What SOPA and PIPA are at face value and what they could end up enabling.

Great video, I plan on sharing this with people, thank you. Do you happen to know if there is pending legislation that is similar to SOPA/PIPA or is the threat abated for now?

If these legislations pass, hubski.com would clearly have to shut down (by @mk, unless he has deep pockets and lawyers on retainer). Not even filtering of posting of URLs would prevent users to cut and paste "copyrighted" content. Game over.

IMO, this is partly designed to enable the entirely predictable and obvious 'next step', that is the "legal" granting of exemptions to "recognized news agencies" e.g. The New York Times Company. (Remember saint Steve Jobs' comments on "nation of bloggers".)

It's true that Hubski would not survive for long, and unfortunately, my pockets do not run that deep.

I do imagine that this effort will reemerge in a form that alpha0 suggests. They will try to pacify the largest opponents to SOPA, creating exemptions for their class of service, and make another go at it. It's likely Hubski won't have an exemption.

In this talk by Sal Khan he uses CNN as an example of a site that would be under scrutiny from the legislation, but we still hear no objections from the major news outlets. Why? Because this would ensure a continuance of business as usual. A while back mk posted this http://hubski.com/pub?id=5740 about Anderson Coopers report on reddit. In the comments I asked whether CNN may have done this piece because they feel threatened by crowd sourced media? Something I think they should feel threatened by. (accountability is a bitch).

This legislation wouldn't touch their websites but the aggregators out there would be fiznucked.

We cannot let it come to that. We can't!

Actually, The New York Times Co. via their mouthpiece Boston Globe did come out in favor of SOPA. Duck it ;)

Run for office, young man.

Only if my slogan can be, "99% of us have 100% in common" ;)

Sounds good to me ;)

We also need a new, independent, party. Need a name for that, too.

I'll think on it.

Tell your friends, as well. To have just a single family (Paul) as the "last hope" for America is neither reasonable nor comforting. And why does this "hope" exist? Because he ran for public office to serve his nation. Because what matters is who is running what committee, who gets to set the agenda, and who writes the bills that become law. Where the rubber of democracy meets the road of governance.

Think long term. SOPA is nothing. Right around the corner is the man-machine interface tech, nano-tech, surveillance-focused-AI, etc. And I sure as hell am not pinning my hopes on Sergey-Brins-of-this-world's good judgement on these matters, and neither should you. They participated in SOPA protests because it directly threatened their business model. They were mum on NDAA, for example.

Thanks for posting this, I found this to be one of the most straight forward examples of the bills and why they are an infringement on our rights.
