caelum19  ·  3591 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ignore users newer than X days

As someone who joined the site roughly half an hour ago, I agree.

I'd happily browse the site ignored while reading the content, the sort of person who leaves a site or thinks worse of it just because s/he's not getting enough attention isn't one I'd want to interact with in the community.

this would keep maturity levels higher, because someone who can't cope with the immaturity following summer break or another community leaking into this will have the power to ignore them, and stay with us, aswell as the possibly immature new-commers being likely to leave due to lack of attention.

And that's why in my (low valued) opinion this should be a feature.

caelum19  ·  3234 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hello there! I'm yet another migrator over from reddit and I have a few questions.

Welcome!

Where do I go to see comment or post replies?

There is a little chat symbol next to posts to go directly to the comments.

Is there voting? Is content that is not welcome discouraged in any way?

You can click the little 'hubwheel' on the top-left corner of posts to show that you appreciate them, if this is a post, it will 'Share' it to all your followers and if it's a comment, it will float closer to the top in that thread. You can hubwheel as many posts as you like.

There are no moderators or admins on Hubski in the sense you get them in Reddit, users do all the filtering. So you're free to post whatever you like, and if someone doesn't like what you're posting, they can click on your name and mute, filter or hush you(Mute stops them from posting on your posts, filtering stops you from having to see what they say and hushing just sorts them to the bottom of every thread.) personally I find this system much better than reddits.

    Is there text formatting?
Yep! click 'markup tips' on the top-right bit of a text box. The formatting is mostly the same as Reddit's, except with some differences such as \> being replaced with surrounding quoted text in '|'

If I have niche interests, how would I go about cultivating a community to explore them? (Aka /r/abrathatfits, /r/trollxchromosomes, etc)
Hubski functions similar to Twitter in this sense, you post whatever you want whereever you want to. Because of the follower system, the site consists of social bubbles based off who get along rather than only people interested in similar topics(You can search tags to find people of similar interest, but you're not forced to spend time together because of your similar interests)

A while ago I asked a pretty niche question about OpenGL(A computer graphics library) and rob05c answered, in the future I can mention him in OpenGL questions and he'll get an alert, and if I see an OpenGL question that I don't know the answer to, I can refer them to @rob05c then too.

Cultivating communities around niche interests isn't really possible, you can only really cultivate communities around people. That's why I still use reddit(Might switch to voat.co if it gets more popular). Hubski isn't meant to replace Reddit.

caelum19  ·  3283 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Reddit themes

While reddit is stealing Hubski's ideas, could you improve the search feature? :P

caelum19  ·  3422 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hola, Im new here

Welcome! everyone else did a good job introducing you, so I won't say anything that's already been said.

Came here because reddit was blocked at my school...
Hubski isn't really a replacement for reddit, the two are pretty different.

Personally, I prefer Hubski for interactions and opinions but reddit for wasting time, which by the way have you tried using a proxy to access reddit? if your proxy is whitelisted so only google and a handful of other things work you should try using google translate as a proxy

I walk in looking suspiciously tall wearing a large trench coat

I'll have a pint please.

Falls over revealing stilts and fake mustache

Please don't tell my mom.

Anyway, I'm starting to hate python even more but I got texture exporting with a custom blender export script working, now I've just got to actually build something to read them with the engine. Any suggestions for a java library to load .png? I could probably make something myself, given enough time and effort, but I entered my engine in a competition so the more time I have the better(I'm not compromising performance for development time though).

Edit: Think I'm going to make use of http://twl.l33tlabs.org/'s PNG Decoder.

Also, I might make another Khan Academy account because I started all the easy math subjects, so when I do a mastery thingy I get a mixture of algebra and "Which pony is taller?"

caelum19  ·  3366 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How did you find yourself?

Thank you. Can you be more specific about what's wrong with my "method"?

I think you're too aggressive. I can't remember many examples besides the one I linked before, but when you enter a friendly conversation with a 'mini virtual protest' just because meat was mentioned, whether people agree with your opinions on the topic or not they are going to think less of you. Not just Kleinbl00, anyone who sees what you said. When people think less of you, they probably won't have as much of a open mind about what you say in the future plus the less mature will associate with the people who disagree with you based purely on how you interacted with them and defend their opinion before even thinking about it for themselves.

