Update 7: Hubski's first Amature Phone Photography Contest,

Nowadays, almost everybody has a camera in their pocket in the form of a cell phone. Purists might scoff, but there is no doubt that our phones are capable of capturing incredible shots. I've been taking a lot of shots with my camera phone over the past months, and it inspired me to suggest we have a Hubski Amature Phone Photo Contest!

Rules:

1. Photograph must be taken with your phone. 2. After effects processing must be done from you phone as well, whatever app you use, if any. 3. That's it!

Here is a link to one of the most basic photography tricks for beginners, -the rule of thirds, which I use below: http://digital-photography-school.com/rule-of-thirds

For hosting from your phone, imgur has an app for apple and android I believe. Just open and select the photo from your camera roll and it gives you a paste-able link. Nice and easy.

My girlfriend and a few of her friends recently got tattooed in a space in downtown Detroit. Here is one of a buddy going under the needle. This was taken with an iPhone 4, and processed with the iPhoto app available from their app store.

Here is 'Green Light: Detroit' shot by mk. iPhone, Hipstamatic, filter: Kodot XGrizzled Film

Here is the Duke Chapel in the background and a statue of James Buchanan Duke by thenewgreen:

'Shred' by steve:

'Life's a Ball' by onlinejen22:

Here is 'Castle Guard Part 1' by krisc

Enjoy 'Leaving Sydney' by insomniasexx:

cw brings us 'Wine Blot on Glass'

Who's in on this? Get out there and shoot this weekend!

PS, imgur compression makes you lose a bit of fidelity when you upload, so get the best focus you can if it's important to your shot.

Edit: There are no winners and losers in this contest, so no pressure! The 'contest' part is just with yourself, capturing something you feel you dig enough to post ;)

Lots of good shit up here, but you've got my vote so far.
by cW 405 days ago  ·  link
Wow. Very kind of you to say so, and I'm glad to know you enjoyed it!
by thenewgreen 406 days ago  ·  link
There is something very "Dexter" about this photograph. It looks like the sort of image a "blood spatter analyst" would be able to get a lot out of. I think it's beautiful and if you look within the red, where it's less dense and the light breaks through you can almost make out a faint face. At least that's what the Rorschach is saying to me. Great work.

Awesome shot! I can tell she has more skill with that in her pinky finger than I ever had...
by thenewgreen 408 days ago  ·  link
Alright, this qualifies as a work of art imo. Me and cliffelam finished the Wake Med 10k this morning on Team Hubski.com http://i.imgur.com/zijPW.jpg

Good times.

I can't believe any adult can take a picture that badly. Lordy.

I just got back from a 20 mile ride at Jordan lake and I know one thing for sure: I am through exercising today.

When you were done were you a starving artist?

I ate 3 sandwiches and a banana. Starvation averted.

hi! hey these look cool i don't have a phone with a camera so i can't enter nooooo.....
by mk 406 days ago  ·  link
Just tape a phone to your camera and shoot. :)
by thenewgreen 406 days ago  ·  link
Ha! Khaaan you should do this, just be sure to take a photo of your phone rigged camera for proof that it's a "camera phone". I'd say it's within the guidelines. What say you ecib?

Also, ecib thanks again for posting this. I've been snapping pictures all weekend and it's actually helped me notice things I otherwise may have missed. Very cool!

by ecib 406 days ago  ·  link
We're pretty fast and loose with the guidelines here. Just have fun! ;)
by krisc 407 days ago  ·  link
None of these are from this weekend, but I'll try and snap something worth posting this weekend. All shot and edited on iPhone below, using Camera+. Wide angle stuff is shot with an Olloclip.

