I still love this post. Just thought I'd revisit it and let you know.
Great piece that I reference often.

The bone-surgery reminded me of the chinese practice of foot-binding. As newgreen said, the lenghts we'll go for acceptance and conformity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_cranial_deformation
I'm 165cm (5''5') -- shorter than the policeman. My friends are, generally, taller than me. But I'm ok. I sometimes think about it, but it's not something that bothers me. Cosmic irony: I have a friend who was shorter than me when I met him. He was young, though, and some years later, when I encountered him again, he'd grown taller than me. Now I, who used to tease him about his size, was teased back. It was a friendly revenge, but still it shows how this -- and many others -- preconceptions are hidden beneath our lives.

Great post NotPhil. It really made me think about how I might be guilty of discrimination against short people. My best friend growing up was really short, I know it was something he thought about constantly even if we all didn't. He had no problem meeting girls, in fact he was somewhat of a ladies man. I think confidence is king, though it is likely much easier to acquire this confidence when you're tall. I was amazed by the lengths (excuse the pun) and the amount of pain that people will go to in order to gain a couple of inches. Also, HGH shots for your child?? -that was disturbing.
It was an entertaining and eye opening video.