As a vegan how often to do engage in animal rights discussion? What methods do you use? I'm genuinely interested.

I only bring it up when I'm offered food or it becomes extremely relevant, generally when this happens the person(s) I'm speaking with already consider me a friend. Often they will curiously ask why I'm vegan at some point after learning I'm vegan, because they know it will be a friendly conversation and not a flame war. This way they're actually prepared to listen. I tell them what I think and not what I want them to think. I think people react a lot better when you're not telling them how to think. Here is a good example, Complexity Asked you about it and you responded with what you thought. It got a great reaction, you were even token'd. It was also relevant at the time.

You know a while back I said I was feeling unwanted? Yeah well I've been slowly realizing that it's because I AM unwanted. I guess the brain loves to protect it's ego.

Well I'm definitely not going to be lonely my entire life because nobody wants to speak to a <whatever they call someone everybody dislikes> I'm going to start really looking at how I act socially and what can be improved, I've done this before but this time I won't do it on my own. I've already "fixed" everything I would consider negative, but evidently what I consider negative about my social skillset doesn't match that of people I want to be friends with.

As a homeschooled 14 year old, I don't get much opportunity to meet people at all. Everyone I do know is from something I go to once a week with about 40 people, so there's no room at all for screwing up.

But like I said, I've done this before and I spent like 6 months fixing literally everything I could find, this time I will be using resources from http://www.reddit.com/r/DecidingToBeBetter/ and hopefully other people's feedback(Do you think this is a good idea?).

As someone who identifies as a hot dog, this is very very offensive.

Firstly, I'd like to mention how hard it is to get girls to notice me, how they all just walk past me when I try to say hello, how damaging it is when I'm ignored 24/7 when all I'm trying to do is find a friend.

The vertebrate privilege is enormous, you're all just walking around with your bones and muscles and nervous systems completely unaware of how some of us are worse off, I mean, we're not even invited to the foodchain.

And then I hear you complaining about kids, you don't know how well you got it AT LEAST YOU CAN HAVE KIDS All I can do is just sit there and watch as you guys make fun of my inability to mate by referring to male genitals as sausages.

I'm working on a CV(Here a CV is the shorter one) that I was asked to provide for work experience, I'm a bit stuck on the education section. Any tips in general are appreciated :)

http://www.filedropper.com/cvunfinished2 (Make sure you click the right download, the file is a .pdf)

It's for IBM, they've been letting Coderdojo use a whole wing of their Cork establishment every Saturday for the past ~20 weeks and I've been leading classes in HTML, JavaScript, and currently Android, which is what got their attention I guess.

Haha. I guess so a little.

I was going to talk to her about Eminem, but with what my friend said I just awkwardly laughed and walked away...

When she left I told her to "Keep working on that Eminem site Till' you collapse"(She had transformed it into a site just about Eminem by that point), which I am proud of.

caelum19  ·  3366 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How did you find yourself?

By aggressive I mean persistent and forceful, not 'mean' or 'angry' I suppose there was a clearer word I could use. I'm not great with words.

That is great and it's something kind of inevitable, to talk about your lifestyle when it comes up. How often does that happen online? Do you think that a passive attitude is sufficient to stop cruelty?

Online, not very often. I sort of avoided mentioning it because I don't want my first impression to be shaped by my diet or poltical views. Maybe now that I'm a bit more known on Hubski I won't avoid it anymore.

I think a passive attitude is the most effective, since the aim for me is to have a productive conversation, where both people come out happier, smarter and/or maybe one of us will have a different view. I don't think an aggressive attitude will yield any of those, atleast for me it never does.

But what's the option? To just sit back and let discrimination go on unchallenged? We wouldn't do that regarding other types of discrimination

Certainly not to sit back and do nothing, there are lots of other things you can do. Like getting into government, protesting against companies you know act cruely to their animals(Curious, is there a way of getting meat you're okay with?), helping people transition to a vegan diet, coming up with good vegan recipes, maybe entering them in grubski if you're not muted from that(I heard you were posting pictures of baby animals there?). Simply by not buying meat you're promoting the vegan diet.

caelum19  ·  3366 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How did you find yourself?

