Outset  ·  2878 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Swiss vote against Basic Income 77% – 22%

Economically speaking, we're years too far behind to start introducing universal basic incomes. As an idea, it simply wouldn't work from an economic standpoint unless we were to drastically reduce the cost of living first.

Jobseeker's Allowance for example is £57.90 per week or £3,010.80 per year, and is already something that the British government have aimed to cut immensely, despite Jobseekers Allowance costing the Department of Work and Pensions £3.065 billion during the 2014/15 financial year, and that figure is based on about 750,000 welfare claimants who may or may not necessarily be claiming JSA.

Now, imagine paying the equivalent of a full time worker [being paid the current UK living wage of £8.25 (which is a voluntary wage set by the Living Wage Foundation based on the cost of living in the UK, and is not to be confused with the legally enforced National Living Wage of £7.20, which is the government's attempt to rebrand the National Minimum Wage for 25+ workers.)](http://www.livingwage.org.uk/news/new-uk-living-wage-rate-has-been-announced).

A worker being paid £8.25 per hour for 52 weeks is then earning £16,087.50 a year. Now imagine all 64.1 million (according to World Bank statistics circa 2013) being paid this wage unconditionally. It would cost the country: £1,031,208,750,000.00.

Good fucking luck financing a universal basic income.

Maybe Snapzu could take a few as well?

It was picked up by a link archive website prior to the AMA's deletion, which was linked in the description. The AMA itself was deleted very quickly, likely due to pressure from Reddit employees, legal reasons, or Chairman Pao herself.

Voat.co is a dodgy reddit clone. I have seen illegal content hosted on there.

Outset  ·  3232 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What do you think would be the perfect prison system?

I'm veering more towards the side of retribution for serious offences (i.e. brutal murders, brutal rapes, paedophilia). But I do support a more rehabilitation-based prison system for lesser offences.

Meanwhile subreddits like /r/CoonTown and /r/AgainstMensRights are still allowed to go along unharmed.

It's too bad I'm not American, not a fan of handegg, not really a fan of sports in general, and not someone really capable of following the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But I wish you good luck.

Pop-rock. But I'll admit I have an appreciation for 5 Seconds of Summer

Haven't Spotify done Premium-exclusive tracks before, or at least timed exclusivity?

Outset  ·  3238 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why I left Reddit

I'm not a fan of Chairman Pao, and for very good reason.

Why did /r/FatPeopleHate deserve the chopping block when there are many other larger subreddits that not only breed hatred but also harass other users?

Also, the fact a lot of them are radical feminist subs indicates a feminist agenda with the site.

I'd like to see Spotify, Tidal, Google and Apple form their own record labels to sign their own service-exclusive talent and offset the licensing costs imposed upon them by the big four labels.

Outset  ·  3238 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Do you use your powers for good or evil?

I work as a customer support representative for a large outsourcing company.

A few months ago, I would have said good, because I genuinely sympathise with the plight of customers. But months of being rudely mauled apart by customers has made me bitter towards my current job and want out. Now I'd say I use my powers for myself.

Outset  ·  3238 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, what are your favorite free online games?

I used to like Fantasy Online and it felt like a really fleshed-out 2D top-down MMORPG. However, the game wasn't profitable and it quickly got shut down, which is an absolute shame.

Runescape is also really good, regardless of whether you choose to play the current game or play Old School Runescape (the version from back in 2007, with minor changes and content patches).

Outset  ·  3238 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: PSA: Welcome to Hubski, Redditors.

Hubski is like a mix between Reddit and Twitter. Instead of default subreddits, you get the option to follow tags. For example, #gaming is the gaming tag, and #reddit is the reddit tag. To link a tag in a post, simply surround a word with hashes (#).

When creating a post, you can assign it to up to two tags at a time and the community can choose to assign a third tag to the post; although those were the rules when I first signed up and this may have changed since.

Unlike Reddit though, there is no moderation on tags unlike there is with subreddits, no such thing as downvoting (so no brigading here), and the experience is far more tailored to the user.

Two rules which are shared with Reddit and Hubski are no doxxing and no sexualised content of minors, so don't expect to see jailbait here...

Seeing the admins of Reddit get thousands of downvotes for stating their views on the subject pleases me greatly. I almost want to fap to all the drama that's going on.

I hope Reddit dies a very painful death, and I feel like the admins are one step away from triggering a Digg v4 level exodus.

