I'm currently reading Camus' Myth of Sisyphus and trying to embrace the absurdity of existence as much as possible.

It also reminds me of this Vonnegut quote, "I tell you, we are here on earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different."

I've watched Alien countless times.

The Thing.

The absolute most is I once went through a weird phase where every single day for about a month, I watched Eraserhead before bed. It put me in a strange place mentally.

Yep.

Woah, cool. They must've modified the game controllers to act as midi controllers.

I'm sure they aren't playing an original composition, so that makes sense regarding the school recital.

Garbageland  ·  3209 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: I got my first proper fountain pen - a Pilot MR! What fountain pens do you have?

Yeah, that makes sense. Oddly enough, I actually just lost the brush pen I mentioned earlier while hiking with my wife. It was dumb of me to bring it with but I developed an ocd-like habit of carrying it with me at all times.

The ones I lose are usually cases of Wife: do you have a pen I can use? Me: sure, here you go. Wife: ooo I like how this writes.

And I never see it again. I usually carry a cheap pilot v7 as well as the brush just in case I need to write something and don't want to fuss with trying to write with the brush.

Garbageland  ·  3209 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: I got my first proper fountain pen - a Pilot MR! What fountain pens do you have?

Honest question: how do you guys NOT lose these expensive pens? I have a pentel pocket brush pen for inking my drawings and I am scared that I'll lose it or somehow break it, even though it's a lower end pen.

I lose normal writing pens all the time.

Edit: 100% true update! I always carry a small moleskine sketch book in my back pocket and the aforementioned brush pen. Always. I'm literally never without them.

I just went hiking with my wife and noticed that I had the sketch book but not the pen. I know I had it before the hike. It must have gotten snagged on something and pulled out of my pocket. Such a dumb bummer. I'm actually kind of surprised I was able to keep it for as long as I have.

Garbageland  ·  3210 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ask Hubski: Guns. Do You Have One? Do You Want One?

I don't. My father in law has several and a concealed carry license.

I don't really want one but my wife does. She's got a bad case of anxiety and is constantly worried about something terrible happening. Terrorist attacks, home invaders, public shooters, ragnarok, whatever.

I usually carry a knife but that's about as far as I'm willing to go. Although I do think revolvers and bolt action rifles are good looking objects, speaking only aesthetically. I wouldn't mind owning a revolver, even if it's more impractical than other firearms just because I like how they look m

Also, does anybody have any idea what the string instruments being played at 15:00 are? They're obviously electronic but I've never seen anything like them.

Garbageland  ·  3213 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are the movies or books that show a story rather than tell it?

Ugh, yeeaah. Tina Turner has no reason to be in that movie. I keep trying to convince myself that it's a good movie but holding it up to Road Warrior, it just totally falls apart. It has so many awesome concepts and ambitions but is just executed so... weirdly. And not always weird in a good way.

Garbageland  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are your favorite browser based games?

My favorite is Happy Wheels. It's incredibly absurd and over the top, gory, violent, side scrolling, physics based fun. The levels that aren't user generated are fun but the real fun comes from going user generated and then sort by highest rated.

There's an awesome game called... One Chance? I think? It's pretty great but you can literally only play it once. Once you beat it you can't go back and try for a different ending.

you can but I think you have to clear your cache and cookies. I haven't actually tried.

Garbageland  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you reading this week?

I've been struggling and clawing my way through The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell and The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus.

I have this bad habit of not being able to focus on one single book at a time.

It's been a... confusing experience. Maybe I should really just try and focus on one.

Garbageland  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you reading this week?

Definitely check out his other books if you like that one. His cultural observations just keep getting more and more entertaining and thoughtful. I've never given half a shit about Britney Spears but I could read an entire book about her written by Klosterman, I would in a heartbeat.

I downloaded a snes emulator and played some old games when I flew last. Also the album The Campfire Headphase by Boards of Canada made and excellent soundtrack for being flung through the sky.

Garbageland  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are the movies or books that show a story rather than tell it?

Yeah absolutely. It's the same idea behind horror movies. As soon as they show too much of the monster it becomes much less scary.

Garbageland  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are the movies or books that show a story rather than tell it?

