I kind of sick of the term "fundamentalist atheist". There are staunch atheists. And for sure there are some crazy and some well reasoned atheists, just like any other group of people. But the word fundamentalist implies that there is a spelled out dogma or code of rules to which one is adhering, even in the face of evidence to the contrary. Fundamentalist religious people take their text to be literal. Atheism is the absence of religion and has no text to which fundamentalists could adhere. The two concepts are qualitatively different.

Britain's laws are crazy. -FTFY
It never ceases to amaze me the heavy-handedness of some of their laws. They are as crazy as we are in the States, but it a different way. GB would be the first place to require a DNA test to rent an apartment. It's a shame about Dawkins. IMO he has some interesting things to say, but he takes himself far too seriously. He seems the kind of guy that would spend endless energy to avoid saying that he was wrong about something.

It doesn't seem that Dawkins had anything to say on the issue. Members of his website, who were responsible for all the fuss, could be anybody.
I think in Britain the person accused of libel has to prove that they did not act libelous, hence there are shitloads of libel suits. Not cool.
