I don't know when this phrase vanished from the popular lexicon, but as a general rule of thumb, a great deal can be learned about any community by observing until you think you have a handle on it, then cautiously, politely engaging in discussions. Had you observed this gentle maxim, you would likely have gotten your answers without demanding boons and pissing all over a community based on personal connections.
