Yeah, the racial implications seem like a given in this, pretty much targeted towards minorities, and also a bit of a class issue as well. Regarding the tangent, it reminds me of my high school where I wasn't allowed to wear a pink bandana tied around my wrist because that could be seen as indicating I was part of a gang. In a rural, farm-town school where the only "gang" in 100 mile radius were three kids who rode bicycles and black clothing.