You find yourself being shouted at, being called an extremist, a hippie, irresponsible, a snob, stupid, retarded, judgemental, a weirdo, and accused of forcing your views on others. Simply because you chose not to harm other beings, you find yourself.
Do you mean that happens as a result of being vegan? I wouldn't say 'simply', I'm vegan and have not once been called any of those things seriously, ever. Clearly there's something else you're doing, probably things like this. I respect you for going to great efforts to make the world a better place, the world needs more of that. But your method is pretty questionable.

The linked post for example, what exactly is that supposed to do? kleinbl00 isn't going to stop eating meat because you showed him a MS paint protester, I doubt anyone would(Maybe you were joking, and I'm just stupid). If anything you're giving veganism a bad name and preventing people from changing to a vegan diet because they don't want to be ridiculed or called a hippie.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks it's not unlikely you're employed by meat companies to eliminate vegans. :P

Uhh... just an orange juice please.

After several failed attempts at making a Twitter AIsh Bot in the past, I have an idea now which seems a lot easier.

Previously I was going to have the emotion and weight of that emotion in every context of every word defined by hand over time, then I realized that I don't have infinite effort shrugs.

Now I have an idea to automate this, I define a few adjectives(Love, hate etc.) and search twitter for "I love x", once I find something which the majority of people love and very few hate(Breaking Bad?), I will search for "I <adjective> Breaking Bad" and now I have a bunch of words/word groups similar to "love"]

If I automate this with a Twitter4J, I can buid a database of words, word groups and profiles of various things. Which will open up doors for more fun.

Just an idea though, I wouldn't be very surprised at all if I run into a million huge problems. Either way I'll have fun and probably learn something.

Anyone here have any experience with this sort of thing?

tear runs down eye

It's.... beautiful.

caelum19  ·  3260 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Emotional Scars of Hubski

I, an ethnic minority woman, cannot be racist or sexist towards white men, because racism and sexism describe structures of privilege based on race and gender.
Nope

In order for our actions to be deemed racist or sexist, the current system would have to be one that enables only people of color and women to benefit economically and socially on such a large scale and to the systematic exclusion of white people and men, who for the past four hundred years would have been subjected to block colonization.

I will agree the majority of racism is directed toward black people, and the majority of sexism to non-men. But she is basically saying because of the 'current system', SHE is unable to be racist or sexist. They are completely unrelated.

    tl;dr shut up white boy
Fighting fire with fire may be effective, but you end up with a lot of burnt down buildings.

It's also pretty mean and narrow minded, I was expecting much better on Hubski.

I'm writing a JavaScript tutorial for that Coderdojo thing I mentioned. Last 3 weeks I have been 'teaching' there, all were CSS. The plan is to use JavaScript as a bridge to get them into the less boring parts of programming, C etc. There are a good few Minecraft players there so Java might be better. This 'tutorial' wil be on a projector while I explain how it works, and for people that come in 30 minutes late will be handed a printed version so they don't hold everyone up.

Problem is, everyone there is either a good bit younger(9-12) or a good bit older than me. All of my friends are in another building literally accross the road at exactly the same time, so it's pretty lonely.

Project wise, still working on that engine. I'm making a abstract model loading thingy where it uses Reflection to read a text file with a bunch of method calls in it, so I should be able to make complex model formats really easily.

Welcome to Hubski, Myles! Have you checked out the primer? It's quite helpful.

I don't read very often and I don't have anything to say on the book side of this apart from that I think it's a good idea, I came to welcome you to Hubski. :)

Also, I noticed you posted this 3 times to different tags. This means 3 items added to global and to anyone following you on their feed. I'm certain nobody was bothered but in the future just one post should do, If I'm correct you can post something to 2 tags at once by using the community tag field when posting, and once you've earned your first token you can add a community tag to other posts by clicking the '+#' button to the right of the tag next to the title(You might be able to do this to your own posts before you get a token, I'm not sure).

