Of course the pub is open only for take out/delivery. I understand the pubskikeeper has some powerful brew (plague of locusts) (see Exodus 10:1-20). Socially isolated except for the other two people in my household - a Turkish post doc researcher specializing in water justice and a retired rabbi specializing in social and political activism (but frequently discouraged). I also have regular visitors to my side yard: mostly possums, skunks, and racoons at night. We work late by a large window. The motion lights go on and we close the indoor lights and see who's visiting. They tend to come one at a time, clearly also socially isolating. I am in an urban area but there are expansive forests not too far away and wetlands not too far away. If we were a little closer to the escarpment, we'd probably also have coyotes and deer. I wait for spring. The temperatures for the next week are predicted to be in the double digits (C) or 50s (F). Oh spring, hurry. We need you.
Settling in for the long haul. Snout has MERV13 filter cloth in it. Eyes are out of safety goggles. They fog up a bit. Will probably roll without the eyes. It's a functional mask, better than the other stuff we've made simply because of the surface area. Got some wiring done yesterday. Started with 100 feet of romex, finished with about 12 inches. Cut it close. Need some stuff for the box so that it isn't hazardous; will be able to get that tomorrow since school is out. Energy coming back slowly. Need to get the circuits up, need to get the Benelli working, need to wash the car. Maybe I'll feel not shitty enough to do the retaining wall in the back. We'll see. It's tough because I need to intervene with the kid every hour or so to unfuck her computer because her school has decided that 33 K-1-2s really need to wrap their heads around Google Meet and it's hot garbage. I don't know if we'll be able to keep all our employees in their homes. I advised them not to buy in November and it's not my fault that they're living beyond their means but if my employees are falling apart, so's my business. We've counted four instances in the past week where we could have used point-of-care ultrasound but we can't bill insurance for it. We can get one for $2000. We'll probably do it just because it'll help control infection.
Hey Hubski, Wow. What a month March was. I fear that April will be no less daunting. Some personal updates; My family is safe. Our cupboards are stocked and we appear to be healthy. We are challenged with ways to keep the children occupied and entertained. I haven't been busier re work. We are attempting to acquire another company and raise our series A. Which it feels like we have been talking about raising for 2 years. This is maybe the worst economic environment in history to raise money in. Wish us luck. I bought a new guitar but I've been too busy to play it. It's just sitting down there, waiting for me. I haven't felt particularly inspired. You'd think I would have cause to record and write given the crazy environment we are in but nope. Nothing. The quill is dry. Positive stuff: Been playing with my kids a lot. A ton of hide and go seek, cops and robbers, soccer, archery and classic Nintendo. I've also been cooking a LOT. Maybe it's time to reboot #grubski? Anyone interested? I bought so much perishable veggies and fruits that I've taken to juicing them when they start to turn. It's amazing how much I enjoy the juice. It's like a drug. Speaking of drugs... mk made some beer with weed in it. He shared two types with me. One was called the grasshopper which gives a nice buzz. The other was the "locust" which he hadn't yet tried but warned me was very strong and should be sipped. Well... I mixed them up. I slammed a locust in like 15 minutes. Within an hour I felt like I was tripping without the visuals. The next morning I woke up and still felt the same way. STRONG STUFF mk. I've since tried his grasshopper and it's delightful. The locust is a beast though. Speaking of beasts... My wife wants us to get another dog. Why? Because we don't have enough going on apparently ;-) Stay safe Hubski!
