The old media models are dying, and fast.
If I were a news reporter now I would immediately start cutting ties and aggressively begin developing my personal brand.
No matter if your're talking about new media or old media, content is king, and the reporters at papers like the time don't fully appreciate (imho) the significance of the value-add they bring. I'd be developing my own site and revenue mechanism.