There is a list of tags ordered by the amount following them (by default) here

Thank you very much! this is really good advise. Don't worry about me taking it the wrong way, you obviously have good intentions and good advise, nothing else matters :)

I feel it's necessary to clarify that this is "Work experience", which here in Ireland is unpaid work young people(I'm 15) do before they get a job. Most people wouldn't put in this much effort, but I am because it will definitely be helpful when I apply for more a permanent jobs(As will your advise. Again, thank you.)

Recent Projects

I don't love using lines of code here, do you have more braggy metrics you can use? (...)

Unfortunately not. Dates are a great idea, without a better metric, would you say it's worth keeping lines? Also do you think adding dates will make the hours spent redundant?

In the summary for ragnarok "provide high and low levels tools for game development with low limitations" is a little odd wording (...)

Good point. What I was getting at was that the goal is to provide fine and coarse control, which actually sounds like a good way to describe it.

How does "Currently creating an open-source, multiplayer-oriented game engine with the goal to provide both fine and coarse control over game development." sound?

Also, "extensive help documentation. " manically laughing, I really need to get round to writing documentation. It's difficult to bother when you're the only one working on a project.

    - Anything else you can sell about Gazpacho? Why is it different, is it better then other pomodoro timers? Ect

It's pretty new right now, most of what make it different are planned features(I take it they won't care about planned features?) However, I did add "Reward system with separate scoring topics" as a bullet point under a "Current features"

Technical Proficiencies

Anything relevant from computer hardware you can move up here?

I built my desktop, which I don't think is that impressive, so I don't plan on wording it as a big deal(Is that a good idea?)

Education

Can you make the home education bullet a little more formal? Do you have a GED? (...)

We don't use GEDs here, but we have a similar "Junior Cerificate" and "Leaving Certificate". The latter is more important, but people doing work experience wouldn't have finished it yet, so they would use the Junior Cert. I have not sat the Junor certificate as it is not nessaceary for college(If I want to go to college), and I also have not won any significant awards. That's why I'm having difficulty with this bit, would it be suspicious to not have an education section at all?

Experience

"Volunteer mentor" doesnt sound quite right, sounds like you're a teacher? If that's accurate I'd use it instead, mentor has a less formal label

That's true, but we're actually referred to strictly as 'mentors' to keep it informal, much more fun that way. For the purpose of a CV, Mentor should serve okay, right?

Coderdojo is very informal, you just show up at any class with a computer, say 'hi' and you will be shown what to do. As a mentor, sometimes I wish it were more formal when people show up 30 mins late, and I'm half way through my material. But it makes up for it with all the fun bits of being informal.

/rant, I won't have student attrition stats on anything like that. I have prepared material, but only 10 5-7 page PDFs, would you say it's worth it?

Interests Wikipedia seems a little odd for the space bullet, I would drop that one personally

Didn't think about that. How does "Airsoft, Cycling, Computer Hardware, Competitive games(C&C, CS:GO), Space,

Creative outlets(Programming, Sandbox games, Image editing)" sound?

caelum19  ·  3122 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Yesterday Global, Today Global Chatter. What can we as users do about the spam?

On reddit, if you don't have enough Karma, you need to complete a reCaptcha to comment/post.

Would something similar be possible here? I doubt people are willing to put much effort into spamming Hubski, so you probably wouldn't need a very hard human verification. I imagine messages like "What is 7 plus the amount of seconds in a minute?" would be easy to generate and easy to answer.

caelum19  ·  3228 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Which job path would you recommend me to get, hubski?

Programming. Like writing, you can create whatever you want from scratch, there are thousands of ways to do what you want to do, imagination and creativeity are very helpful. And if you spend a lot of time on something in programming, chances are it will get used because a good program can be identified instantly.

It's high-pay, high-demmand and low supply.

It costs nothing but a computer and a internet connection to get into.

Also, you mentioned writing, programming and writing go well together if you're making a game. In fact, Programming goes well with pretty much any form of media you feel like being creative with
