Our TV reporters are like

touches earpiece

"... I'm being told that somebody, somewhere, is saying the words.."

glances down at the page in front of them

  SECOND NAKBA

looks back up at the camera

"... well, it's.. it's certainly some words, words that describe how they're feeling, which is likely quite bad at this moment. And now we're going to get back to clips of U.S. officials parroting the IDF. Thank you."

I read the chat with 'bl00 and spence, and I think my cynical takeaway is that once a country can make nuclear weapons, they can do almost whatever they want to any non-nuclear regional powers, using the threat of proliferation.

It's pretty sad that we'll just let Israel be expansionist, even if it takes a genocide to hasten in their perceived manifest destiny. We didn't ever really admonish Israel for their political oppression of Palestinians, but it's nice to know that a rapid, violent military op is also fine. U.S. foreign policy is moreso about an attempt to justify ongoing atrocities in the name of possible future atrocity prevention, sounds like. It reminds me of effective altruism, honestly.

Watching all this while my country uses the UN to shield Israel from accountability? Fucking sucks. My heart goes out to Palestine. But all of the tankies supporting Palestine who also fetishize Russia are a fucking joke, at least everyone can agree on that. It'd be hard for me not to wanna police them out of the pro-Palestine camp in America. And the camp is small. Very small.

am_Unition  ·  237 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: These moments totally happened at the GOP primary debate

A great example of conspiracy theories being disqualifying for dems is how nobody took Marianne Williamson seriously once all the "healing crystals" stuff hit the fan. And afaik, that was the only conspiracy-adjacent thing she espoused.

For the republican party, believing in conspiracy is a requirement. The crazier, the better. I had to look up RFK's policies, because he never talks about them. They're relatively democrat-centrist, from what I can find. Some even sound progressive. But all he talks about are conspiracies. THAT is republican. And so is being "anti-war" while also advocating to bomb and/or invade Mexico. I'd love to hear RFK Jr. be asked that question.

I can add legit source links to this thread all day. We can't just watch the candidates lie to us in debates or interviews and trust everyone on the basis of how charismatic they are.

38 unpaid vacations.

This is beyond absurd.

In Wyoming, the Thomases fished, rafted on the Snake River and sat by a campfire overlooking the Teton Range with the other couples. At one point, the Paolettas serenaded the justice with a song they wrote about him.

hhahahahha! Do you think Clarence was like "Yeahhhhh, this is all fine. I've earned this."? Because I do, I think he probably believes that. The Citizens United ruling makes so much more sense.

And I imagine this is going on to some extent for the other justices. Well, I mean, we know it is.

That wascally waptor

"How could regulators have allowed this" is now the funniest thing I've ever seen from WSJ.

It gets even better as the article goes on, actually, like an entire 180 on the free-est market advocacy stances held only days prior.

Trump's pretty off-the-rails. Too uncoordinated and crazy to put together anything this sophisticated. And J6 was nothing, also. Can't wait to vote for him again.

am_Unition  ·  655 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Quantum entanglement of two ATOMS (not photons) over 20 mile distance

But... we know what quantum entanglement is. Quantum entanglement is quantum entanglement. We have the mathematics that allow us to describe the relatively complex system of two entangled atoms, and we have obviously designed an experimental setup and procedure that allows us to do it.

You're interested in exploring what entanglement means, and I think that is a fool's errand. I used to not understand why physicists defaulted to the Copenhagen interpretation and moved on with their lives, instead of exploring the metaphysical ramifications of quantum mechanics. Now I'm similarly agnostic about metaphysics because I think it's simply unknowable. It's like asking "Why is the universe the way the universe is?". All we can do for certain is accept that we have a relatively good understanding of how the physical universe works, use the maths to make good predictions and improve our technologies, and entertain the possibility that the answers to some of life's biggest questions are forever left for user interpretation, no matter how technologically advanced we become.

Wanna really cook your noodle? Let's say that the big bang is factual, and that all of the universe's energy was thus concentrated at a single point, at a single moment. Well, then all of the resulting forms matter and energy was initially entangled. We have no idea how to handle that idea with physics and math, which begin to break down / have inconsistencies in the era of hyperinflation, 1 x 10⁻³⁶ (lol what is that unicode??) seconds after the singularity. Of course, the universe immediately began to interact with itself, which causes decoherence, and related things like increasing entropy, which we associate with the direction of increasing time. So I guess you could literally make the argument "iT's aLL cOnNeCtEd MaAaAaAAaNn" with our current understanding of physics.