All the mad max movies really. It's actually kind of frustrating because you can tell a lot of thought is put into the back stories of the supporting characters but we're only given a brief glance into this insane world.

Garbageland  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Canine Unit Joint Operations? Cujo remake has gone off the deep end.

I'm right there with you. It's just silly to me that if you're going to change the story and deviate so much from the source material, why even label it as a remake? Why not just make some more changes and release it as its own thing?

And then I remember money. Taking something people are already familiar with and rebooting it is the primary money maker in Hollywood nowadays.

Garbageland  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What do you think will be the future of technology?

this demonstration blew my mind. It's obviously still in somewhat of a fetal stage, and for all we know the "interaction" with it could've been pre-programmed and scripted (e3 conferences have been known to fake out "live demonstrations") but it's still mind blowing.

Edit: also they're not physically touching anything.

Garbageland  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What do you think will be the future of technology?

I've seen too many sci fi films to think of the singularity as being a positive change haha.

Garbageland  ·  3214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Neko Case- I Wish I Was the Moon Tonight (Live)

I want Neko Case to sing me to sleep every night. Sadly I don't think I'll ever get her, or my wife, on board with this idea.

Classic conspiracy theory logic. "I have all these pieces, they don't fit together cleanly but if you mash them together, they fit! Obama wants my reddit login! NSA RUNS FRIENDSTER!"

What's that phenomenon called where we see faces in rocks on the face of a cliff? It's that.

Garbageland  ·  3215 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: After recent events, Reddit is already more or less back to normal.

I'll admit, it is hard to stop thinking like that. Everything online instills in us this sense of immediacy. People stop thinking about a post they saw on reddit at most 12 hours after they saw it, threads on 4chan "404" hours, sometimes even minutes after being made, replies on Twitter tend to make no sense after the initial tweet is a few hours old, people are deathly afraid of accidentally "liking" a Facebook or Instagram post that's more than a month old for fear of looking like a stalker. I think the internet as a whole is running our attention spans into the dirt.

I also think it's deviously engineered to do just that but that's a tin foil hat conversation for another time.

I don't think the bracketed code bits are necessary. I just straight copied and pasted the link.

Garbageland  ·  3215 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Too Many White Hip-Hop Fans Don’t Give a Shit About Black People

Not sure I agree either. I enjoy some black metal but I can't say I agree with the militant anti-religious church burning and murder that is peppered throughout the genre's history.

Seems like you just upload to imgur and copy/paste the link and it auto imbeds it in your comment. That's what I did and it seemed to work.

I feel like sunsets are cheating a little because of course, how can you take an ugly picture of a beautiful sunset. But the main thing I like about it is the plastic lawn chair that is just floating in the negative space.

Garbageland  ·  3215 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Random Photo Challenge

Great shot. I hate the idea of trash being dumped in such a beautiful spot but it is definitely visually interesting. I like the toy car hanging from the tree. Reminds me of a Grandaddy song.

Garbageland  ·  3215 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are your favorite Windows 95/98 era video games?

Love fallout. I never got into it until after playing the new ones. It was a real shock to have a game as complex and daunting as the original fallout NOT hold your hand and tell you exactly where to go and what to do. It made me realize how much new games baby the player and it was definitely a challenge figuring out how to play it.

What does the half wheel, full wheel indicate? I'm on mobile and I think some of the functionality is missing or maybe less obvious.

It's definitely the karma factor that turns it into an echo chamber. It's hard because all the users subscribe to subs that interest them, so of course on TV show subs, people are going to quote the show nonstop and get upvoted for simply repeating lines.

And reddit loves meta humor. I completely understand new users over there not having any idea of what the hell is going on because the top comments are usually self referential. I don't have much of a karma score despite being a user for 3 years because I couldn't bring myself to play that game. Not saying you're wrong for doing it, it is fun and it's fun to watch if you're in on it. It just makes the actual interaction less valuable because it's a facade of social interaction. Sure, you might be talking with someone from across the globe, but when all you're doing is quoting Doctor Who or making Anchorman references, what's the point?

Oh, I see. Well that's hugely inconvenient, but it makes sense in terms of contextualizing archived threads.
