This one is my favorite for pure ridiculousness/stupidity.

Exactly what it needed! I do have one (nitpicky) suggestion, average comment score isn't really intuitive as a number, it isn't obvious what it means. I assume its the average of integers corresponding to the "ticks" you get from other people, but since you never represent this as a number maybe it would be more fitting to use a different display mechanism?

by Standard_Nerd · link · parent · post: Does Hubski's format and functionality solve the issues that Reddit now faces?
As long as there are people who care about sharing quality content on hubski, I think hubski should be able to avoid the issues that reddit faces. To me, reddit's problem is that it is now dominated by people who don't care about sharing quality, they only care about getting attention. Unfortunately, these two things don't coincide. I think if the attention-wh... er... cravers were to gravitate to hubski, the same tactics would still succeed, since the people who are amused by DAE, recycled memes and boring family/friend pictures would presumably migrate too. However, as mentioned by the other commenters, this shouldn't prevent people who aren't interested in this reddit-style content from continuing to share and enjoy quality content. The only potential issue is the streams of discovery becoming inundated with "bad" sharers to the point where quality sharers are impossible/difficult to find.
So to address MY problems with reddit, I think the most important focus should be insuring that the discovery tools are robust and effective, and do not cause less popular sharers to be drowned out.
by Standard_Nerd · link · parent · post: Are Memes Art?
Can we say that art has a quality gradient, that is, some art can be qualitatively "better" than other art? I realize art is subjective, but I still feel as though something can meet this definition of art but not necessarily do a good job of it. If that's true, I think memes are at most, low quality art. Memes are intended to invoke a feeling, but they do so with very little subtlety or creativity. They also lack depth or any profundity, in general.

Very cool technology! It would be interesting to see the video they mention, the skeptic in me is afraid the screenshots might be the product of cherry picking :(

Fortunately seems I was wrong!

Very cool idea, I hope they do well with this. I'm quite intrigued to see what can be done with the narrative when the core gameplay is so naturally entwined with the story-telling. Hopefully they won't run into marketing trouble as mentioned in the article.
by Standard_Nerd · link · parent · post: Dinosaur feathers found in Alberta amber
"The protofeathers don't look like feathers from any modern bird, but are similar to those seen in fossils of therapods.", from one of the captions and
"A theropod fossil from China shows bristle-like feathers on the head, neck, back and tail. However, many of the details have been obscured by the fossilization process", also from the captions.
I would assume this is why, but you're right, its never really explicitly stated.
by Standard_Nerd · link · parent · post: Hubski Update: A tweak
Personally this seems like a better (as apposed to aggregate sharing) route. It's a system with a lot of potential for avoiding the group think/ attention-grubbing issues that are ubiquitous in social media at the moment. I just registered but this seems like a change in the right direction!

Even aside from his kindness and inspirational qualities, you have to take a step back and respect the man for his integrity. Not many people can stay that true to themselves under the weight of fame.
by Standard_Nerd · link · parent · post: Is everyone here a reffugee from reddit?
Loads of potential here! For a while I've felt like reddit has been degrading, the content has become so inwardly focused, uninteresting, and repetitive. As others have stated, posts seem to be to gain attention rather than actually entertain or educate. The idea of eliminating the overarching frontpage that shows the most popular content, cumulative karma points, and simplifying the upvote/popularity system is a promising way of addressing the problems with reddit. Hopefully hubski can avoid having popular users mimick the problem of popular subreddits drowning out good content.
