You too, fam. I still lurk around here and try to keep up. I just don't have much to say these days.

coffeesp00ns  ·  2097 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Movie fans of Hubski, what film do you think best represents your favorite genre?

Alien.

Alien is so many things. It is a fantastic sci-fi movie, monster movie, horror movie. Alien, and the sequel, Aliens, are two of my favourite movies of all time.

The people I know who use it pronounce it "Mix". I have a friend who was Mx. Capital Pride 2016. Capital being Ottawa,

edit: as a sidenote, i think "Mx. " Is a really good gender neutral solution for how to address people in a formal way. Ontario has also started to include an "x" for gender designation on drivers licenses.

coffeesp00ns  ·  2738 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, what are your plans for the day?

I'm procrastinating right now, but I've got a few things on my list today.

- sharpen my knives for work

- practice music for performance and audition

- teach

I also gotta tidy my room up a bit - bunch of sheet music left out.

I may not feel bad for trump, but I can feel bad for anyone who DID want to vote republican and now feel like they have zero options. There are a lot of disenfranchised people in the US right now, even more than usual.

Welp, it's official.

edit: I wonder if this will mean a third referendum for scotland - they voted overwhelmingly to Remain.

man, fuck Erdogan. not only is he shit to his own people, he is simultaneously trying to erase the "dream of Ataturk" by bringing more muslim focus to turkey (eliminating its purposeful religious neutrality) while also strengthening his call-backs to the Ottoman empire by denying the Armenian genocide.

hot garbage.

I'd get myself set up with some sort of allowance, put the rest in trust, and keep going to school to learn shit.

Wow, The Steve-Steve meetup, the Philly Meetup, the Toronto Meetup... this is a week of Hubski IRL!!!

I'm getting myself ready for the Toronto meetup, and also for a meetup with the lady I want to study with for my next stage of education. Stressful, but also a lot of excitement involved.

I've been writing an article on a piece of music with what I think is an interesting story. anyone interested in looking it over? (not totally done yet).

coffeesp00ns  ·  3152 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: My friend died

I post this with complete sincerity:

I'm living with my folks right now, and one of their cats is in sort of the palliative care section of her life. She's been in and out of my life for a long time, as I've been home, at university, home. Her arthiritis is pretty bad now, and she doesn't move much anymore unless she has to, But she still has the same personality. My dad (not a cat lover), says she and the other cat are "irreplaceable", by which he means "No more cats", but he's also right in that these two cats have serious personality, and are truly irreplaceable as fixtures in my life.

No shame in grief for an animal who has affected your life. Be well, Flag.

the weight is just a part of it. You gotta remember I basically look in the mirror and hate what I see. this whole process is about trying to improve that situation ;).

Thank you for the compliment on me, the person, though. I try to be a good hubski citizen and think you're pretty great too.

coffeesp00ns  ·  3211 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Reddit's CEO resigns

dawg, you are reddit's product to advertisers and investors. Your existence in the comment sections especially. All they care about is the time you spend ON reddit looking AT reddit. They don't care what content you "create" (Creation being kind of spurious on reddit considering most people don't make or create what they posted) so long as it isn't illegal and it makes people talk ON reddit.

coffeesp00ns  ·  3217 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: At Age 3 — Transitioning From Jack To Jackie : NPR Ed : NPR

I met a 4 year old whose grandmother brought them to the Trans support group I was going to. They repeatedly, over and over, insisted they were a boy. I don't fall into this narrative, I figured shit out later in life, but I've known kids of a variety of ages, and they all knew who they were very, very solidly. there was no "wishy-washyness"

The difference between what you told your mom and dad, versus what these kids are doing, is Sustained behaviour. This is not one day I'm a girl, one day I'm a boy, it's behaviours like pressing down to hide genetalia, it's repeated, consistent insistence on "girl" clothing, or "boy" clothing, and several other indicators. (specifically the quoted text from the DSM-IV on that page)

Do they understand the societal ramifications of transitioning? No, it takes experience to learn that you're going to be hated for something you can't change about yourself. But they do know who they are.

