The more I see / hear of this guy, the more I become a fan. I've never seen any of his movies though.

I personally believe that a celebrity-led movement would not be in the best interest for anyone (as a surface thought); yet at the same time, it may be the most practical and effective solution considering the world that we have set up for ourselves.

Leshik  ·  3822 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Meet “badBIOS,” the mysterious Mac and PC malware that jumps airgaps

Very interesting, and this is pretty damn scary if it's real. I'm pretty skeptical on this being real though. It sounds like a horror story for Halloween.

If an infected machine is disconnected from the network, and the speakers removed... how is this going to even possibly transmit? This is some sci-fi stuff right here. Viral transmission via audio is crazy, and I'd LOVE to see anything transmit strictly through audio wave signal alone. The implications behind figuring out how to do that could greatly surpass any of the negative implications behind badBIOS itself. Essentially if this is at all real, the implications would indicate I could construct and then transmit a specific frequency from my smartphone to any machine with a built in microphone on a network and pentest the hell out of that given network. If anything, it's potentially being surface disguised as audio transmission and in reality being transmitted via a wifi signal. A desktop with wired ethernet only, and no speakers should have absolutely no way to transmit anything so long as it has been disconnected from a network.

Either way, if you're not already following @dragosr you probably should if you're in the IT world.

Insane? Seems par for the course for this bunch. I expect them to try to screw over the middle and working class as much as they possibly can.

Hopefully it doesn't pass the Senate; I don't think it will.

I drank the last glass of the whiskey at dinner... so now I'm stuck with water. The liquor stores have closed and I don't want to drink beer.

meh... I found everything on facebook incredibly mundane and repetitive, and so I got rid of it a few years ago (some time around late 2009 or early 2010). I also was starting to have some privacy concerns, and I think I was pretty far ahead of the curve on that.

My facebook experience prior to shutting it off though was similar to:

Oh, you had a baby, here's a picture of the kid, now the kid has cake on his face...

Oh this other person had a baby, here's a picture of that kid... she has cake on her face too...

Oh, you want to tell me how I should vote... thanks, I sincerely appreciate your insight! :/

Oh, you're eating a sandwich, cool...

It's Saturday... Go Gators, UCF, Miami, USF, and FSU... bleh

I enjoy talking with people on hubski / reddit significantly more; although reddit has been declining for a while now too... which prompted me to find Hubski :D

Leshik  ·  3828 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Undead Teddy Ruxpin and Elmo: Thrift Shop

This is fucking awesome.

I don't think this is implying to flat out "stay off the web." I gathered "stay off of social media, and otherwise (non-intelligent) mediums," which is something I can get behind.

Hubski seems to have some relatively intelligent banter on here in my brief experience on the site.

Woah... I never expected to see Mario in a catsuit; and if someone would have told me "Mario will be in a catsuit" this is not what I expected.

Multiple Marios would give me an identity crisis I think.

It seems pretty cool that you can be multiple characters at the same time, and that you don't necessarily need 4 human players to have them all active concurrently.

I also like that they seem to have brought back the finish line flag.

This would be interesting with the influence of psybocillin.

I'm somewhat familiar with Marxist theory. I'm a fan of quite a bit of it. Not EVERYTHING, but I like quite a bit.

I think a lot of people have been looking for a modern, credible, academic source... that's what I meant in all honesty.

I'm a self-described Anarcho-Syndicalist / Libertarian Socialist for the most part, however and to my uncomfortable detriment, I've noticed that I often have issues getting along with other self described Anarcho-Syndicalists. It's incredibly stupid, and I cannot explain it. I'm a black sheep in a sense.

I am not currently familiar with your link, so I will certainly check it out. Thanks!

Leshik  ·  3829 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Messy Link Between Slaveowners and Modern Management

Well ::dusts off hands:: I feel a slight bit vindicated. Finally, someone with substantially more credibility than me is saying what I've been saying for a few years now.

Leshik  ·  3829 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Messy Link Between Slaveowners and Modern Management

I'm not sure that it's meant to imply that they got their tactics from slave owners; I think it's intended to demonstrate the comparisons between current, and 200 year old business intelligence / reports / and what we today call analytics. One could fairly reasonably see the correlation.

