It's wholly satisfying to review how the GOP clown car sar was like the proverbial frog in a pot. They were the one's slowly kicking up the heat, cooking theirPartieslegitimacy away slowly. Only recognizing it waay too late (Insert Nelson Muntz "ha-haw" here).
I say that? Frickin' Bret Stephens graduated the year before I did. Bret is A YEAR OLDER THAN ME which means his Republican Party is my Republican Party: A bunch of televangelist assholes who insist Dungeons and Dragons are going to make us sell our souls to the devil, who condemn Iran but sell them front-line weaponry on the side and who prop up the apartheid regime in South Africa because Uncle Sam needs titanium to put down the Red Menace. During Bret's formative years, the Republican Party shut down the government, had a child molester lead congress, let September 11 happen and invaded Iraq on a ruse. During Bret's adult years, the Republican Party have become moon-howlilng conspiracy theorists hell bent on outrage, with no cohesive policies, no sense of dignity, and no barriers to entry so long as you're crazy and white. I don't think Statler and Waldorf realize how fucked they are - if you're growing up with this shit? The conservatives are Nazis. 
The natural place for the G.O.P. is as the party of economic freedom, social aspiration and moral responsibility — a party of risers, if not always of winners. Its archetypal constituent is the small-business owner. It wants less regulation because it understands from experience how well-intended ideas from above translate into onerous and stupid rules at the ground level. It doesn’t mind big business per se but objects to moralizing C.E.O.s who try to use their size and incumbency to impose left-coast ideology.
