I use Digg. The redesign that happened a few years ago is great. I use their app and it's a good way to stay up with the most talked about and interesting news. For stuff that's more refined for my specific interests, I use Twitter.

To avoid legal problems you would need to take the path that Broforce took and slightly change the names/portray it as a parody. I would suggest "David Browie," but that doesn't fit Bowie's (magnificent) style at all.

Regardless, I think this is a brilliant idea, and now you MUST learn how to make video games in order to see this to fruition. Bowie requires it of you.

Jeshk0  ·  3357 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 106th Weekly "Share Some Music You've Been Into Lately" Thread

I have been listening to an excessive amount of Angel Olsen recently. It's the start of a new year so it's time to find the greatest things to come out of 2014, and the best album (objectively) of last year is Angel Olsen's Burn Your Fire for No Witness. Here's a live version of my favourite song off of the album:

Upon reading Meredith Graves' write-up of Cloud Castle Lake's Dandelion I fell madly in love. Here's "Sync" from their EP, which I've been listening to incessantly the last few days:

*Some other favourite albums of 2014 include Perfect Pussy's Say Yes to Love, St. Vincent's St. Vincent, Alt-J's This Is All Yours, Kithkin's Rituals, Trances & Ecstasies for Humans in Face of The Collapse, People Get Ready's Physiques, and others.

I got my iBasso DX50 through Massdrop. If I were less broke I would be using Massdrop a lot more, but I definitely like it. It's especially good if you want to know if the item is worth it. Commenters are quick to let everybody know if it's worth it, if there is someplace where it can be found cheaper, or whatever else you may need to know.

Jeshk0  ·  3541 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, how are you doing?

I wish I had time to describe how my week went/is going. I guess that's a starting point as to how to describe my week.

Jeshk0  ·  3573 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: If you were to create an elementary school curriculum, what would it include?

In my elementary school years we did have a storytelling curriculum. Towards the end of each school year all of the students would write and illustrate their own story for "Young Authors Day." Then, on Young Authors Day we had some activities having to do with storytelling and what we had come up with. We also had children's authors come to the school. The one that I remember most clearly was Bernard Waber author of Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. I never particularly enjoyed what I came up with, but it was a good experience.

And now I've just found out that Bernard Waber passed away last year.

As far as I know that doesn't apply in Washington. I've never heard of any server here being paid less than min wage. It's min wage plus tips always.

Jeshk0  ·  3588 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What's the best food you've tasted?

Panzano's. Most expensive meal of my life, but my God was it incredible. I had butternut squash, some sort of ravioli and great wine. I was surrounded by some good friends and had a fantastic evening.

Jeshk0  ·  3589 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: AskHubski: What music do you turn to when you're sad?

I really like Songza and their playlists. They have some great playlists catered for certain moods, such as one that I've been listening to recently, Hauntingly Beautiful. There are many more great playlists that are good to listen to when wanting something sad or depressed (as well as whatever other mood you may be in).

Welp... I'm out.

Jeshk0  ·  3592 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: So I bought Watch_Dogs

But damn, I hate clunky cover-based 3rd person shooter gameplay. Fucking Gears of War ruined everything.

Gears of War's cover mechanic made me stop playing that game. I could not go on because of how much I hated the cover in that freaking game.

Jeshk0  ·  3598 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Who is in?

Well, you've got me beat (no pun intended); my record is 7-8 weeks. But I feel confidant that I can do better.

Jeshk0  ·  3607 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: On Ending my 2 Year Long Affair

I "went out" with a girl while she was on a break from her boyfriend (I was the reason they were on a break). Through semantics and smoke and mirrors she wasn't "cheating," but it never felt right and I never felt comfortable about it. I wasn't surprised when she went back to him, but it sure as fuck hurt. Still does.

I've learned a bit from the experience, although I'm sure there will be more to learn once the smoke clears.

For some reason this is intensely aggravating for me. I had to quit once I got to 50%.

Jeshk0  ·  3609 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What should my High School Valedictorian speech contain?

I feel there's no reason to not make it a personal speech. Everybody's experience wasn't the same, but there are many experiences that happen during the high school years that are shared with your classmates. Your story is unique, but definitely relatable.

