The question with the detector was always "is it sensitive enough" not "is GR wrong." The physics community held it as an article of faith that gravity waves existed and could be detected, the worry was that LIGO was about three orders of magnitude too insensitive to detect anything but a couple black holes colliding, and the statistics on that happening within the lifetime of the project varied from 10 to 50%. Looks like the coin came up heads.