BTW, I think the one-way flow of time is possibly a condition imposed on consciousness, i.e. large, coherent systems of interacting energy and matter (neural activity, in our case). Whether an anti-person living in a possible anti-matter sector of the universe would experience time flowing backwards or decreasing entropy relative to our "forward moving" perspective is unknown, I think. But there are certainly rules, in this universe. No idea why. Or how. And we don't know where the anti-matter in the universe is, of course, there should be just as much as regular matter, and we can't find it.

Tagging Devac, totally absolutely just for the unicode oddity, he hates physics (plz correct me if I'm mistaken).

edit: the unicode is fine on my phone but funky in my browser. cool

am_Unition  ·  699 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: This kills the republican party

You didn't ask for this. I'm sorry. Ukraine is so fucking far from over, but it's a related set of omelettes, b/c fascism.

To publicly de-fang two arguments I've very recently heard from two very different people:

1) "Military service is slavery!"

No, it's not. Military service, in this day and age in America, is a voluntary contract between an individual and the federal state. Slavery, by definition, is essentially entirely involuntary (fuck off w/ "indentured servitude" shit arguments). Military service is individually consensual.

2) "Mandatory public service would be slavery!"

No, it's not. Ideally, any mandatory public service (like, what, 1 year? 2 years?) would be the result of a majority of citizens agreeing to institute the policy upon themselves, their children, etc. etc. Although the agreement is made above the level of the individual, the collective has spoken in their belief of acting in the best interest of the collective. Public service would be collectively consensual.

If you can't understand how belittling either of those arguments comes across to the all-too-typically-economically-disenfranchised descendants of slaves, that's funny! That's hilarious, to me. Like "making jokes about children getting shot" levels of humor. Which I have totally done, even on this website recently! We have so much in common. Let's destroy society together.

am_Unition  ·  699 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: This kills the republican party

I'm worried that's an idea delusional enough to catch on, lol.

But honestly, I think there would be a lot of benefit to some sort of national service work requirement. Perhaps bundled with college tuition or something. After all, many Americans are first exposed to other races and cultures for the first time in the military. If we could take the "we're all here to kill people" and replace it with "we're all here to help people"? Yes, please.

I know there's no chance in hell something like non-warfare national service gets instituted anytime in the near future. It'd be slandered as "total communism", and there'd be almost a kernel of truth to the accusation, for once.

am_Unition  ·  699 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: This kills the republican party

The GOP, RNC, or whoever, know this already, on top of rural covid death rates being especially bad after the 2020 election.

Instead of appealing to moderates or de-extremizing or having any policy platform whatsoever (almost: see below) besides cultural warfare, the radicalization continues.

The only explanation is that the GOP is banking on unfair elections. And indeed, "legally" engineering such is arguably the most coherent nationwide GOP policy goal.

I wish I shared your optimism, but I think the republican party is about to terminate the American experiment rather than change their ways.

am_Unition  ·  786 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: A letter to the Western Left from Kyiv

This is pretty much exactly where I'm at.

I wish the author would have noted how small a sliver of the "Western Left" resides in America. The mainstream political "Left" of America is "Western Center". Probably almost every single person reading this here on the 'ski knows that, but yeah, there are only about 100k members of the Democratic Socialists of America.

As someone close to or inside 'democratic socialist' on the ideological spectrum, but certainly not card carrying; Yoikes. The DSA press release has aged very poorly. The small numbers of self-proclaimed democratic socialists are very passionate about organizing to effect political change, but if the organizations react with entrenched, party-line groupthink, I'm not interested.

Criticizing NATO and the U.S. is fine, even patriotic, and we should never forget how stupid and tragic the U.S.'s middle east meddling was. But if you react in one way, and one way only, to evolving geopolitical power struggles, you don't deserve a platform. Learn2nuance.

This time, the establishment democrats got it right, more or less. That said, we would be wise not to let Cold War II minimize the domestic threat we're facing. Really, they're the same threat; autocratic oppression.

