Yeah, parser nerds can't really convey the idea to normal human speech, can't they? Look at tutorials like ShareLaTeX (it also allows you to work from the browser) or Learn LaTeX in Y Minutes instead.

It's a lot like HTML/CSS/JavaScript. You want to have all the bells and whistles? You'll need to tweak and write a lot of code. Do you just want basic use from a premade template or setting generated by 'wizard' (available in most LaTeX environments)? You are pretty much good to go after going through some basic lesson, like the ones that I've linked you. And veen is right, when it comes to handling a lot of maths, internal references and bibliography it's a great thing to use.