Dutch Landscape // Dutch Landscape alternate view // Windmill // Castle Guard part 1 // Castle Guard part 2 // Castle Guard part 3 // Castle View // Beach Day //

by insomniasexx 407 days ago  ·  link
I really like Castle Guard 1
by thenewgreen 309 days ago  ·  link

Are those birds in the sky in "Castle View"? I think I have to change my vote, that's a beautiful shot.

by krisc 306 days ago  ·  link

Those are birds actually. Lucky timing with a camera out!

by thenewgreen 295 days ago  ·  link

I'd say so, very lucky. Photography is a lot of fun. I just took a family trip and actually used our camera quite a bit instead of relying solely on my iPhone. It is so nice to look at the world through the eye of a camera as opposed to through the screen of a phone. BIG difference. Plus that sound, that click of the shutter is just awesome.

by thenewgreen 407 days ago  ·  link
Are the eyes of the Knight edited in any way? They are pretty amazing. I personally love Dutch Landscape alternate view because all things "human" are blurry.
by krisc 407 days ago  ·  link
That's the flipped up visor of the knight's helmet actually, but I see it as eyes every time too, even knowing what it is. That landscape one worked out well for the tilt shift effect and ended up better than I thought it would be. Thanks tng!
by thenewgreen 406 days ago  ·  link
No problem krisc. Good stuff. I had a dream last night about Don Quixote and I'm sure it stemmed from your photo.
by insomniasexx 407 days ago  ·  link
There are gorgeous
by ecib 407 days ago  ·  link
They don't have to be from this weekend. These are all incredible. Any particular one you want me to feature at the top? I'm Having trouble picking one because they are all so good....
by thenewgreen 407 days ago  ·  link
ecib, you should throw castle guard part 1 up there, it deserves the "big screen" imo.
by krisc 407 days ago  ·  link
Thank you! I guess I'm partial to Castle Guard part 1 more than the others for some reason. Maybe it's all that Game of Thrones recently.
by ecib 407 days ago  ·  link
Castle Guard Part 1 was my first instinct then. Updated!
by mk 407 days ago  ·  link
I like Castle Guard part 1 and part 3. But Dutch Landscape has an awesome composition. If I were choosing one for my wall, it'd be Dutch Landscape.

Great photos.

EDIT: Alternate view is totally my pic. I love it.

Aw, thanks mk, much appreciated!

Decided to tour Durham this afternoon and take pic's. This one was my favorite: http://i.imgur.com/gAyDS.jpg

It's the Duke Chapel in the background and a statue of James Buchanan Duke -with a bird pitched atop his head.

Super busy with family in town but more to come...

Very nice! Updating now!

I'm in. You should put the images up to as they come in.

Come again?
by mk 410 days ago  ·  link
I just mean, if I comment with an imgur link to my photo, you could edit and put it below yours with my name on it; all the photos can be seen in one post.
by ecib 410 days ago  ·  link
Oh, got it! Great idea and will do!
by thenewgreen 410 days ago  ·  link
Cool, this is going to be a lot of fun. I just went through my phone to see if I have anything worthy of posting, I don't. I used to use my phone for more artistic shots but right now it's got close to 500 of my daughter and that's about it.

I'm definitely making an adventure out of this. Great idea ecib!

by ecib 410 days ago  ·  link
Look foreward to seeing what people come up with! :)
by thenewgreen 410 days ago  ·  link
I don't have any photo apps, any suggestions?
by ecib 410 days ago  ·  link
iPhoto is 4.99 but is well worth the price. Incredibly easy to use and very powerful. It will be useful for the life of your phone if you dig taking pics with it, and it will always have great integration and support since its a flagship Apple app. Camera+ is .99 and it was the king of all photo apps before iPhoto came along. Camera+ still has some features for taking pictures that iPhoto does not since it has its own camera interface. iPhoto is just for editing where camera+ is for editing as well as camera features. Camera+ is fantastic though.

I would go with either of those if you have an iPhone :)

by thenewgreen 410 days ago  ·  link
Thanks ecib, I got iPhoto and I look forward to using it. Now I just need to convince my wife that I should get a tattoo... that's part of this, right?

Oh absolutely! Superficially this is a photo contest, but at its core this is really a thread about haste and regret.
