We finally realized a long-term dream and bought an espresso machine! It just came in this weekend and I spent most of Sunday wired on caffeine from trying it out. I am very surprised at how fast the thing heats up - that's probably the most unexpected thing about it. I think my shots are underextracted but am excited to practice and keep dialing them in. It's so nice to have stuff we normally have to go to a coffee shop for in the comfort of our own home.

I just read that! Had trouble with the dialogue throughout, and with the pacing during the later half. He sure loves Switzerland a lot though. And some of the ideas were neat.

I hope so. But my experience with people who have moved to smaller municipalities is that they tend to be pretty conservative - granted, most of those interactions were before the pandemic.

For me at least, it feels like there's a higher bar to contributing worthwhile content here, so I don't post or comment much. Life has also been busy. But it's still a cool place with cool people, and feels like a cozier, slower corner of the web to hang out and read.

"This is what it's like," said the recruiter, showing me the screenshot of a first-person shooter.

"This is what it's like," said the CO, as we stood drenched in sweat from head to toe.

"This is what it's like," said the EOD, defusing a mine that would have taken his knee.

"This is what it's like," said the veteran, as our unit rotated out for some rest again.

"This is what it's like," says the evening news, reminding me of things that I made myself do.

"This is what it's like," says my former spouse, with one last spiteful glance towards my house.

"This is what it's like," says the therapist, and puts me in pain that I didn't know could exist.

"This is what it's like," say people like myself, who can't know their pain and don't think to help.

It's not even a purely US asset, it's the result of cooperation between America, Russia, the EU, Japan, and China. It's one of the most powerful tributes ever made to the power of a unified scientific pursuit. And this administration wants to hand over our hundred billion dollar investment to an entity beholden to a room of shareholders.

I suppose privatization of the National Parks is next. Actually, if I recall correctly, someone posted an article on here about that a few months ago.

Starbound. It looked like one of those early access Terraria knock-offs to me until I finally got it on sale, and found out that there is a TON of stuff to do. I never made it far in Terraria for some reason - perhaps it was a lack of time or disinterest in the setting - but the main difference seems to be that with Starbound, you only have to put a couple of hours of playtime in to access the tools necessary for you to explore the infinite, star-studded universe. You also get to pilot mechs and build space stations, so this one checks most of the boxes for me. As an added bonus, it runs nicely on my definitely-not-for-gaming computer thanks to the 2D perspective.

BurnTheBarricade  ·  2149 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Advanced breast cancer disappears after new immunotherapy

From what I can tell, this sort of falls into the 1st category, along with a bit of the 3rd. They take the patient's cells and look for a type of rare white blood cell called [tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes]( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tumor-infiltrating_lymphocytes) that can hit the cancer cells specifically, then make a bunch more of them and put them back into the patient. It's promising because the treatment is effectively an extension of the patient's own immune system (it won't provoke an immune response or poison the person's own cells), the TILs can reach anywhere that the bloodstream can reach (helping to deal with metastasis), and because there is potential for this type of therapy to work on multiple different types of cancers (rather than a specific drug targeting a specific cancer's oncogene).

I just finished The Emperor of All Maladies and it's a terrific read. The timing of this research result is pretty neat.

I joined here a while ago, and it's been a nice little corner of the internet to go when I want some discussion or opining less dim-witted than Reddit or Youtube comment sections. Been away for a while cause of life stuff, but I expect I'll keep lurking here for as long as the site's up. Most of the time if I don't say anything it's cause someone's already said it.

One time I stress-ate an entire Little Caesar's Hot-n-Ready pizza during a football game. The only reason I didn't have more was because I had only bought one. Fortunately my body didn't balloon outward but I felt disgusted with myself for the next week.

So yeah. Pizza.

BurnTheBarricade  ·  2357 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Johnstown Never Believed Trump Would Help. They Still Love Him Anyway.

It isn't unusual, it happens all the time in other areas. Blind support is pretty much never a good thing. What we have here is an excellent and well-documented example of it, with a community whose voting power exceeds that of most other Americans. These people have a mountain of evidence that their town is dying, and at least a few of the people interviewed appear to know about Trump's failures on almost every policy point that he campaigned on, and they refuse to even acknowledge any possible failure on his part. Like the article says, it's less that goalposts have been moved and more that they have been eliminated altogether.