WHAT!?!?!?!?

CA Tax dollars paid for an attorney for this guy, AND THEN he is awarded $38k for STRESS!?!!?!?

From the article: "According to the Enterprise, Pike was making $121,680 annually when he was fired from the department. "

WHAT!?!?!????????????????????????????????????????

...shoot... Can I sign up to be campus security? You can give me the same salary, and I won't pepper spray people? Think of all of the money they'd save!

If someone turns in a blank ballot in the USA, they may as well have not turned in anything at all. It's the same as not showing up; it doesn't get counted.

You can write in candidates though.

Leshik  ·  3830 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ask Hubski: What is the perfect cocktail for multiple occasions?

Crown Royal and very cheap knock off coke... not sure why, but I like the flavor of the grocery store brands better. I like what Run_Train 1 stated, for obvious reasons... but felt compelled to be more specific.

That, or... Glenlivet 18, neat.

I don't understand the concept of drinks appealing to a certain gender.

Leshik  ·  3830 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Losing the Flame of Rebellion

I was introduced to some pretty awesome political and social ideologies at a relatively young age; though music. Admittedly... it was political punk rock that did it for me, but it got me involved enough to want to major in Political Science and then go in to law. I've always had the perspective that one would have to REALLY understand the system in order to begin to break it down.

I got a Poli-Sci degree, but I never went to law school (that was an entirely separate and ridiculous story of it's own involving a dog parade with marching band outside of the LSAT testing center) and opted to tour as a guy in a political punk band instead for a few years. What better way to spread my leftist ideals than indoctrination of youth? (I say that with both sarcasm and with a serious tone) Eventually I ended up getting into progressive metal (punk music was relatively easy/ boring to play). After a while, once I was completely worn out with being dirt poor... I stopped playing music. Perhaps I wasn't very good at what I was doing, or perhaps our system seems to have a way of filtering out people like me (record labels, radio time, licensing deals, merchandizing, etc - things I wanted nothing to do with) - and I had to make a choice. I can either continue what I'm doing, continue to be physically unhealthy, continue to lack a significant other in my life, continue to not really have a place to live, continue to have no money and continue to question "what the fuck am I doing this for?" OR I could buy in to the system, just a bit... just enough to sustain myself with; and then once I have the necessities down... try again. The thing is, I am one stubborn son-of-a-bitch.

I'm working on getting all of the necessities down to the point where I am able to generate income with minimal investment of my personal time. I've been re-educating myself in a different field (IT) that I can do remotely.

The flame doesn't "die" in everyone... sometimes it just gets cold before it erupts.

I don't mean to come off as sounding combative; but it's really none of my business if they want to increase the threshold by $10.

Leshik  ·  3831 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The World Wants to Break Up with America's Internet

That's a completely valid concern, especially for citizens that are not of the U.S.

I wonder... lets go on the hypothetical that Australia has an awesome and efficient "Big Brother" network, and I was continually breaking one of their laws, but not a U.S. law. Would that even matter if I were a U.S. citizen?

Cool device, but it's basically 10X the cost of a Raspberry Pi.

I'd imagine having a necessity for multiple docks as well, which I'd assume is going to dramatically increase the overall price.

Still cool none the less.

Can confirm... I met it there about 7 years ago; was out on a boat all alone at night. Giant crustacean came out of the water. Scary as hell, giant yellow eyes and looked at me. I asked it, "What do you want from me monster?!" Said it needed about Three fiddy.

Leshik  ·  3837 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Clock

It's none of my business, but I'm of the mindset that you should go out and enjoy your life to the fullest regardless if you know when you're going to die or not.

Your life is already yours to own. Use that thing. Make sure you don't stop living in order to stay alive (and that last piece was lyrical theft; credit belongs to The Offspring).

Leshik  ·  3837 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What music brings out your primal side?