Hey Hubski, I hope everyone is weathering the storm. I have a survey I would like you all to take, if possible. Please copy paste and reply below. 1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? 2. Does someone you know have/had it? 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? I’m just curious how this has impacted people. I know how it has locally, but Hubski is a well distributed network of awesome human beings. I am curious how y’all are impacted. Stay positive, but don’t test positive. Social distancing!! Much love, -tng
1) I'm getting over coronavirus. It sucks. Energy is low. Still coughing 5 weeks later. Pretty sure this will be with me for months; when I had pertussis it took six months to grow back my alveoli. It never got "oh shit" except for the three days where my lungs burned when I breathed in. Only ever time I dealt with that was when i gave myself pneumonia by sleeping in a painting booth overnight (0 stars would not recommend). 2) My mother-in-law is getting over coronavirus. Neither of us could get tested, of course. We spent probably a combined 10 hours trying. For her it manifested as laryngitis with a wicked flu. For that matter one of our midwives has been low energy with laryngitis since late December. Connecting the dots I got it from my wife (who had mild symptoms for 3 days) who got it from my daughter (who had the pukes for 2 days) who got it from her class (which had an eruption of a dozen or so mild pukes cases in February). All this marvelous language about ease of testing is purest bullshit; speaking as a healthcare insider who sees the internal memos, WA is really only testing people in dire health or those who have been around people who have gone to the hospital. I know of ONE PERSON who tested positive for coronavirus and testing was unavailable to one of our employees, who is his daughter-in-law, who was at a party with him all night the week before. She's asymptomatic. 3) Not that I know of. All the Olds I'm in contact with are okay so far. We ran a pulse-ox on my mother-in-law because she was complaining that her symptoms felt "exactly like altitude sickness" (which is a shitty place to be at sea level) but she rolled a 97% so we knew she was going to be okay. 4) I didn't think there was a chance in hell that anyone would ever want to watch a bunch of strangers cooped up in a house together ever.fucking.again but what the fuck do I know. Meanwhile we're an essential business and a healthcare facility so we're literally bracing for dunkirk. our nearest hospital L&D department has closed and the local EMS department is kidding-on-the-square that if things get dicey they're transporting to us not the other way 'round. Meanwhile three of our employees are former-student hustlers trying to roll three jobs into one income and their boyfriends/husbands are hospitality/construction/whatever so they're all freaking balls about money. One of them has already left her husband for beating her but she had to move back in because this is our life now. Another is probably getting beaten but she hasn't said anything about it yet so all we can do is be extra-supportive and ready to help her make a move.
1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus? - Not this one (COVID-19) 2. Does someone you know have/had it? - Not yet 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? - Not yet 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? - Not yet - but it's coming.
I debated writing COVID-19 but thought “nah, nobody will call me on this.” I was wrong. It was you. (I've now edited OP) I feel ya re the “not yets.” I hope that my parents and my in-laws can weather this storm. Hell, I’m 42 years old, I hope I can. My wife has already lost her job. She’s our major breadwinner. I gave myself a 30% pay cut too. I was very lucky to have sold my home just prior to all of this or I would be screwed. Stay safe! Don’t get the corona... I mean, specifically COVID-19
1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it?
2. Does someone you know have/had it? no
3. Do you know someone that has died from it? yes, we were in line for an international woman's day (March 8) event featuring activist and revolutionary, Angela Y. Davis when we were approached by a guy who hugged and shook hands with my guy saying, "You married us in Vancouver 15 years ago." 14-15 days later we find out he tested positive . . he said there were four bad days with flu symptoms but he was getting better. He was at an event with 500 peole. Toronto shut down around March 23.
no, but my cousin in Salem Mass has had a good friend die from it and two of her friends are sick.
cheques keep coming . . . so far.
1. Nope, although I might be asymptomatic (veeery light cough/sniff at times) 2. Yep, know like 3 people, 2 nearby and 1 daughter of a colleague with a confirmed case. 3. Thank goodness no 4. No consequences for me, other than that my girlfriend (who just graduated) doesn't have the best job prospects :(
1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? Possibly, but I don't know. Can't get tested. (I'm in America, so...) Went to San Diego about a month before Wuhan went crazy, and everyone on the trip came back sick with a mysterious dry cough/flu thing that none of us could shake for about 4 weeks. Then COVID happened, and we all looked sidelong at each other... and there's been some persistent flu going around my office (which does a LOT of business in China) for a month or so. It's been around my team of 5 people about 3 times... and that was just around the time I went to San Diego, too. So yeah; probably. Fine now, tho. 2. Does someone you know have/had it? Kinda. My sister works with seniors with Alzheimers, and has been in/at all of the senior homes in Seattle that you have seen in the news. She does NOT have it... but many of her clients do. 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? My sister does, of course. I do not. 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? Still have my job. Flights back from the UK were hosed, so it cost me some extra money to get a flight (and seats) that were acceptable to me and my family. Car rental had to be extended, so that cost some money. An extra hotel room at the end of our stay, as we waited for our flight. Paying someone to do grocery shopping for us, while we are quarantined at home. I think that might be it...
