Oh dear, I didn't check for duplicates. Sorry, I should have guessed someone would have covered the topic.

It's horrifying. They've just closed the centre (no food, no water and no protection) and our piece of shit government still won't take these poor men in, despite massive protests. Worse, they won't let anyone else take them either!

At this stage, we're just hoping that New Zealand give us the finger and just go in and TAKE them. And then initiate proceedings to charge Dutton and co. with human rights abuses.

Gem  ·  2334 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Running Bubble Has Popped

The title had me very confused! I forgot that someone will find a way to make a profit off anything, even something as solitary as running.

I've always run alone, and my preferred distance 7-10 km doesn't fit into most events. Is group racing a good experience?

His writing feels very undisciplined to me. Events and people of greater and lesser significance are jumbled up together and what seemed to be entire plot lines are simply cut off or abandoned because (I think) the author has become distracted by something else.

Aha!

Note the relevance to goats milk as well.

I've just always accepted it without thinking much about it, but now you have me interested as well! Time for some reading, I think.

I find a few drops of calcium chloride really firms up my yoghurt.

Edit: Spelling. Effing autocomplete.

I bet you're right. Isn't there already a trucker-specific brand of country music?

Gem  ·  2359 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The five extra words that can fix the Second Amendment - The Washington Post

In Australia, being a participating member of your local rifle club is required to keep your firearms licence. They say it's to keep up to date on health and safety issues, etc. I've always thought it's so your mates will notice if you start to go funny. Maybe that would be a gentle first step?

Isolation = No guns?

Gem  ·  2360 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: End of the Road: Will automation put an end to the American Trucker?

Hehe, just noticed the "old news" tag.

Gem  ·  2360 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: End of the Road: Will automation put an end to the American Trucker?

Do I need to read the article? Because the answer to that question is obviously "Yes". I'm advising anyone I know who works in the industry to GTFO now, while they can still sell their trucks and reskill.

I think nursing homes are going to look VERY different by the time we're of an age to live in them. WiFi is going to be a must.

Video games and online activities are going to be constant, residents will have their own electronics and they won't be as dependent on staff and family members to have their needs met. If we can manage our weight and deal with any sensory issues as they come up (cataract surgery, hearing aids, etc) I believe the current crop of under forties will be the least affected by dementia so far.

Gem  ·  2404 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What's Hubski Reading?

I just finished Dreamland and would officially like to apologise for my complete lack of understanding regarding the US opiate epidemic. I assumed it was slightly worse than our "ice epidemic" here in Oz, which is a non-event but something that pollies love to talk about in the lead up to election time.

Gem  ·  2416 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 'Boomers don't have a monopoly on self-righteous Millennial hate

I was having trouble with that too. What point is he trying to make? That we're not idealistic and won't colour outside the lines, so.... That's good? Is he implying we'll soberly keep the train on the rails like our granddad? (But not, I notice, our grandma, who clearly had nothing to say and no influence on her culture and society).

Although I say "we" but some time in the last five years Gen X apparently kicked me out, so I'm a millennial, just an OLD millennial who didn't grow up with computers.

I feel like space exploration has a lot in common with health sciences; no-one told us as kids that imaging tech is where the real excitement was going to be.

Thank you both for having this discussion. It's been very valuable for me. I think I'll go away now and try to figure out some questions of my own.

Gem  ·  2423 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: About this Googler's manifesto

I think it's more that he got fired for being a low-level grunt who assumed his value was higher than that of a lot of other co-workers and was bad mannered enough to say so. His saying that just sounded like someone pre-emptively trying to discredit challengers in a weasel way I really detest.

Speaking of weaselling, I really, REALLY detest the way he stated that despite general trends, traits are largely overlapping then immediately set out to treat populations according to those general trends.

I assumed everyone was overreacting, so I read the original. I really don't think they were. One or two valid points doesn't stop the overall document from being garbage.

(Also, I thought it was badly written, but that's probably just me being a snob).

Gem  ·  2424 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What do you do when you feel stagnant?

I can usually only stand things being the same for around two years. Then, if I don't shake it up somehow, I start to feel more and more blaaaaaagh.

That said, I've lived with the same partner for seventeen years and I also don't seem to be bored with my toddler yet! You don't need to change everything to move things along a bit. Try reviewing your actual goals, not just career-based ones. Actually look at what sort of life you would like to be leading in five years, ten years, twenty years... I've even found it useful to examine my hundred year goals, the world I'd like my daughter to exist in. It's really clarified some of my environmental and political responsibilities. Once you've done that, see if the actions you're taking are getting you closer to these goals. If you feel you're stagnating, I'm guessing that at least some of your goals are being neglected.

My other advice would be to read Your Money or Your Life. Even people who don't plan to leave the workforce can benefit from an examination of why they're working.

I did a search and no-one's mentioned Caravan Palace for actual years! My favourite housecleaning music.

Edit: my stupid link doesn't work, so you'll just have to YouTube them yourselves.

Gem  ·  2425 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Theory of Mind and Language Delay

Ha! Sorry, that one sounds like more of a "won't" than a "can't". Probably outside my field.

Have you tried afternoon tea as a conversation lure? I've had some luck with that strategy with my younger relatives.

Gem  ·  2425 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Theory of Mind and Language Delay

Not tangential at all! We're all trying to develop our clients' metacognitive skills, just for different goals.

Gem  ·  2425 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Theory of Mind and Language Delay

It sort of does when it lists some of the areas made difficult by the lack, but you're right, it's definitely not a scholarly article.

But when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. The ONLY purpose of language is to communicate with our fellow humans. If you're not developing a good understanding of those humans at the same time as you're developing your language skills, problems are going to creep in. I often see it with kids who lack skills in describing and storytelling; if you ask them "What did you do today?" they say "I don't know," but if you say "Did you enjoy playing tennis?" they can manage to tell you a bit about it.

It makes therapy tricky because you have to actually outright discuss metacognition with a four year old sometimes and that's hard to do. One of my favourite ways in is Lego or games like "Guess Who". The features some of these kids choose to ask questions about though!

I remember one little guy asking "Is your person on the down-low?"

That was a long discussion about what another person can and can't be expected to observe and what would be the most efficient way to win the game!

Do you have journal access via a university or something? I can definitely hook you up.

Gem  ·  2426 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Does anyone know anything about personal finance stuff?

I don't know what your best options would be outside Australia, but I still came to chime in with exactly what Klein said: Stick it in something high interest and take six months to think. Seriously, the returns you would make in that time are nothing compared to what you'll achieve by taking some time to sort things through.

Funny. Reading Turnbull's transcript made me feel simultaneously more and less positive about the smarmy do-nothing.

Ooh, fun stuff! Melbourne is a lovely city, although a little cold for me. I visit friends there semi-regularly and no matter how much I wear, it's never enough.

Gem  ·  2428 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: July 26, 2017

But to the layman here, what you're doing is still tremendously exciting!

Gem  ·  2430 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: July 26, 2017

Aww, we like you too.

I've been quiet because I've been busy but I've been furiously reading; so much so that I'm actually going to have to give the NYT some money! I wonder how much the Australia tax is for that? We always seem to get screwed, well past the exchange rate.
