Unlike Iraq or Afghanistan, the US made a commitment to Ukraine, namely to eventually admit it into NATO (thanks to the ABSOLUTELY GENIUS George W. Bush and his admin). Flawed though Ukraine's democratic system may be, the US wanted to promote and defend it in the face of Russian autocracy.
