i was the broke guy in college washing his socks with bar soap in the shower. that being said, Im fairly sure I purchased 90% of my college textbooks (and my kindbud) from basketball/football players who had the uncanny ability to walk into bookstores, get books at no cost without stealing, and then sell them to me for a fraction of the cost. i know that SOMEONE, including myself, is paying for these books, but given the current system, I wouldn't have had them if it weren't for college athletics.

nice. now my arrest record, alcoholism, childish tendencies, bad hair piece, and dragon-slaying can all be blamed on palahniuk, pollack, seinfeld, warhol, weiss and hickman.

in the clear. hah! all the constructive stuff I did on my own, though.

prediction: legislation such as this will attract the attention of the press worldwide, doing MORE damage to the American image as people continue to wonder "what sort of place is America, that this was necessary?" except in England. from what I understand, they'll probably reject similar laws in-between hedgehog kicking bans and "video cameras every three meters held by on-duty traffic wardens" funding. edit for derp

ive had an endless number of questions every time ive seen that picture on the tubes. until just now, though, ive never noticed the pie nor have i wondered why a pie was being so awkwardly touched... those masks! too distracting... seriously though, that pose is unnatural enough that someone, at some point, said to that kid,"now, touch the pie. just touch the pie. touch it!"

hah. he basically said that a tastefully done full-page advert opposite an article in newsweek, etc, would be more likely to draw a positive/favorable response than a banner-ad, a pop up ad, or even an animated flashing banner pop up.

frankly, i agree with him. and just in case youre still skeptical: why does adblock exist, if not to bypass the obnoxiousness of the google model?

that being said, i agree with your "go directly to the consumer" point. thats a newish idea that has worked out well on several fronts, but requires a certain amount of several other factors to work successfully... the standard seems to be google ads, and i agree that print ads were much less obnoxious, and therefore much more likely to get done whatever the advertisers had in mind.

and finally, i hate ads. on tv, in mags/comics, before movies, and anywhere else; but the google model (much like the billboard) has out-shouted any interest i could have possibly had in any product, to the point where i specifically AVOID said products.

edit just for fun: my favorite part was "inability to hide derision", followed by the rest of your point. heh.
