Good review, mk - I read this a few years back, and feel exactly the same way.

It is a good book, and Heller is a gifted writer, but (unlike Catch-22) this book is absolutely no fun, at all, and I would be hesitant to recommend it. Bleak and depressing, with a pathetic and unlikable protagonist.

There aren't many good things written about Hellers other works, because there ARE no other Hellers novels, by the way. This is a well-written novel, but if it weren't for Catch-22, Something Happened would be unknown, I'd wager.

"According to Mad writer Frank Jacobs, a letter was once successfully delivered to the magazine through the U.S. mail bearing only Alfred E. Neuman's face, without any address or other identifying information."

He has a head-mounted thingy that lets him see what the GoPro is recording while he flies, but he doesn't usually use it - too limited a field-of-view. He's also playing with some new auto-piloting gear at the moment - very cool stuff. It lets you set up a route and the plane flies itself.

I moved to NZ from Oklahoma in 1998, and have not regretted it since, not even a little. It was a big jump, but we jumped with both feet anyway - me, my wife (Arizonan by birth) and a teen-aged son. We soon had a half-Kiwi grandson, and we've adopted new family ties here. Got my NZ citizenship in 2008. This land is now my home, and I love it dearly.

It's tough to not see friends and family for long periods of time, but everything else is good. My accent won't go away, so most Kiwis assume I'm a tourist or a short-timer until they get to know me.

I regret that I haven't had much spare time lately to follow conversations on hubski.

William Forsythe, not Christian Slater.

This is all within a couple hours drive, yes. Some much closer.

I think everyone is forgetting that the whole reason for the term "pro-choice" is because anti-abortion activists didn't like that (accurate) label, and changed it to the more PC term "pro-life" (because who would be anti-life?)

It's a PC reaction to a PC reaction.

Wright brothers, eh? Some say the first heavier than air powered flight was actually achieved by a Kiwi - Richard Pearse :

Humans are animals too.

The US interstate highway system is way bigger than all those.
