huh

have a date tonight, girl who climbs/runs/kayaks/bikes/etc. seems very smart and funny at least over text. we have a mutual friend so that's cool.

what's making me nervous though is last night. friend just finished her residency and had a little party at one of the local breweries, spent half the night talking with a girl i've met through a running club but never really talked to and felt a lot of chemistry, got her phone number, thinking if i want to hit her up today and ask her on a date. makes me a bit nervous just typing that out!

climbing is going well. big mountains this upcoming weekend.

my main climbing partner who’s become an amazingly good friend is moving as expected now that her travel contract is up, so she’s back to the northeast where she spends half the year with her partner

gonna miss her

still have no desire to date

this weekend rock climbing in oregon

weekend after on glaciers in northern washington

weekend after that a big rock climbing weekend

i pretty much have climbing plans through november and a tentative ice climbing trip in january

i keep meeting climbers who i get along really well with and have such a wider community than i did a year ago

is this what’s it’s like to be actively living the life you’ve envisioned

Feeling more calm than I've felt in quite some time. Sounds like it is noticeable too, based on the number of people who have told me "you've been really, really chill lately". Kind of doing my own thing, getting a lot done at work, back to long runs (17 miles each of the last 2 Saturdays, 13 miles the Saturday before that) to train for my next 50k. Rock climbing is off to an AWESOME start to the season.

Most importantly, I'm learning how to say no to things and to people. Maintaining Tuesday and Wednesday nights as my "routine" nights where I go to a run club, and go gym climbing with the same friend, respectively. Feeling...good? Content and like I'm actually committing to myself and some goals I have for this year, and finding ways to learn and be okay with the trade-offs I'm making to pursue them, which is a new feeling.

I think I'm done dating for now?

I think I'm just going to climb and run a lot? Already shifted gears. Ran 14 miles Sunday. Went rock climbing Friday and Saturday. Went to a group run / potluck with friends last night. Ran another 9 miles (workout) today...loving it.

Maybe it's the sun and warmth. I'm feeling much more inspired with my fitness and outdoors activities for the first time in a hot minute and much less like I give a shit about dating and relationships.

hubski friends

thank you for engaging me on this topic - i was not expecting this type of response, both quality and quantity

thank you for being here, on this site, in this moment. words on a screen are weird, but they've been immensely helpful to me today

Great meeting spencerflem and getting lunch with kleinbl00 the other day. Glad it worked while you were in town!

Going to have my first professional speaking experience in March! 30-45 minutes to discuss and present on Data Driven Product Development as it relates to the food/bev industry. The funny part is, the kind of stuff that veen is doing is way more advanced...but I'm excited and hopefully it will be a good networking opportunity.

Outside of that, I've been watching Get Back and it is one of the most interesting and weirdly voyeuristic documentaries I've seen. Revisited the album Let it Be and while it's not the Beatles best by any means, it's held up surprisingly well. The skits are something which I hadn't previously appreciated but during this listen found myself very entertained by how well they fit into the album tracking.

Sometimes I think I should find a product/program manager job, do that for a couple of years, and maybe spin up my own thing. Seems realistic if it was 1999.

So, uh, what happens after Delta...? Or, what happens after...October? Live it up now before the next shutdowns and mass deaths? :(

Finally got around to the photos from last weeks adventures. Too bad the weather looks pretty crappy this weekend, but it could be a good trail running weekend. Hoping to set-up a mentor relationship with a colleague who is leaving the company. Somebody who has been involved in advanced manufacturing and future state work in our company for a long time, and is now leaving to do similar work elsewhere. Wondering how I can try to follow that career path, the new process/equipment/product development steps in-between R&D and end-consumer have always been my favorite and most interesting work. Would like to continue involvement in that.

I climbed four alpine rock routes in three days and got home at 0100 today. Absolutely exhausted and a bit thrashed but what an incredible experience. Washington is so great.

ButterflyEffect  ·  1359 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: ASK HUBSKI: Have any of you or someone close to you had COVID-19?

Yes! Two direct friends of mine have tested positive. They both lost their sense of smell for a period of time but otherwise said it was no worse for them than the common cold. They’re both late 20s to mid 30s.

An older coworker who’s probably 70 also got the disease. His story was different. He was hospitalized, intubated, and on a ventilator for days. Medically induced coma, all of it. He came very, very close to dying and still isn’t the same.

I have no interest fucking around with this disease.

Protest Friday. I'm planning on going. It is really, really difficult to be at work lately. It's hard to feel like what I do for $$$ actually matters or is making a difference in the world or even my community because, you know, it's not. Not compared to a whole lot of more important things going on. But it does give me $$$ to donate, which I have been. The unfortunate side is knowing that some of the management here are doing some positive things because they know they have to, not because they actually believe any of this (true for COVID and BLM, the latter of which they don't give a shit about). Lots of talk about property being destroyed, staying safe, etc. and little to no talk about the reasons for these protests, the deaths of Black Americans across the nation...nothing.

I don't know what else to do. If there's one thing the past 4 years have taught me it's that the people in power right now do not give a fuck and we have one political party who does not give a fuck and there's a surprising amount of people who just do not get it. Having a debate this morning with a friend (white) over the fact that I am painting cops as not being your friend, and that many good cops doesn't excuse some bad cops - we all know by now that there's plenty of bad cops to go around. I'm fully prepared to lose friends over the state of our country.

ButterflyEffect  ·  1418 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Denver Just Shut Down

Many, many cities around the United States have imposed curfew and will be mass arresting citizens tonight, predominantly Black Americans. In the process, they will use tear gas against their citizens, a chemical weapon which is illegal to use in warfare but for some reason legal to use domestically.

We do not live in a just world. We are witnessing just how easy it is for our government to flip the switch into “police state”.

The death of AirBnB would be a small silver lining in the quandary that is covid. I fucking hate AirBnB. There’s some decent people using it but by and large housing shouldn’t be used for an “AirBnB portfolio”, those people can get fucked for contributing to the housing issues we have in this country.

Every so often I come across a reminder that we’re all out there still. Video calls to friends, biking with friends, celebrating a roommates birthday by making a cake and having a fire since we couldn’t invite people over. But I’m still not feeling whole.

I think it’s work and relationship related? And Covid, duh. Works got me in a place right now where I’m being asked to be both an individual contributor and focus on managing my four employees while recruiting for a 5th...the scales will tip in two weeks but it’s kind of hellish trying to do both. Which in turn results in having to go in on night shift and explain to your girlfriend why you can’t spend time together watching a movie like we had planned. That conversation never seems to go well

Managing people is stressful and rewarding and sometimes entirely unrewarding. But overall I think it's a worthwhile experience.

Whaddya wanna do, ya know? Just got into my Intermediate Alpine Climbing Course so there goes 2020. Alpine climbing, endurance running, ski mountaineering...I’m excited for the now but I’m even more excited for the five years from now when maybe I’m competent at combining those passion and skills. Hmm. Kind of makes you wonder what the fucking point of it all is when you could just go play on a mountain.

Been listening to Modern Baseball again and thinking about 2013. A good year.

Hubski's interest in Bertha is one of my favorite things about this site right now. Glad to hear she's doing well!

I’ve got some “having a shitty day” colored glasses on but should this be surprising? It seems that one of the differences between 2008, and today, is that we as a society seem to have lost part of our ability and/or desire to communicate on all facets of life from the individual connection level to the mega institution and corporation level.

There is nothing inherently wrong with going out in nature by yourself. You made how many assumptions in this comment?

How can you expect somebody to earnestly reply to this when you’re coming at it from a point of preaching and antagonizing?