THE FORMALIZATION OF DUNKING ON SpinLaunch

---

The Dribble

kleinbl00: I'm now convinced the main chamber was indeed at partial pressure. Maybe like half an atmosphere or so. In the Clint Mansell soundtrack promotional vid, at 0:46 I can see some of the membrane get sucked back into the chamber faster than gravity alone would pull it downwards, but not fast enough to indicate a near-totally evacuated chamber. Any whooshing and whizzing audio was probably synthesized and added in post, I'm increasingly sure.

Right, so I just did some high school math regarding a maximum apogee of "tens of thousands of feet" for a ballistic shot vertically. The upper limit, 100,000 ft., requires a release velocity of a little less than 800 m/s. Escape velocity in the absence of any atmosphere is ~11,000 m/s, so you'll need to go ehhhhhhhhh a little faster. However; good news, some of the requisite velocity is offset by the plan to put something resembling a rocket engine and its fuel up to 10k g's before lighting the fuse before the payload can fall back to Earth.

Did you notice the verbiage used in the press release? Launched at "20% of the centrifuge's maximum power"? This is not really a system well-defined by its power consumption. It’s a question of release velocity and how much payload is second-stage rocket and fuel. I bet it takes a lot of power to spin anything up to a high speed in an almost-not-vacuum.

v^2/r says that if you scale up the centrifuge by a factor of three,

---

Juke

    10k g's

    ten thousand times one “jee"

    10,000*9.8m/s^2 of static centripetal acceleration

Hopefully, for attitude control, the release is exactly instantaneous across the entire length of the payload

Hopefully, to avoid a disastrously high jerk response of the payload components, the release interval (Δt) is as large as possible

Uh-oh

---

C'mon n' Slam if You Wanna Jam

The establishment rocket launch environment is pretty well-characterized. NASA has specific requirements for each launch vehicle, which are passed on to contractors. For example, mechanical engineers are given a set of vibration table testing requirements. There is no static loading requirement, only a sine sweep test to confirm and zero-in on the resonances predicted from modeling, and then a random noise test.

Based on the 2,000-kg weight limit, the mass of "payload" dedicated to shielding the actual payload from introduction to a near-instantaneous shock, or damping the actual payload response from the “jerk” may be, like, almost all of the "payload".

The secrets behind the stability of a missile going Mach whatever with a bomb inside of it are:

1) A gradual acceleration inside a gradually changing fluid environment (lessening atmospheric density as it goes up).

2) The direction of the axis of symmetry (where the nosecone points) is almost exactly parallel to the velocity vector, and any stabilizing spin is confined along this axis, the axis of the lowest rotational moment of inertia.

3) Everything.; Everything, including the bomb and all associated electronics inside the missile, was designed with the environment in mind.

We can see for ourselves in these videos that 1) & 2) failed. For 3), I doubt that anyone who's ever made any comms, optical, EM-fields, or particle sensing instrumentation (or even spacecraft buses, whatever) could honestly tell you they could pull 10k g's static load with anything remotely similar to their current mechanical design. Solid-propellant rocket fuel? Good luck, ya got a lotta free energy floating around, hopefully it doesn’t localize into anything sparkable.

The Rebound

But, OK. We might should think about payload design with a ~100 g static load (just, like, for starters) and a way wilder dynamic environment, primarily based on the shock. As Devac points out, there are potentially more realistic future applications of spin-launching in other environments, like on the moon. The entire concept isn't stupid, but SpinLaunch currently looks to me like either an intentional misrepresentation of the facts to investors or a very deep ignorance. Or a bit of both. Just my opinion.

am_Unition  ·  934 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: This model forecast the US's current unrest a decade ago. It now says 'civil war'

Personally, I doubt we've reached peak disorder.

The Jan. 6th insurrection attempt wasn't a one-day event, it is ongoing. Trust in our electoral system is actively being undermined by the GOP, who are free to lie with impunity about non-existent voter fraud while they simultaneously devise technically legal ways to guarantee themselves a much higher likelihood of "winning" the next presidential election, should they be unable to clinch the electoral college votes. The radicalization of the GOP permitting this is also ongoing.

Fundamentally, though, just about the entire world is reconsidering the relationship between society and government. I think the rate of technological advance has outpaced our ability to effectively address the complexities of modern life through policy. Tech-based disruption has been used by the wealthy and autocratic to further increase the wealth gap and undermine the entire concept of what a government should be and do. And they're not done. Unfettered greed knows no bounds.

