This was an encouraging story. I am glad to see a successful family business put resources into the future of their company but also their community. Good on Tabasco, I hope they continue to fight the good fight.

I noticed that some of my interests don’t really have a lot of content on hubski as well. However, that means there is room to build that community or interest over here. Try posting topics in whatever areas and see what sticks.

For many women, guns are the great equalizer. Without a weapon she may not have been able to overcome the strength and weight of this crazy man.

This is something I have been observing for years. As a tutor, one of the biggest reasons students would say they were visual or auditory learners was to excuse the fact that they could not effectively read. This idea was reinforced when I began substitute teaching high schoolers.

Have you sat in any of the post 2014 Forester or Impreza seats? I have done several 8+ hour trips in both cars and have found them comfy. On the flip side, my 2010 impreza seats were back breakers.

I am not overly familiar with Gray, but it seems odd to me that his background is analytic philosophy yet he is a proponent of Meliorism.

extra_nos  ·  2208 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The problem of hyper-liberalism

I think what you said here is right to the point. The radical left is not being called out. The problem is, when they are, they recede right into buzzwords like racist, xenophobe, etc... It's not that those blanket name callings are accurate or legitimate, but sections of the media, universities, and some activist groups harness and praise this destructive behavior.

Interestingly, the destructive tension and elimination ideologies of the far left and right mirror that of the political atmosphere pre-World War I and II. It will be intriguing to see how the next 20-50 years unfold.

extra_nos  ·  2208 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The problem of hyper-liberalism

It is detrimental to learning and inquiry to label a worldview and epistemology unlike your own as anathema. While the university is indeed a test case for this toxic behavior, it is happening in all realms of public discourse.

I have been making big pushes for better SEO. We have a staff meeting on Tuesday where I hope to bring it up again.

Rodriguez was a lawful permanent resident. His status was revoked when he was convicted,
One of the most devistating parts of our “justice” system is the removal of an individuals rights. Even without the wrongful imprisonment, his rights as a resident should never have been revoked.

I am all for jumping ship away from Facebook, but I wonder what smaller companies can do. Tesla and Playboy don’t need Facebook ads to gain recognition. However the non-profit I work for uses Facebook as a big part of content distrabution.

This is pretty cool. I grew up in Carson City and drove past Mark Twain’s house everyday on my way to school.

extra_nos  ·  2210 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Mother Bears Are Staying With Their Cubs Longer, Study Finds

The link between conservation and hunting is an interesting one. All of the hunters I know are very strong on conservation and protection of animals and the environment, although I know this is not universal. I plan on taking up hunting this year, but it will most likely be entirely duck and upland game.

extra_nos  ·  2210 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Desire to Fit In Is The Root of Almost All Wrongdoing

In a way, this concept is present in the narrative of Genesis: "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God." Yet, while this might be a root of wrongdoing under this paradigm, it is not the cause of each instance of wrong doing.

extra_nos  ·  2210 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Mother Bears Are Staying With Their Cubs Longer, Study Finds

The conclusion in this article almost made it seem like the bears are using an "if this, then that" sort of logic. Only one line was really clear

The hunting is filtering out the females that keep their young for a smaller amount of time.
Females that were already staying with their young longer for some other reason are who continue to survive and thrive.

Another striking comment

Last year, Congress rolled back a law that banned killing bears and wolves in their family dens on 16 federally owned Alaskan wildlife refuges.
This seems very un-sportsman like, and since neither bears nor wolves are a necessary source of food, even for those who rely on hunting, I don't see the point. Who wants to brag about taking a trophy animal that was hiding in its den? That eliminates any skill or challenge that would have been gained.

I have been on for 4days, and I am liking it more and more. Things are conversational. If someone disagrees with you, they have to explain why they can't just hit a button.

No problem. I love making the podcast, and nearly every episode has a handful of book recommendations. We have covered the basics of Christian doctrine, Apologetics, and we have some great episodes on figures in church history. We are in our third year now, and this month I became the director of the 1517 podcasting network which I am launching in April.

Anytime you want more reading hit me up.

In addition to the books, I produce and co-host a podcast with Drs. of Theology, History, and Philosophy. We did a series on apologetics that touches on a lot of this.