Outset  ·  3292 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Let Prisoners Take College Courses

We need to focus far more on "prison as rehabilitation" rather than "prison as retribution", especially when it comes to how often people re-offend when the justice system is focused far more on retribution.

Committing felonies generally means that any company which performs background checks will not hire you. This will reduce your employment and career opportunities considerably. And when you can't provide for yourself? Your only option is to turn back to crime!

Outset  ·  3292 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Apple Watch isn't for you. It's for China.

If anyone has a good idea for wearable tech, it's Google.

The big prohibiting factor of Google Glass is the fact that it cost $1,500 to purchase a pair and they looked quite goofy in their prototype stage. Drop the price considerably and I think you'd have a hit.

Outset  ·  3293 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, What are you working on right now?

I agree with the idea of going anywhere other than home to free yourself of any distractions. However, my shifts are all over the place and I often finish work at times when coffee shops and most fast food joints are closed. Although they are standard 7.5 hour shifts with an hour long break, the hours I start/finish can vary greatly week to week.

Is there a way to code on an iPad or a cheap Android tablet?

I haven't used my laptop in a while, and I wouldn't exactly trust myself to bring it to the workplace lest it gets stolen. At least with a tablet I could keep it in a bag small enough to fit in my locker while I'm at work. I can't have my bag with me at my desk in the workplace because data protection policies, and the only other place to store it is in a shared cupboard where it might get stolen.

Outset  ·  3293 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, What are you working on right now?

I'm trying to learn how to program so that I can one day move into a better career.

The problem is, I don't have enough time, energy or willpower to really commit my mind to anything because my full time, dead-end call centre job is sapping everything from me in frequent bursts. On most days when I've arrived home from work, I've been exhausted and fallen asleep shortly after arriving home.

Then there's lots of other things making me feel like shit and demotivating me hugely, such as my very unsuccessful love life, where I feel like I should give up on dating and ever having any attraction or feelings towards anyone; or the fact that everything else takes up my schedule.

Overall, I just feel demotivated, lethargic and tired all the time.

Outset  ·  3309 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What is the Dark and How Do We Push It Back?

It's kept ambiguous to allow the user to form their own interpretation of what the dark is.

My interpretation? The dark is the cancer and toxicity which has killed other online communities.

Outset  ·  3309 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What do you think of this Button then?

I wonder if it's similar to Curiosity.

The last user to click the button wins, Ellen Pao appears and (in the style of Peter Molyneux) makes a very pretentious video where she over-promises and declares that the winner will become the 'God of Reddit' for 6 months and get 1% of the site's profits.

Outset  ·  3329 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Where was your first kiss?

At a house party. The girl I made out with was someone I had a huge crush on, but who was 'on a break' with my best friend at the time.

She turned out to be a really horrible person the more I got to know her. Eventually, it got to the point where she'd be flirting (heavily) with me one minute, and then calling me a stalker and telling me to go kill myself the next. She and her friends also started to bully me rather badly in school and when I reported everything that happened to my teacher, they simply got off with a rather informal warning.

After a couple of years, she actually added me again on Facebook. I still accepted her friend request because maybe she was willing to apologise to me, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I think we spoke once or twice since. Half of me actually wanted to confront her about it there and then.

The Guardian and feminism go hand-in-hand, it seems, and it does annoy its readers at times.

Look at how badly their article proposing an 'eco-feminist Top Gear' went down, especially on Facebook; all because the Guardian forgot that people watched Top Gear because it's an entertainment show and not because they are car enthusiasts.

Yup, that's like the icing on the shit-cake there.

I wholeheartedly agree.

They didn't ban /r/Jailbait or sexualised content of minors until Anderson Cooper's exposé on the subreddit, or until SomethingAwful and /r/ShitRedditSays threatened a press mail-bombing/defamation campaign towards Reddit. And of course they didn't ban /r/CreepShots until SRS and SA actually instigated said mail-bombing campaign (Project PANDA).

On top of this, the admins didn't ban /r/Niggers until the media shone a light on how sick and depraved that subreddit was for its derogatory views towards blacks, and even then they did it under the guise of 'vote manipulation'; a crime which a lot of the SJW subreddits (SRS and MensRights in particular) should have been banned for already...

While it's a conspiracy theory at the moment, I genuinely think SRS had something to do with the doxxing of Violentacrez (and other /r/Creepshots mods) by Gawker last year.

I really don't get the appeal of visiting North Korea as a tourist. If I were a wealthy businessman living in China, Pyongyang would be the last place I want to visit.
