some have noticed that they can learn languages more like a child with it. I am looking for an easy solution like that...

hanszyme  ·  3188 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Astronaut Requirements (could you be one?)

Holy shit, the Martian is awesome! And it is all over the internet . The Author, Andy Weir, seems to have tried his best to give it away to everyone he could for free, I think he is OK with sharing it around.

Dude, listen to the first 5 mins of the audiobook.

Edit: let me know if the link does not work in the US or somewhere... I think it should.

hanszyme  ·  3188 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, what are your hobbies, and how did you discover them?

Yeah, but there are also a lot of kits out there to get started with. I am also more interested in the automation and software side of things. For one of my work projects I started playing around with openCV, which is basically a software suite that can be used to give your computer a visual cortex... like your webcam can capture images but openCV can see the images and be trained to understand what it is looking at. I never quite figured out how to do those 4 or so lines of code that would have automated the monotonous watching of trail cameras from my project, but it is technically possible.

Anyway, if I had a little remote control car or quad copter with a few cameras on it attached to a raspberryPI I am pretty sure I could get it to find a poweroutlet to charge itself when it's battery gets low.

hanszyme  ·  3188 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Scientists of hubski, what science do you science?

Way more lab research than the field, I put the ecology section in my PhD proposal only because I wanted to go to the woods and that aspect of fungal Bioluminescence has not been studied since the 1980s... someone had to do it why not me, I like the woods.

But yeah I really like what I am doing, I like my subject area, and I am so close to finding the genes (assuming the next few things go as expected, fingers crossed).

Right now I am procrastinating from watching the field ecology videos I have collected, over the past year. I am actually taking a week off from wet-lab to get the ecology data annotation finished, I like collecting the ecology data, I do not like reviewing it...

hanszyme  ·  3188 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Scientists of hubski, what science do you science?

I suck at new languages... how do I get past that while still existing in the English internet world the majority of my day behind my computer?

hanszyme  ·  3188 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Scientists of hubski, what science do you science?

can you explain that like I am 6?

hanszyme  ·  3188 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Scientists of hubski, what science do you science?

Or you could do what I did and sneak in an ecology (field work) part into your PhD proposal for molecular biology things.

What do you like so far in biology? Specific type of organism?

Have you started doing research in someones lab? I am sure you have heard before, but hands on experience as an undergrad is so crucial, and the earlier you start the more time you have to play around and find a lab you like.