If I may go beyond the article for a bit, the emergence and newfound prevalence of this aptly described "vague personal loyalty" is now combined with a disturbing rejection of former consensus sources of facts. The people interviewed in the article probably watch Fox News exclusively, listen to talk radio when they drive, and go to a church where the pastor is not above shoehorning political issues into his sermons. I understand that this is conjecture, but it accurately describes many of my friends and family who hold similar views to the people in the article. The worry here is that this complete alternate ecosystem of information is leading to a fundamental split within America where opposing views can't even come to the table, let alone reach meaningful consensus. Additionally, toxic or distracting viewpoints can be much more easily circulated within these alternate ecosystems:

“The thing that irritates me to no end is this NFL shit,” Schilling told me in her living room. “I’m about ready to go over the top with this shit. We do not watch no NFL now.” They’re Dallas Cowboys fans. “We banned ’em. We don’t watch it.”

Schilling looked at her husband, Dave McCabe, who’s 67 and a retired high school basketball coach. She nodded at me. “Tell him,” she said to McCabe, “what you said the NFL is …”

McCabe looked momentarily wary. He laughed a little. “I don’t remember saying that,” he said unconvincingly.

Schilling was having none of it. “You’re the one that told me, liar,” she said.

    She looked at me.

    The NFL?

    “Niggers for life,” Schilling said.

    “For life,” McCabe added.

This guy also moonlights as security for ambulances. He was quoted from the video as planning to send this hospital all of the homeless patients and move people with insurance elsewhere.

What a piece of scum. I hope he never receives treatment at any ER again.

Also, when I hover over the little rectangle now, it still reads "Hubski 2017 Funding Goal." Not sure if you're the guy to talk to about that, or if it's an error on my end, but I figured mentioning it would be helpful.

Love me some hbomberguy. Stuff like this reminds me to take a beat and think about whether I feel something because it's a genuine reaction, or because I've been tricked into feeling this way by someone clever; and I'm guessing we underestimate the number of times it was a trick by someone clever.

Buffalo Trace is good, and I can second the recommendations for Maker's, Four Roses Single Barrel, and Bulleit. I'm partial to Maker's myself but mostly because I can get it at a good price. Make sure and try several if you can! I know the liquor store close to me sells half-fifths of several brands which is less of an investment for something you might not like.

Well, this is a bit of a surprise. I wonder if the intelligence community told them anything in private, because I can't imagine a revenue-harming decision like this happening without significant external pressure.

BurnTheBarricade  ·  698 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: This kills the republican party

That is true, the general trend of the area will be towards a more liberal stance. However, will that make the conservative-but-ashamed, "oh I don't watch the news it's not edifying" crowd vote Democrat? The skinheads certainly won't be changing their affiliations. And our binary voting structure seems to preclude any sort of change aside from R --> D or R --> no vote.

FWIW I have little exposure to truly rural areas outside of the South.

BurnTheBarricade  ·  2472 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Health Care Overhaul Collapses as Two Republican Senators Defect

The best (read: most ironic) part about all of this is that the vote was delayed because of McCain's health complications. His surgical procedure, a craniotomy, costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $70,000 (said Google). There's no way an uninsured retiree at his age would have been able to afford such a procedure.

BurnTheBarricade  ·  2507 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Gingrich: Time to rethink special counsel Mueller

Sounds like Mueller is getting close to something ugly. Can't wait to hear what it is.

I am reminded of Mackinder's Heartland theory, which talks more from a purely geopolitical standpoint and also feels a bit outdated in the modern setting.

That thread is a good read

Interesting. If someone tries to distill an explanation of the current structure of the world into one theory predicated on a single variable, I guess control of money is as good as any to use. Or maybe I skimmed that Wiki article too quickly lol

The reason I like it, I think, is because it satirizes the entire 80's cheesy action movie genre in a low-budget style that basically makes it so bad that it's good. It's definitely a YMMV though, and pretty polarizing. Out of 5 people I've shown it to, 2 loved it and 3 absolutely hated it.

Being drunk the first time I saw it may also have helped.
