Sir, I need to know where I can get some business hammocks.

    a chromecast

I've had one for a while now, and it's great ... when it works. For some reason I have more problems with the wifi where I work now, so the connection to my Plex media server isn't stable enough. I've moved my Intel NUC into my living room instead, and while it is a more complicated user experience (keyboards and mouses and stuff!), it is more stable. Plus it gives me more options.

The ease of just using my phone to play anything on my Chromecast was awesome, though.

all my plans continue on regardless of the outcome of this

I've never really had plans more than a year or half a year in advance, and it sounds like you have more detailed plans? Like a plan for many years ahead? I'm just curious.

Yesterday I watched a couple walking towards the city center, and it hit me that it will take years before my wife and I can ever again walk like that - alone and without worrying about our kids. We have one 2 year old and one 10 days old.

Not that it's necessarily bad - it's just different. We chose to get kids, and we love them. It's fascinating how much your life changes when you have kids, and how fast it all seems natural. I hardly remember what it was like to have no obligations.

    silly internet drama

I'm not so sure this is the correct classification, the Internet is a very real part of our lives, and Reddit has millions of users - so it's not some old lady telling you how to dispose off your doggie doodoo.

fnord42  ·  3213 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why do you shower in the morning?

It would make sense to shower in the evening, as to not drag all your greas into bed, but whenever I do that I have to shower in the morning as well, to freshen up.

When we were talking about traveling at work, I mentioned that I went to China once, and realized that that was 20 years ago.

That last comment by Yishan was particularly interesting - there must be a lot more going on internally at Reddit.

more circle-jerky than reddit is now
Mind. Blown.
fnord42  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Creator of Reddit Notes explains what he did at reddit and why he was hired

I guess my fundamental question is what on Reddit is worth paying for?

People are heavily invested in the communities in the subreddits. You can get communities for free elsewhere, you can't get those specific ones. And let's not make this a discussion on the quality of the subreddits, the users obviously think they're worth spending a lot of time on.

become a giant circle-jerk contest of who can say the thing to attract the most upvotes
Well, that is in a way how it is today - but there's no money involved, just karma or imaginary Internet points.

But yeah, sounds you're correct.

fnord42  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How was your weekend?

Sorry to hear you lost your job. What kind of jobs are you looking for?

fnord42  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: High school graduate here, I'm stuck on figuring out what to do with my life!

Don't worry about it. If you can afford it, take some time to think about it and explore your options. The older I get, the less important I think having a career is. Of course, it depends on your goals - but it doesn't sound like you have any goals, which is perfectly fine! I never had any goals either, but here I am with a nice job, a house and two kids.

I never planned it would turn out like this - I just studied something I liked and took the jobs I could get. I was accidentally good at what I did, I suppose.

Consider yourself lucky - you're young, and just the fact that you're reflecting over all this makes you sound like an ok person. You have endless options and opportunities, and it's a lot easier to explore them while you're young.

"Maybe I'm not meant to be around for very long?"

No one is meant to be one thing or the other. You might fall over and die tomorrow, or you might live to become 120 years old. Who knows? No one, that's who. Treat life as an adventure, and just remember that life is what's happening right here and now.

That was very interesting! Feeds well into the discussions here:

I really believe that a crowdfunded decentralized community site is the future, it is only a matter of time before it is a reality.

fnord42  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The social aggregator is a terrible business model.

[...] how easy is it for a site to become captured by outside interests when the folks that made the deals can be replaced in the next elections?

Since they are elected by the community, it should hopefully not be a problem, since they represent the wishes of the community. Some sort of safeguards need to be in place, perhaps.

I recommend checking this out, Reddit was on its way to become decentralized, but it was stopped by a new round of funding and Yishan leaving:

Wow, that's amazing. Amazing that they didn't have better security. You'd think they would have taken measures to prevent something like this from happening.

fnord42  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Alright, Hubski, what are you drinking?

Australian alcohol is incredibly expensive... At least here.

If you want to play the "which country is more expensive"-game, I think I'll win, although I must admit I thought Australia was cheaper.

I'm not sure how you'll go trying to find it at a decent price (or at all!) in Norway.

I'll have to import it myself if I want it. So yeah, it'll be expensive, but good single malt usually is.

Yes, of course, you're right - not sure why I forgot about those martial arts. Kyokushin gets some criticism for not doing strikes to the head, and I suppose you can argue that in boxing and muay thai you wear gloves and you do have to hold back in training. Still a lot better than throwing kicks into thin air though, and it gives you a huge advantage over untrained opponents.

As for gi/no-gi, I prefer gi because it feels more technical, and it gives me an advantage over younger and more athletic training partners. I enjoy training both, though.

I'm glad you liked it, I'll post more in the future.

Except for my very first job, all jobs I've had have been through my network. I've still had to do a good job and have appropriate qualifications, but getting a recommendation from someone who knows the people hiring always helps.

Last time I saw B5, I checked - all episodes advance the plot, it's just more subtle in some of the first episodes.

A rusty offroad bike I inherited from my nephew. The last time I spent a lot of money on a bike, I couldn't be bothered to keep it in good condition, and it deteriorated rapidly. I currently use it for transporting my son to kindergarten in a bike trailer, and myself to work.

Tasmanian whiskys?! That I have to try sometime. Seems hard to find here in Norway, though. What's a good one to start with?
