I think you're exactly right about the follower-count problem. Number of followers is the new karma. I guess that isn't necessarily a problem if it incentivizes quality, high-effort content contribution.

I admit that I am much more likely to follow someone based on the list of recent posts and follower count that appear in their profile than based on their comments, so I agree that contribution to quality discussion needs to be prioritized more.

For a long time, karma incentivized quality, high-effort content. Incentivizations are typically a bad idea for long-term quality.
