Ave  ·  3419 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: I'm an artificial intelligence researcher and I'm not afraid. Here's why.

For many A.I. researchers, the ultimate goal is to create an artificial intelligence that will be capable of reprogramming itself. In other words, removing the need for human input and directions. We're fumbling around with chatbots and still stalling on the definition of what A.I. is., and we are nowhere near creating one that can make moral or ethical judgments, but I think it's a fair to say that we'll get there eventually.

And are A.I. tools really safe? Just having a large amount of data around is dangerous. If the wrong hands get on something important, say medical records or personal information...

If I'm on Facebook, yeah. Sometimes they really annoy me, but it's also useful to know if PolicyMic has an article on it to pander to the masses (always).

Thanks. I should have realized that it would be on the user profile page :P

Features. I still haven't figured out how pming works. Does it even exist at the moment?

Have you...tried them?

I feel like that whole article was more about a young woman's boobs than anything else.

It's pretty hypocritical to decide that a game is awful because it's encouraging vanity. Vanity being primarily a female fault in this case, because the game is marketed to girls.

What's wrong with fantasizing about it? Frankly, it's better than fantasizing about an otome game like Amnesia, where young girls are taught that they should accept mental and physical abuse from a guy they don't know because "he loves her".

Yet, no one complains about that. Or at least, the people that complain are in the clear minority.

I've never really hated math, but I hated getting projects in math class. I do not ever want to write 10 pages (and in pencil, the pain!) about why I would choose one cell phone plan over another ever again.

Worst experience ever.

That bit about purchasing titanium from the Soviet Union reminded me of a particularly bitter passage in book I once read, can't remember the title. The author claimed that the US government bought out Canadian uranium through shell companies, and allegedly, some Canadian scientists were really angry about the whole thing. Well, it was all very patriotic.

From a moral standpoint though, it was all pretty awful for the Dene people and for the miners, who were not informed about the health risks.

Surprisingly, I've never actually heard anyone call someone else a pussy before. Lack of exposure, maybe, but I don't feel like it means anything anymore. Perhaps it's dying out.

Other sexist insults? Not so much.

Ave  ·  3569 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: $11,000 for Every Household: Could Guaranteed Income Work for America?

What I mean to say is that in a time when most developed countries have a working publicly funded health care system, the U.S. is the exception. Sure, there are disadvantages such as higher taxes and longer wait times, but this system is good for most people.

Is Obamacare working? Well, I'm comparing it to Canadian healthcare right now, and to me, it is not working. Some people are uninsured, not everyone has equal access to services, it's not controlling the cost of healthcare, and states have wayyy too much control over the system.

I guess this is the fundamental difference between US government and Canadian government, which is more centralized. But this is also why this welfare system probably won't work in the US, at least not at a large scale. It should be possible under miraculous circumstances (e.g. a very popular President, widespread support, war), or maybe at the state level.

But that's beside the point. It's 2014. They've had a long time to fix healthcare, and they could have ripped off either the Canadian system or the Scandinavian system. They didn't. I don't think they can.

So if healthcare doesn't work, and it sounds like a pretty reasonable idea, what would the Republicans think about this welfare system? Gasp! We're spending money to let the government control our lives!

So...what is this saying? Successful neoliberalism ultimately strips away free will?

I'm not sure if this is just my poor comprehension, but in that case the comparison to Soviet communism hardly stands.

Yes. Your lips should not move when you read. I don't even understand why they teach it in schools. It's how they make kids illiterate.

Ave  ·  3572 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Does keeping your mouth shut make you weak?

Haha, all the interesting people in my school are overly tolerant. As a result, we have spent the last 2 days lambasting Israel, less because we care, and more because it's definitely more interesting than the World Cup conversation (which has devolved to a few of the interesting people messaging everyone indiscriminately to tell them that Germany will win).

So far, no one has dared to call us anti-semites. Is it good? No.

I brought out, forthright in that very conversation, that we had a bad habit of using world atrocities to entertain ourselves, and we accepted that statement without any kind of defense or moral concern.

If, one day, someone was sick and tired of it, we would definitely not consider him/her a coward.

Maybe it's my personal immaturity, but I find individuals with strong religious views that do not think about religion in the context of science as more commendable than diehard atheist scientists. There is a trend for atheists to take up atheism, or worse, science, as a belief system (which it shouldn't be).

Just the idea of mixing any kind of faith with science is a corruption of science's core values, because it requires an acceptance of truth that you can't have if "believe" something. I think the same goes with people that use science as a tool to help them "not believe" something, which is hardly any different from "believing" something. In this circumstance, perhaps self-enforced ignorance is better.
