Hubski Update: Silent spam.

We've had a recent influx of spammers on Hubski. As a result, I implemented a change that we have been planning for some time. Starting today, if a user has a significant number of others ignoring them, they may be dropped from the external posts altogether.

Globally ignored users may still post, they can be followed, and their posts can be shared. However, Hubski won't include them in content discovery.

Importantly, this 'global ignore' is not simply based upon the number of users ignoring an account. It also considers other metrics of user activity and appreciation. As a result, it would be very difficult to cause a legitimate user to be dropped from the external posts by ignoring the account.

Of course, I can't say exactly what metrics are used to separate heavily-ignored users from spammers, but I will monitor the global ignore list and ensure that it isn't being inappropriately applied.

As always, feedback is much appreciated.

BTW, you can see the list of those users that you ignore under 'controls'.

After pushing this, I had the idea that it might be good to include an 'ugly feed' option. That is, instead of the external feed, which considers global ignoring, a user could opt for an 'ugly feed' that was completely unfiltered. In that way, if someone really wanted to see auto parts spam, they could still get it.

Do you foresee a need for this?

I think it's just a nice way to maintain transparency.

Sure, if it's easy for you to do. I can see how it would be a nice way for people to see what was/wasn't being omitted. I'd probably never use it but there are probably those that would. Also it would eliminate false accusations of site discrimination from ever occurring. -Sure, why not.

Seeing reddit's recent and not so recent problems with transparency, this might be a good call.

FYI, I am aware that spam tags are currently showing up in the community page. I'll be fixing that as well.
