ASK HUBSKI - Help me buy a car!

Cue the funeral march - my perfectly delightful 1988 Toyota Camry All Wheel Drive gave up the ghost today. I've been rollin' this sweet thing for six years now. I loved it. But all great things eventually come to an end.

Now it's time to do some car shopping. I'm not very interested in vanity or speed (thought I wouldn't necessarily turn either down). I'll give you the parameters: I don't really want a truck or an SUV. I would like to keep 5 seat belts. It should have 4 doors due to children getting in and out. I lean toward Japanese cars (I know.. I know... being from Michigan, I should support Detroit - but whatever - they made too much crap for too long for me to trust them) but would also consider a VW or even another Volvo. My budget is around 15k, but I would love to find the perfect beast for 6k. I live in Denver, so I get to ride my bike to work a lot, but in the winter, and when the calendar fills up, I still need a car.

What say you my fellow Hubskiers? What kind of car do you have? What kind do you want? Why?

I have some ideas about what I'm looking for, but I'm hoping that something you suggest will spark something I hadn't previously thought of.

I would choose either volvo or subaru that have an awd/4wd feature for the options you are interested in and the climate you live in

Definitely wouldn't suggest VW, too many mechanical pitfalls

Second this. Everybody I know that has had one has had problems, usually with the electrical, my old 89 shitkicker Jetta notwithstanding...

Since my brother stole my truck and took it to university with him, I've been driving my mommy's subaru legacy. Thing is a sick little beast. I drive like a maniac and it still gets over 20mpg around town. It's a fun car to drive, lots of leg room, etc. Plus the sound system that came with this one is nice as fuck.

Remember that modern Volvos are essentially Fords (sad to say). I drive a 1979 Volvo 200-series; I found one in remarkably good condition, and I love it. It's getting harder and harder to find them in good condition, but if you can, they are magnificent old beasts.

I had a Mazda 626, I think it was a 96. It was basically a Probe. I hated that car. But, Ford has coma a very long way in quality since.

I drive a 2011 Taurus and it's great. Lots of room, smooth ride, fast, nice features and so far it seems like a really well made car. Prior to this I drove a Hyundai Elantra which was also a nice ride and very dependable. The Taurus blows it out of the water though. MUCH nicer. I should mention that my work provides the car (I travel a lot) and so I didn't have a choice in the matter. That said, I would buy one of my own accord.

I would get an Outback if I had those desired features.
