Truth. Larry Niven, in order to give these "curios" a reason to exist, hypothesized a totalitarian future where political prisoners had their personalities erased and replaced by the bountiful surfeit of useless corpsicles that had been moldering away in freezers for hundreds of years. These composite humans were then used for hard labor and jobs that ordinary citizens were too valuable to waste on. Which, really, is a whole lotta road to cover in order to get to a point where reanimated nerds from history become a functional part of society.