Here's some inspiration for you.

Jeshk0  ·  3612 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, I need to diversify my sandwich cheeses. Help me out.

Jarlsberg is my absolute favourite cheese. It's a Norwegian swiss cheese and goes great with pickles (although you probably don't want pickle-breath after lunch).

I also agree with coffeesp00ns about Manchego. Seriously delicious stuff.

Those were my two favourite cheeses when I worked at a German deli. Some other good/popular ones are havarti (especially horseradish and chive havarti (goes great with roast beef)), buttercheese (if American cheese is the standard in America, buttercheese is the standard in Germany), and gouda (aged or smoked (although I'm really not a fan of smoked gouda)).

The only time I use GPS is when I'm lost and late. Unfortunately I tend to get lost pretty easily.

Jeshk0  ·  3615 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Where IS Hubski, anyway?

I guess it isn't... Umm, Bellevue, a neighbouring city of Seattle.

Jeshk0  ·  3617 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What music or band, that is famous only in your country you suggest to listen?

I really just enjoy being angry and when my friend said that she thought the song was "fun and catchy," I felt obligated to explain my distaste for dumb pop songs.

Tom Brosseau. One of the few Tiny Desk Concerts that I've watched multiple times. His voice is angelic and his demeanour is enthralling. I could probably listen to him talk and sing for hours.

Jeshk0  ·  3618 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Where IS Hubski, anyway?

A suburb of Seattle called Bellevue. By fall I'm hoping to actually be in Seattle.

Jeshk0  ·  3618 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What music or band, that is famous only in your country you suggest to listen?

Actually I wouldn't really say it misrepresents Latvia. A lot of the europop songs from Latvia are complete trash, and europop is most of what makes up Eurovision.

Jeshk0  ·  3619 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What music or band, that is famous only in your country you suggest to listen?

I was just talking to some friends about Eurovision today and how much I hate it. We're all Latvian and were talking about this song here: "Cake to Bake" by Aarzemnieki This song is absolutely horrendous and I'm incredibly upset that it is representing Latvia in Eurovision. Most Eurovision songs are terrible pop bullshit that are meant to be broadly appealing and inoffensive, but end up being an assault on ears and musical tastes. Maybe I just don't understand europop.

This probably seems like it came out of nowhere, but Eurovision simply makes me unreasonably angry.

Jeshk0  ·  3649 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Happy April Fools, hubski! (I ... hope)

I have the same issue. I'm using Xubuntu 12.04 and Chrome (version 33.0.1750.152). Don't have the problem in FireFox.

"Dumb Tully's"

"Dumb Tim Horton's"

"Dumb Dumb Starbucks"

Or, if you don't want to go the topical route and prefer the meta route:

"A Coffee Shop"

Or the less sensical route:

"Not A Coffee Shop"

I forgot to share one of my favourite drinking songs last night: Džins ar toniku (gin with tonic)

Looks like I'll be looking around for some new Tripels in the next two weeks.

Jeshk0  ·  3659 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Weekend Reminder: Hubski Drink Club, this coming Monday March 24th, we drink Gin!

What time? I'm interested in joining for this one, but I probably won't be around for all of it.

Jeshk0  ·  3672 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: List yer favorite "Great Books" Hubski.

Why? I read Anansi Boys a few years ago and loved it, but haven't gotten to American Gods yet. Why should American Gods be read first?

Jeshk0  ·  3673 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: List yer favorite "Great Books" Hubski.

One of my favourites: The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. Historical fiction about the Belgian Congo from the perspective of a missionary family. Beautifully written and very heartbreaking.

Jeshk0  ·  3676 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Take a photo, RIGHT NOW.

Unfortunately no. They'll be in Seattle April 4th, but tickets sold out before I even found out they were on sale. Even their Vancouver and Portland dates are sold out. So it seems pretty unlikely that I'll be able to see them on the West Coast. But I looked ahead on their tour schedule and there's a small chance I could catch them in Toronto at the Toronto Urban Roots Festival. I'll be in Hamilton that weekend and it might be possible for me to go to Toronto for a day. I can only hope.