There is an ongoing debate as to whether Tall el-Hammam could be the biblical city of Sodom (Silvia2 and references therein), but this issue is beyond the scope of this investigation. Questions about the potential existence, age, and location of Sodom are not directly related to the fundamental question addressed in this investigation as to what processes produced high-temperature materials at Tall el-Hammam during the MBA. Nevertheless, we consider whether oral traditions about the destruction of this urban city by a cosmic object might be the source of the written version of Sodom in Genesis. We also consider whether the details recounted in Genesis are a reasonable match for the known details of a cosmic impact event.

My mind immediately went to the Old Testament. Yeah, I mean, if you don't know about space n' shit, maybe you're out to pasture, shepherding whatever around, and are then possibly blinded while being terribly burned, running to get behind a boulder, but then the shockwave arrives, throwing you off your feet and at least partially deafening you... we might name anal sex after your destroyed city, and say "oh well they deserved it, god was angry at them for all the butt stuff"? What a deal.

Still a few rocks out there:

I have a very long, probably 4 part rant on OWS, what I saw inside and OWS cap out in Flyover Country, how we set up a jobs program that was then cannibalized by the Ohio Democratic Party and then shelved, how we tried to quietly raise money to buy medical debt after the regrouping...

I'd read it, and you write just fine. Don't worry about that.

Ten years ago, I was much more inward-focused. I knew about and supported OWS, albeit not nearly as passionately as I would today. Between a globe-trotting sister and a large number of foreign colleagues, it's overly clear to me now that the American political spectrum is skewed wayyyyyyy rightwards vs. almost every other western country. I have trouble imparting this on the average American without them suspecting my perception is so jaded by progressivism as to be 100% incorrect. Can't point to academic studies comparing international flavors of politics without "confirming" my "liberal bias" to them. Most are completely disinterested anyways.

Yes, the American political system is in the process of failing spectacularly. My best days are the ones when I manage to not give a shit, but that's a luxury I probably won't be able to afford for longer than another year or two.

Allegedly a factor of about 1,000 viral load increase with the delta variant vs. the earlier variants.

Let us hope that the above is a flawed study? I've waited a few days to hopefully not have to post this info, only to find it today recapped on Nature :(.

Let us also hope that there is not enough available mutation space for the virus to simultaneously-ish converge on the most favorable (FOR THE VIRUS) levels of transmissibility, vaccine evasion, and quick replication timescales. Remember last year, when virologists were like "Hold on, those things are all considered somewhat antithetical."? Man, those were the days.

I don't know exactly what to think. I know I am relatively safe with my 2x Moderna shots right now, but does this eventually progress to people first contracting and coughing out a fucking kilo of covid particles that evade all vaccine defenses, all within the span of only a few hours? I still think the answer is "No, probably."

It's like a zombie movie where the zombies are just normal people coughing and they're like "Hey buddy! I'm not pale at all, but still, I don't feel so well, cough and whew c'mere, hold me, oh, OH I BIT YOU WITH MY BREATH AND YOU'RE DEAD SOON TOO!!!". It's way worse than an actual zombie movie, because you still feel sorry for the not-pale/still-human dead.

I am going on a cruise soon. Hmm.

Update: it's now subsonic, has shed its heat shield, only 9.5 km altitude.

UPDATE: SUCCESS!!!

(I'm gonna keep new Trumpshit consolidated here for now) but most or all Trump's impeachment defense team just quit.

Reportedly, Trump wanted to use the Senate trial to continue amplifying his claim that the election was stolen.

Classic Trump: When on trial for incitement of violence based on election fraud lies, double down and incite more insurrection.

Now that the GOP Senators have signaled their intent to acquit via declaring post-office impeachments "unconstitutional" (spoiler: they ain't), Trump is now free to target his radical base once again with fact-free messaging.

Case in point: Trump called Majorie dumbfuck-Greene yesterday to tell her he supports what she is doing. Which, to clarify, is lying about anything important, encouraging violence, and propagating racist bullshit.

This is far from over, guys. Any attempts at legally holding these people to account will be used to radicalize their voting base.

What do we do? I recently thought we could lampoon them with comedy, but they don't understand comedy. Urging unity with fascists and fascist enablers? They watched their potential "come to god" moment go flying by, and showed no interest. So uhhhh no thanks.

It has to be a mass grassroots targeting of Trump's voting base, because the leaders are beyond hopeless. How do we do it??

Nonviolent approaches only.
