This is nothing new. I remember hearing this same statistic maybe 20 years ago. I always thought of it when I started in on harder stuff and it comforted me. There was one point though when some of my friends whom I don't consider users started 'booty bumping'. Sticking drugs up your ass for a more potent high is dumb. Dumb and gross.