Well... it's pretty aggressive, and there is quite a bit of metal screaming... and that's explicitly what you're saying it doesn't have to be, but for me:

"All Shall Perish - The Price of Existence" is my favorite album to workout to recently, especially weight training. Also, I've been jamming "Periphery - II This Time it's Personal" for cardio. Once I get through track #10, I'm done with the cardio.

Leshik  ·  3837 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Politics of Knives

Ahhhh alright. I heard him go in to that but I must have missed the mention of the term.

I'd speculate the political drift he is referring to is responsive to a history of violence. From what I understand, Golden Dawn are Neo-Nazis that, for lack of a better term, stole most of their ideologies from the German Nazis of WWII. Those Nazis for the most part got shut down when the war ended, but none the less... there was a war.

It's still speculation, but I'd guess that origins of the party would have to stem from a support for that - of what it once was. Who knows for sure? Some kid in Greece may have been indoctrinated by the Nazi occupation at the time of the war, and then went on to convince their children of the ideology, and so on and so forth until a charismatic leader emerges.

In that regard, I'd think that political drift is inevitable for now. Until we as a populous have some kind of agreement on what is right, and what is wrong, I think it will continue to happen across the globe in varying degrees.

Leshik  ·  3837 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Politics of Knives

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "political drift?"

Leshik  ·  3837 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Politics of Knives

This is a good viewing, perhaps it will bring more awareness to the situation in Greece.

For me, it begs the question, "is there a commonality, of a genesis event to start, and re-start far-right groups?" I don't understand how these things begin. I understand that they grow due to indoctrination through education... but I don't understand the inception point.

I somewhat agree, and somewhat disagree with this. I think what's killing the creative content in the world is trying to adapt old models into new surroundings; as opposed to developing a new model for current mediums.

IE: Why do we still have record labels?

I'm probably in a vast minority, but I'm of the opinion that listening to music should be free. As a guy that (used to be a) musician, I don't want to take anyone's money if they want to appreciate my work. Let's be honest; I'm writing and creating because I pretty much feel compelled to do so. It's just been something that I do. If someone wants to appreciate it, even better!

For the most part, we don't pay visual artists to look at their work. I find it strange that it's considered a social norm that we expect to pay musicians (at least) something to listen to their work, but we don't pay a sculptor, or a painter to view their piece. When someone buys an album, they're not actually buying the music, they're buying the right to listen to the music. Quite frankly, it's pretty easy to steal it anyway these days... why make criminals out of people?

On the other hand... if someone wants to take my otherwise FREE work, and use it within some creative piece of their own to generate profit, I should absolutely get financially remunerated. So... if someone is writing a movie, and wants to take my song, and put it in their movie... well... pay me.

Open source music for the regular listeners; and there's a charge to people that want to re-use my music for their own works. In my experience, people typically listen to music that's new to them because someone recommended it. Word of mouth. If my song becomes popular due to word of mouth - other content creators are going to want to use it.

As a musician, I can make money in other ways than album sales... merchandising is a huge way, licensing for television is another, selling sheet music and (verifiably correct) TAB is one, putting on an AMAZING live show is another. I'm not at all a fan of their music, but KISS is a great example. There are plenty of people that love KISS, and will buy anything KISS related. No one can go on a torrent site and steal the experience of going to a live show; nor can they torrent a physical product (yet). The music itself, being open sourced... well... I think that just seems right and fair. It's just a model that isn't for everyone.

I'm not going to get in to too much more detail on the matter, but it's something I've been thinking about for a while now. Musicians all know that the record labels aren't appropriately reimbursing them anyway. Let's just kill off the needless middleman by making their commodity non-existent. What is it that they do these days anyway? Get you exposure? How? What's a record store? Radio station? I can't recall the last time I listened to radio in my car that wasn't talk radio. Marketing and promotion? I can do this on my own for a while, then if it becomes too much to handle, hire a web marketing person, maybe more... I can get my own attorney too when I get large enough to necessitate. It is my product afterall... so essentially, it's my business to manage. Can someone remind me what it is that the RIAA did prior to going after people for downloading? How about ASCAP, BMI? They only exist to sustain themselves; they don't actually create anything.
