A collection of absurd homes for your viewing pleasure

Inspired by this: http://hubski.com/pub?id=15018

1st up, Nick Cage's Bel Air mansion, 363 Copa De Oro, originally built by Charlie Chaplin, originally offered at $35 million, finally sold for $11 million:

Next, Candy Spelling's house, originally up for $150 million, eventually sold for $85 million to Petra Ecclestone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmWpACNoHtw

Most expensive spec home ever built, Portabello, in Orange County: http://portabello.com/ http://twistedsifter.com/2011/06/portabello-estate-orange-co...

Supposedly ask $75m, supposedly sold $35.1m, but that's up to question: http://priceypads.com/21595/portabello-estate-sold/

Antilia, Mukesh Abmani's "billion dollar" 27-story pleasure palace for six:

And, for shits'n'giggles, the "Darth Vader House", a landmark up Solstice Canyon (which I think is under foreclosure): http://la.curbed.com/archives/2007/09/malibu_mystery.php

When I moved to Vancouver, the room that I ended up renting (from craigslist) is in the oldest money neighborhood west of Toronto. To give you an example, I checked out a book from the library called 'The Essential Guide to Vancouver Architecture' and the house I was living in was in that book! Anyway, just down the street, TWO cranes were, and still are, erecting the biggest house in Canada. 48,000 sq feet on paper - 60,000 sq feet all day with services. Apparently the guy is a trader who is really protective of his daughter, so instead of letting her run around town all night - she can go out dancing at home in her very own night club (which lowers and becomes a swimming pool) that way, when she gets roofied, she can at least get raped in her own bed. It's been interesting watching the building go up, to say the least.

Your waterfall muse is nice. Worth working for. Reminds me of Lawrence Halprin: http://whereintheworldispatty.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02... - He's big out here :)

This is not as "absurd" as much as "different". This was my grandparents house in Northern California. After they passed, none of their kids could really make it work as their own, so my dad and his brothers sold it to what they thought was a noble cause.

Maybe this doesn't fit in this thread... but oh well.

If anyone is interested in buying my childhood, it's for sale: http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/7826-Teahen-Rd-Brighton-MI...

My grandparents are selling the house where I spent countless hours growing up. My wife and I were married there. It's an amazing place and I'd like to see it in the hands of a good human.

Absurd... no, miraculous imo -yes.

Nick Cage, John Malkovitch, Stephen Spielberg and a whole bunch of people who likely should have known better took a big hit under Madoff.

Used to be the largest private estate ever built in the US. (It could still be, I have no idea). My in laws live in Asheville so it's often referenced. Pretty amazing.

Ha ha! The Winchester House has been on my mind lately for one reason or another. I've never been inside though. Have you?
