Try Basic d20. Other than that, perhaps consider mechanics like ones in Warhammer FRP or Dark Heresy instead of d20? I can describe both in detail if you are not familiar with them. OR… fuck the 3.x part of D&D and go back to so-called Blue Box Set! Players brochure is around 40 pages, DM has only a little more to ge through. You can get it from here for 5$. You can also get Expert Set if you want. Seriously, I have no idea why D&D evolved from such an elegant and easy-on-rules game to later monstrosities :/.
