Here's a kind of naive question. Have any of these surveys determined how likely men and women are to ask for a raise? My intuition tells me that men probably are more aggressive in asking for higher compensation, which can go a long way. Anyone know the answer to this?

b_b, this is a completely valid question. Laurelai, do you think that this could play a role in the disparity between men/women's pay? I know that every pay increase I have ever received has come out of me aggressively seeking it. I also know that although my wife is highly competitive and no shrinking violet in the workplace, she would be more timid than I when asking for increased compensation.

If this were true then the gap would be around the same on all or most professions, as we can see here http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/mar/08/internat... it isnt