I really hope they don't do anything permanent until the kid's old enough to make that decision.

As it stands currently, the only thing that can be done until the age of consent (16-18, generally), is to put a child on Puberty Blockers. All this does is stave off puberty until the child is of legal age to make the decision. If the child decides not to transition, then all they have is a late puberty - no fuss, no muss. Up until puberty, kids look pretty similar, so generally no action is taken except to let the child societally present as the gender they prefer.

I have a jerb!

I applied for dishwasher/food prep job, and got it. I was thinking "Food prep? I've cut raw veg a bunch before. Kale, and such, right?"

I get there, and it's like "Naw dawg, you gotta make Creme Anglais. Also, Creme Brulee. And do dishes."

So now I can make Creme Anglais. It's a real pain in the ass, but I can do it.

This is my first week on Anti-androgens. I do this alone for a month, see how things are, then get onto estrogen. Even though I have a lot of stresses in my life (especially job search), the fact that I'm on this road now is a huge weight off my shoulders. I'm pretty stoked, overall.

I'm playing in a cover band for a local Rib Fest. I've had a week to learn 3 hours of music, most of which is not complicated, but just took time to learn. My dad's coworker is one of the guitarists, and their bassist had to back out because "Babies" (totally understandable), and kind of left them in a lurch, so they called me up. I'm having a pretty good time. turns out things like Country Roads, Mary Jane's Last Dance, and other bar band standards are kind of fun to play - All my bands have never been able to agree on covers.

coffeesp00ns  ·  3246 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Earthlings documentary - has anyone dared to watch it?

I stopped when it started to compare meat eating people to nazis and racists - So, 3:18. This film is preaching to the choir, and I doubt it would actually spur someone who eats meat to stop doing so. It's also, like most documentaries filmed with a slant (i.e. almost all documentaries), filled with "Hypothetheories" (not my word, but a good one) - untested arguments that affirm the position of the arguer, so they never think to apply even the most rudimentary scrutiny. Michael Moore is someone who is notably guilty of this, and I say that as someone who generally agrees with his point of view regarding gun laws and manufacturing.

Demonizing the people you are trying to reach is a really, really bad way to make positive change in the world.

-----

I have been reducing my meat intake, but not because I believe that I shouldn't eat meat, but because they cost SO MUCH WATER as a crop. Considering how much meat is raised in California (where, as we know, there is a huge drought that is in many ways worsened by human causes), and the amount of water it takes to raise beef to "slaughter" age, it's just not a continuable practice as we do it. Beef takes 2500 GALLONS of water PER POUND.

I have also stopped eating almonds for similar reasons. Every almond you eat takes 1 gallon of water to grow. Let that shit sink in. one of these takes one of these to produce. THEN think about how many almonds it takes to create 2L of Almond Milk.

This recipe adjusted to create 2L of almond milk uses 425g of almonds, and 2L of water (all the other recipes I checked also seemed to have a similar water : final volume ratio. I guess only so much comes out of the almonds, and you can only squeeze so much out of the wet almond paste). The average almond weighs 1.2g. That means you need approx 354 almonds to make this 2L recipe of almond milk. 2L of almond milk = 354 GALLONS of agricultural water used, plus the 2L needed to make the milk. that is un-fucking-sustainable.

want more, cited information? watch this

Stop trying to sell me, and other meat eaters on the "Animals are people/animals feel feelings" argument which will continually fall on deaf ears, and use the SIGNIFICANTLY MORE IMPORTANT AND IMPACTFUL ARGUMENT that the way we farm is legitimately environmentally unsustainable and needs to be changed.

I feel lost.

This is week 2 of living back home, and I'm still in the process of getting my life back together after living in the US. Importing/registering my car, getting a new phone, getting a JOB... I'm having isues staying positive and not feeling overwhelmed.

On the plus side, HRT appointment is next week! it will be nice to move down that road, maybe come to like the person I see in the mirror.