During undergrad trained under Dr. Rod Rosenbladt and Dr. John Warwick Montgomery. They both apply analytic philosophy to Christian thought. Dr. Montgomery wrote a book called Tractatus Logico Theologicus Despite its name, it is straightforward to read and is an excellent place to start in regards to the philosophy of Christian thought. I work for 1517 one of his publishers, enter code "hubski" at checkout for 15% off.

Other Suggestions:

- C.S. Lewis Mere Christianity, and An Experiment in Criticism

- For Systematics the best reformation one is Philip Melanchthon's Loci Communes

- Modern lay level systematic Called to Believe by Dr. Steve Mueller (I studied systematics under Mueller, keep in mind this book is written for students who want to work in the church)

- Philosophy: Ayer Languge, Truth, and Logic Wittgenstein Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus

This is only the tip of the iceberg haha. What I tried to come up with is the intersection of faith, reason, and a basic look at a historical/systematic approach to doctrine.

extra_nos  ·  2210 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why Evangelicals—Still!—Support Trump

I have spent many years studying both Theology and Philosophy and am currently finishing my MA in Systematic and Philosophical theology from the University of Nottingham. Your observation about axioms is spot on. Wittgenstein described many religious arguments as playing word games. Two individuals can argue all day long, but if their definition of a term is not the same or at the very least agreeable, then there is no definite conclusion to be had.

American evangelicalism has one of the weakest systematic theologies and is built primarily upon fideism. One must give up outside thinking and enter the circle of cohesive thought to know anything at all. This goes against historical Christianity which in fact relies on eyewitness account and outside data for its conclusions. It is also common for evangelicals to assume things about Christian doctrine that Scripture does not necessarily reveal. Animals and souls for instance. The Imagio Dei does not inherently imply that animals are without souls. And in fact, if one believes in the fall, he believes that man has rejected the Imagio Dei.

The problem is not necessarily religion or Christianity but is the circular reasoning and fideism adopted by American Evangelicalism.

extra_nos  ·  2211 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: John Paul Stevens: Repeal the Second Amendment

Tha is a pretty far extrapolation of what I outlined here. There are some weapons, which no one person is permitted to operate even within a military context, missiles, tanks, drones, etc... require consensus and chain of authority. A means of personal defense as a regulated militia perhaps in its most basic sense applies to the ownership of weapons that a soldier is regulated to carry. Handguns, rifles, shotguns. Personal defense weapons.

extra_nos  ·  2211 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: John Paul Stevens: Repeal the Second Amendment

You can't cry "fire" in a crowded theater. You can't print slander.
Well, you can, there are just consequences for those actions. Consequences which also regulate the use of firearms, you can't fire a gun in theater, and you can't shoot at someone you hate.

but you can't limit the access to them in any way to citizens in good standing.
Further regulation and licensing wouldn't prohibit those in good standing from obtaining even if they had mal-intent. This is why the argument for repeal of 2nd A is stronger than further regulation. However, the philosophical implications of a repeal are huge and would fundamentally alter all aspects of law and life in America.
extra_nos  ·  2211 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: John Paul Stevens: Repeal the Second Amendment

This is, of course, a philosophical assertion, yet upheld by many different philosophies. The value and preservation of human life are central to Western thought. The argument can be made from autonomy (Locke), Natural law (Hobbes), and even, virtue ethics focused on vocation and common good of neighbor.

Freedom of speech, expression, and religion are always asserted and rarely argued. The constitution upholds a set of principles promised to every individual in this land that is not contingent on the Government nor the philosophy of those individuals. The sad thing is, those principles all essentially assert that all human life is valuable, yet our history shows that we have been more than willing to treat some people as sub-human.

considering the state of the military technology that the United States armed forces could bring to bear in the hypothetical scenario where our national standing army decides to neutralize the states.
This is part of the point, if a portion of citizens did rise up, the US would be forced to respond either militarily or via some sort of negotiation. If it did neutralize any states or peoples, It would be essential for those remaining to protect themselves, their families, and their communities even if it can only do so at a fundamental level. That ability to provide protection is a natural right and why the constitution protects it.
