For those that follow me, I will be posting a lot of bad, early stage children's poems to Hubski under the tag #childrenspoemsbytng
I would not blame anyone for ignoring this tag. There will be many.
Yeah, the "ignore" is there for a reason :) But if you ignore the tag you can still follow the person. I dumped a bunch on Hubski just now, it will be more intermittent going forward. I just want an easy way to document them and edit them and Hubski actually works well for this.
Most of these are like, really good. I hope you do a Kindle Single, or a chapbook, or something. If I can offer some constructive criticism? The metre is the only thing that could use a bit of work. Metre isn't essential in poetry; but in children's poems, perfect metre really helps give it that playful step. A lot of them are only one or two lines from having perfect metre. Some are so close, but every line is like one syllable off. I know metre is hard. Really hard. But it makes such a difference, especially in this genre. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to criticize. They're fantastic stuff. I think most of them are just a few syllables shy of Shel Silverstein–quality.
Thanks Rob, that's really awesome feedback. I agree 100%. All of these, with the exception of Pirhanas Love Pretzels are first passes. They need lots of work. My plan is to continue to write more and more and amass enough to put together a book of children's poems. I was very in to the Shel Silverstein books as a kid and credit them for having a huge influence in my life. I would also like to partner with an illustrator that could help bring these to life. Thanks for reading them. Your feedback is awesome and is in line with the feedback I've received from others, namely my wife. She said, "they're just a bit off."
