It's so easy to vote to "keep our community safe." Because people get pissed off when crazy people bother them. And they want immediate solutions. Lock 'em up and throw away the key.

But time? Time is the most crucial thing in life. Frankly arresting and throwing anyone in jail for anything nonviolent (by violence I also mean theft and destruction of property) is a travesty in my view. It's some Babylonian cut off people's hands shit. Cruel and unusual.

It's so easy to be cynical about politics but I seriously doubt Joe Biden is going to put an end to these kind of things. Just because draconian punishments exist in third world countries does not mean America itself has a humane criminal justice system. When you're talking about depriving people of their fundamental human rights only the most extreme standards should be used to judge the outcome. Nobody should be in jail for getting high, nobody should be in jail for not renewing some piece of paperwork. It's a well-documented fact that a huge moneymaker for the criminal justice system is "careless people" i.e. those who forget to renew their documents.

The incarcerated are members of our community too. They're certainly not safer in jail and prison than they would be outside. Communities as a whole are also weaker because of mass incarceration.

The criminal punishment system is the same as it always was: a racist, classist, ablist mechanism of social control. This is what Biden represents.