1. No 2. Outbreak at the nursing home my sister works at so we’ll see 3. Thankfully no 4. Laid off like 2 weeks ago now but honestly since my job is 95% interacting with traveller it was a bit of a relief. Financially I’ll be fine, I’ve been thinking about getting back into gardening for something to keep me busy.
1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? - I still in a tin foil hat way think I had it in January and even if I have or had it, wouldn’t be able to tell you for sure because of the testing situation. 2. Does someone you know have/had it? - yes, friends sister and another friend-of-a-friend, separately 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? - yes, friends sister died. I didn’t really know the sister that well. 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? - i am essential bitchessssss so, no
My answers: 1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus? -No. I don’t think so 2. Does someone you know have/had it? - No. one of my colleagues aunt has it and was just released from the ER. 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? - no 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? - Yes. We have implemented pay cuts for our executive team and some others to extend runway. My wife is out of work.
Yeah, she is going to be fine. We are going to open up a private practice for her. She already has the loan and a business partner. This just puts us with 3 months of no income from her. It's not ideal but we are very fortunate people. We just need to stay healthy. That's all that matters right now for our family. I have us on pretty stringent lockdown over here. How are you? Do you have time to collaborate on something? We should put together an old-school podcast. I have writers block musically. I'd be willing to do it if you would put it to video once I complete. Thoughts?
I don't know if I had Sars-cov-2 because I wasn't tested but I did not get COVID-19 Yes, a professor I know from the medical clinic. Was knocked out for the past 3 weeks. He made it but still has breathing issues. A relative of an Italian colleague from Milan. No. Officially I work for the government. I should be fine.1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus (COVID-19)?
2. Does someone you know have/had it?
3. Do you know someone that has died from it?
4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it?
1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus? -No. 2. Does someone you know have/had it? - No. 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? - No. 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? - Yes. My seasonal tour guide work is not happening for sure. The government is promising 2000$ a month starting mid april for 4 months - I hope I don't get rejected on a technicality because if I do, I'm fucked.
I click on this post but it's all just comments by tng. april fool's, sucka! 1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? no 2. Does someone you know have/had it? no 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? no 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? YES. i still have a job, but i live with and split rent etc with my sister, who is now unemployed. My brother is also now mostly-unemployed or almost unemployed. He lost his day job. He has a semi-successful Etsy shop where he sells vintage clothing that supplements his income. shameless plug
1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? No 2. Does someone you know have/had it? No 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? No 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? I'm going to lose my job (management consultant), but for another reason (we are two in the firm and my boss is going to stop working so I have to find something else). The prospects of finding a new job are not great right now, especially as a consultant as the majority of clients stopped their projects. I think I should be able to find something in september. Might be impossible before that as almost nobody works in July/August in France with the holidays and everything. We shall see!
1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? Nope! 2. Does someone you know have/had it? Not yet. Until now it’s been only 3 degrees of separation (brother’s neighbor’s yadda yadda), though there have been a handful of cases in my town. 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? Nope. 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? I was job searching before all this, and the interviews I’ve had have stalled out since. Close friend of mine was supposed to snag an unpaid internship in a couple weeks and even they are getting told that may have to wait.
1. Do you have or have you had the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? - no 2. Does someone you know have/had it? - nobody that i know personally, but people that my parents know have it 3. Do you know someone that has died from it? - no 4. Have you lost your job or been financially impacted by it? - no, but my mother and sister are both out of work
Plants! In the checkout line at the store they had squash seeds, so I thought why not? They haven't sprouted yet, but there's succulents. More bread Came out well for a partially whole wheat loaf. This time I did traditional kneading and let it rise overnight, since the yeast turned out to be duds. Made a couple loaves from that.
