What do you think Hubski? When you make it famous as the hot lead, you shouldn't be shocked when they call you out for gaining some LB's. They did it to Vince Vaughn too.

Live by the sword, die by the sword

Her full article is worth reading.

I think the industry that works to fuel the envy and curiosity surrounding people like Judd are largely to blame. It doesn't have to be this way. Of course, when you are part of a celebrity industry you are going to be the focus of uncomfortable attention, but I think she makes a point here:

News outlets with whom I do serious work, such as publishing op-eds about preventing HIV, empowering poor youth worldwide, and conflict mineral mining in Democratic Republic of Congo, all ran this “story” without checking with my office first for verification, or offering me the dignity of the opportunity to comment. It’s an indictment of them that they would even consider the content printable, and that they, too, without using time-honored journalistic standards, would perpetuate with un-edifying delight such blatantly gendered, ageist, and mean-spirited content.

IMO these outlets probably did not want her input because it risked dispelling or diminishing a great scoop. That is dishonest and mean-spirited.

It does happen to men, but not nearly as much as it does to women.

First of all, you better be super goddam hot if you're going to critique AJ. She makes a great point here, too:
Patriarchy is not men. Patriarchy is a system in which both women and men participate.
The same could be said for racial bias. Until a group feels that they deserve and are worthy of full inclusion, then they are doomed to be looked on as second class. One needs to take one's dignity for oneself and own it, make it clear that you are who you are, and that's plenty fuckin' good enough. When you participate in discrimination against your own kind, it is an implicit admission that the status quo is right and acceptable.

As an aside, I think we should start tagging women's issues with #hubska (Saydrah, cynthianews, anyone?). Good polish humor.

b_b I would prefer it tagged #womensrights as far as Ashley Jude goes, I could care less about her. :D

It seems to me that there is very clearly a problem with the obsession over body image, and even this celebrity fascination or deification in general, which let's face it, even this article is guilty of, but it seems dishonest to me to label this typical tabloid garbage as 'patriarchy', or even a symptom of it.

It's an altogether different beast, rooted in different psychology, to a different end, perpetuated by a different class of people and thought. That it's focus is primarily on women doesn't mean that it has a relationship with patriarchy.

But, indeed, I think we should ask why wouldn't the tabloid articles be propagating male privilege? While it does have also something to do with celebrity admiration and over-exposure, that doesn't mean the patriarchical mode of thinking isn't present. One does not exclude the other.

One doesn't exclude the other, no, but one also doesn't imply the other. As I said, just because it's focus is on women more so than it is men, it doesn't follow that it must be associated with patriarchy. It's focus is on women likely because that's just what the consumers of celebrity tabloids will eat up and buy, and the main consumers of tabloid media are women. I can only speculate as to why those type of women would get satisfaction from the humiliation and degradation of celebrities, but I'm skeptical of the knee-jerk reaction to merely dismiss it off as patriarchy rather than give it the scrutiny and consideration it deserves.
