I'm a snarky asshole for pointing this out but you're a person not a demographic. Though I'm with you - if I wanted to do the homesteader fuck-the-world thing I'd personally pick the cheaper plot of empty land without all the ghosts and failed dreams.
My road trip a few years ago basically taught me that there's not much reason to live in most of the middle of the country, and it's only a matter of time before all the people who do live there either figure that out and move or pass on. Fun fact: I drove through Tucumcari when the only grocery store in town was going out of business. From google it looks like the place either recovered or got replaced but holy cow can you imagine? That place only exists for the sake of being about halfway between Amarillo and Albuquerque, and not many people take I-40 for fun anymore now that it's not called Route 66.