My company is going to post an increase in year-over-year revenues during Corona. Largely due to deals that my team has worked on, or brought in house. For a $150m company, that's no small thing, and it keeps me in a job. Working from home suddenly clicked yesterday, when I moved my desk from the dark and cold basement, up to the main floor of the house, next to the big windows in the living room. Once I got set up, everything finally "clicked" into place, I found my flow, and did a marathon 3-hour straight session of productivity. After I came up for air, my wife said, "Wow... you were really deep in it there! Super-focus!" She said it felt like I was like a giant battery or reactor, generating energy. Pretty cool... I definitely am having mental effects from the State Of The Union. I've definitely been pushing it down and ignoring it, but I can feel that septic tank is almost full and is going to need emptying soon. Need to figure out how to do that in a way that doesn't get effluent on the people around me, and makes use of the resources and people I have at hand...
It annoys me so much to talk about feelings, and that means that right now, most of my feelings are generally negative. My daily mood has been pretty good this week. I'm on a 7-day run streak. I feel like I have largely acclimated to the isolation, at least for right now. My sister essentially refuses to social distance. This is infuriating. I am trying to use this time to really focus on myself, on eating clean and exercising and focusing. There is a lot of time available to everybody now and mostly I can use it productively. I have to gerry-rig the system to make myself do so successfully, but I know enough about the pulls and levers of the system that I can mostly make it so and I continue to try harder at it. Work is work. I have begun a search of local apartment complexes. I still expect to move out of here and living with my sister by late summer. I just don't think I'll be leaving the state. One positive thing about this is how wonderfully clean my apartment is getting, which is really a sign of exactly how much time I'm here and covertly my level of tension. But at least it helps.
dude she went to basically a fucking party last night her and her friends are sticking to the line of "as long as you go to gatherings of 10 or fewer people it's completely ok"(disregarding 6" of distance of course because if you're in a car with someone else you're not 6" apart and if you're sitting on a couch at someone else's random house you're not 6" apart and if you're making out with your boyfriend at the house he lives in with his mom YOU'RE NOT SIX FEET APART) and "your social circle can be as large as you want so long as you stick to the 10 or under rule for single gatherings" and she's going to freaking DRUG DEALERS houses of all places (yes i know, very famous for their cleanliness too right?) and "hanging out" and getting drunk and oh OF COURSE leaving the house to stay with her boyfriend every other night is a LIFE ESSENTIAL SERVICE
I told her off about it, so she declared she was going to go back to social distancing. She made it until the evening, when she decided she wanted chick fila but didn’t want to go alone. I tell ya what, I never knew it could take 6 hours to get a chicken sandwich I don’t want to be a parent, I’ve made my feelings clear and continue to do so, but also she is an adult. She ignored a job offer because she is making so much on unemployment. This really is who my sister is right now and I’m seeing it. Man, I have really grown the hell up in the past 3 years. Now I’m the responsible one Anyway, thanks for the space to vent. I needed to let it out somewhere and this isn’t exactly the kind of discussion I have with coworkers.
Definitely feeling a lot better than last week :) It feels like I've passed some kind of threshold where the isolation life is just the new normal, and I've adapted. I now have lots of books to read, projects to do (I want to re-paint a wall in the basement, make a big papier maché lamp/orb, get a garden started, start composting in the yard, and who knows what else). My parents are in a 14 day quarantine because they've just came back from Cuba - I'm bringing them food from time to time. I'm enjoying cooking, drawing, keeping the house clean. Yesterday, we went for a night time bike ride to ruffle through the neighbours trash (scored a couple milk crates, an old skateboard for my artist friends to paint on, and a new shelf for my plants). It was fun! Felt like an apocalypse gutter kid. I also re-upholstered a chair a friend gave to me with an old t-shirt and skirt. Never done it before and it turned out great in my opinion. Will post on the next craft thread. Glued up some wobbly stool we had, planted dill in an old sour cream pot, and got the bike ready for the season. Productive day! Even not seeing friends is getting easier - they are more active on social media in general and the movie watching every few days is helpful. If money doesn't become an issue, I can see myself living like this for a little while no problem.
Lurking in chatski throughout the past week or so. I like the feature a bunch. Nice dark screen to idle in the monitor rather than a static feed/comment section. The description at the top was nerfed hard with the past couple updates. Used to have an entendre as:Hubski Chat is beta, and does not respect markup.
Hubski Chat is very alpha, and does not respect markup.
different manager in my factory: "hey would you be able to help out this weekend with our employee health screenings when they arrive at the factory" me: "hey will you be providing adequate ppe for me to perform this task safely? if not, no" everybody: "..."
