How depressing. Why can't people listen to and play music just because they like it and not give a fuck about the rest?
I've known of and have casually listened to Merrill Garbus for a couple of years now. Most of her music has a vertigo inducing asperity to it (maybe that's where the name comes into play), but I like it because it's different. And when she's on, she's really on. Powerful voice, interesting timing, layered sounds. But to say that her career is just starting now because he heard that she won an award that she could probably give a shit about is presumptuous to me. Mostly though, I resent that CK opens by saying that this discussion won't consider or include many people: "I'm guessing this doesn't mean much to more than (maybe) 10,000 people in the entire country." but then ends with "For the next 15 years, she must validate other people's belief in her own brilliance. There is no other option. Because if she doesn't, those same people will view her inability to become transcendent as hilarious." I mean, what the fuck? Maybe some people aren't in the music game solely to get famous and forever be adored by their fans.
